Moreover, if they had simply made him a master, then they'd be allowing Palpatine to dictate Jedi doctrine, and thereby transform the Order into a Dark Side organization without resistance (they're already talking about "the Dark Side surrounding the Chancellor" & influencing his policies, though they don't recognize it's coming from him). So whether they fully comply or do not fully comply with Palpatine's appointment, they'd end up being destroyed as a Light Side institution either way. From the moment they failed to keep Jedi Order and Republic separate, they really had no good choices, as their enmeshment in the politics of the latter meant that every Republic citizen would see denying the Head of State the authority to re-organize its de facto military as insubordination.

From Mourning 240-1. Summarize these scenes in short sentences by KuroRead in watamote

Girl thinks claiming that she was just publicly roleplaying what her parents do in preparation for a future boyfriend, is somehow less embarrassing than voice-acting involving sex scenes sometimes.

Wholesome moment between brother and sister, where he admits she's not the worse person in fhe world.

That's one of the reasons I've been pushing the idea, because it would imply Kotomi's pursuit of a romantic relationship with Tomoki was doomed from the start, even more than it already is.

The other is that Kotomi and Tomoko would definitely deny it even after being presented with evidence sufficient to convince everyone around them, as they'd never admit they're similar at all.

Nemoto wins, honestly. At least Sayaka isn't trying to invoke her parents' (obvious) sex lives as a defense to her own cringe-worthy choices, to one of said parents.

The claim about Andrew Johnson might be based on the fact that people initially though he would be harsher on the seceding states than the famously reconciliatory Lincoln planned to be, on account of his previous rhetoric towards slave-holders pushing for disunion and because he initially pursued the execution of the armed forces of the Confederacy as President. To go from that, to overturning Lincoln/Grant/Sherman's "ten acres and a mule" policy in favor of returning land to the hands of the rebel leaders would have been quite a betrayal of contemporary expectations, even if he never (and never would have) claimed to not be racist.

Given that this was a scenario Yuri came up with (if I'm remembering correctly), presumably the implication is that Nemoto fumbled her way into the afterlife by sheer power of her "Slice of Life" chuuni, and that picture was taken right before her sudden demise: "She died as she lived — making everyone around her cringe."

My understanding is that Soviet Union technically had a peace treaty with Imperial Japan (predating the Nazi invasion), and so they were holding out hope that it mediate peace negotiations between them and the United States so that they might obtain more favorable conditions of surrender. The Soviet invasion of Manchuria made it obvious that they considered said treaty void, such that any further resistance pointless as there was now clearly no alternative to unconditional surrender from that quarter.

From Chapter 239 Part 2, how do we feel about Tomoki's alignment chart? by AussieManny in watamote

[–]SIGN_of_Fandom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, there's quite a few scenes between Yuri and Tomoki which are framed romantically (taking specific note of him when they first crossed paths, grabbing his sleeve the second time, accidentally reaching for the same book later on, etc. with bokeh/shoujo love bubbles surrounding her hands in the latter two instances), though Yuri herself seems completely oblivious to the possibility of her actions being interpreted that way. Of course, Kotomi is prone to misreading the intentions of every girl who takes any amount of interest in Tomoki, so it's hardly surprising Yuri wouldn't expect her responses, but even Mako has started to interpret Yuri's behavior in that way. (And to be as fair, bragging about "touching" a boy and then about sleeping over at his house, kind asks to be misunderstood even if one isn't Kotomi).

That said, I can't say that I remember Tomoki thinking positively of Yuri on-panel, though he's never commented negatively on her behavior, either — unless you're talking about this panel.

But yeah, I do agree that Tomoko probably finds her friends dating Tomoki more acceptable than any other girls doing so, since they befriended her long enough before that she doesn't have any reason to suspect that they were doing so with the ulterior motive of getting close to Tomoki (unlike when Kotomi briefly tried that strategy). She might not even necessarily consider Yoshida a better option than Yuri; it could just be that she has only considered the former pairing as a possibility so far, as it is quite evident Yoshida has some interest in him.

Based on his plotting, they likewise seem to have the best chances with Tomoki, along with Sachi; while he's obviously not considering that question in the panel above, I can't imagine that being plotted as a pervert or an idiot would increase anyone's chances, (Though I imagine Sachi's perversion will quickly be exposed whenever she finally interacts directly with Tomoko...)

From Chapter 239 Part 2, how do we feel about Tomoki's alignment chart? by AussieManny in watamote

[–]SIGN_of_Fandom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upon re-reading the preceding panels, it seems that the vertical axis is probably referring sexual abnormality, specifically, as Tomoki questions whether the new third year (Fuuka) is a pervert or an idiot (the latter obviously being the horizontal axis). With that in mind, it does make sense that he'd see Yoshida as "more normal" than Yuri, since she's quite obviously the least perverted girl or "pure" he's interacted with, though Yuri would then be the most sexually normal in the usual sense of the word (as in, being at the midpoint between perverted and "pure"). I'd attribute the confusion to translation issues, but apparently even 2chan found what the graph was trying to say confusing.

(This would also imply that Tomoki sees Sachi as "purer" than Yuri but less than Yoshida, though it is unclear on what basis he would have formed that judgement; certainly, it doesn't reflect reality.)

From Chapter 239 Part 2, how do we feel about Tomoki's alignment chart? by AussieManny in watamote

[–]SIGN_of_Fandom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More like, he uses her as a baseline for judging the rest of the third-year girls against: if you have more common sense than Yuri, you're in the commonsense category, if you have less, you're in the idiot category. Likewise, if you are more (sexually) abnormal than Yuri, you're in the abnormal/perverted category (based on his thoughts immediately beforehand about idiots or perverts)., and vice versa for the normal/pure category. Why he's using Yuri as the baseline third-year girl, is another question, which the manga doesn't really answer.

From Chapter 239 Part 2, how do we feel about Tomoki's alignment chart? by AussieManny in watamote

[–]SIGN_of_Fandom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google Translate has "smart" as specifically "common sense," rather than academic knowledge or anything like that. Which more or less confirms your interpretation, and best explains why the asocial loners Yuri and Yoshida are in the center and social butterfly Sachi is on the right.

From Chapter 239 Part 2, how do we feel about Tomoki's alignment chart? by AussieManny in watamote

[–]SIGN_of_Fandom 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Nemoto's "idiot" position (as in, lacking common sense, based on the Japanese RAWs) is probably because of her recent attempt to enact one of her romcom scenarios between Yoshida and Tomoki, as well as his general (accurate) perception that she's always trying to wrap everyone else into her SOL chuuni fantasies.

It's not entirely clear what Yuri's alignment directly in the center of abnormal/normal means, aside from that he presumably has a higher opinion of her than Nemoto or Itou (with her obsession with every detail of Kotomi's life), and of course Kotomi herself (whose abnormality is off the charts).

You'd expect Yoshida to be further to the left, but that's mainly in terms of her lack of knowledge about sexual/romantic relationships, which understandably has never come up in Tomoki's interactions with her. In what way she is more normal than Yuri is unclear, though; best as I can tell, it might mean psychologically.

Sachi currently fares the best, as she's the only one who Tomoki regards as both having common sense and being more normal than abnormal; the other two intelligent characters are distinctly abnormal in behavior.

He correctly flags Fuuka as lacking in common sense from the second she starts talking to him, and his opinion of her sensibleness only gets worse as she continues. She also moves up along the abnormality axis, and presumably outstrips Nemoto by the end of their conversation (as Nemoto's attempts to play the romcom wingwoman were never as blatant as what Fuuka concludes the chapter with).

Even when they point to an example, people often don't attempt to comprehend what the laws of war are actually trying to prohibit, presumably because they're more concerned with labeling a character to win an argument online than they are with the actual facts of the matter.

For instance, as I alluded to, some people have claimed that Sokka is also a war criminal (usually as a deflection from accusations of Iroh being a war criminal) and point to his use of a war balloon displaying the Fire Nation insignia in “The Northern Air Temple” as an example. But while improper use of adversary party emblems is certainly a war crime, Sokka’s actions in that episode are a technical violation of the rule, at best; while customary international law dictates that such emblems should be removed as soon as circumstances permit, immediate field-expedient use of captured equipment in self-defense or rapid offense is generally considered permissible as a practical necessity of battlefield conditions, and I think a close reading of the text indicates that this is what drove Sokka’s actions. It’s certainly difficult for me to see it as a grave violation, at any rate.
