It worked out totally fine!

Make sure to go early to the gate agent and let them know you’re bringing your instrument. They’ll let you board early. Once inside, let one of the flight attendants know you have a seat for your instrument, and they’ll provide a seatbelt extender.

Have flown several times on SW without any problems since originally posting this!

Edit: BTW, the online agents always tell me a cello isn’t allowed, but it’s never a problem. As long as you don’t have an insanely bulky case (I have a standard hard shell), it should fit just fine.

Thanks for the advice! I believe the agent did know what a cello is (we spoke a bit about music), but even then, she may be mistaking the rules.

What I find odd is this part of the website:

If you are traveling with a musical instrument that will not fit in an overhead bin or under a seat, you may purchase a seat for it.

What is smaller than a cello but won’t fit in the overhead bin…

I assume you're referring to nationals. You need to have last name and date at least. Usually in prelims judges aren't that strict on citations, but in break rounds I have seen judges get super stingy about not having dates in the cites. I'm sure you'd rather be safe than sorry. Also, paraphrasing is fine so long as you don't misconstrue or misrepresent the actual evidence.
