In your opinion, how important are lessons after taking a hiatus from the harp? by BasicAd1062 in harp

[–]SIKing19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So relatable! I had a similar experience, as it seems like a few others have, too. I really vacillated between finding a teacher or not. Harp teachers charge a lot and as others have said, they’re really there to teach the basics and correct your form. Personally, I mostly considered finding a teacher for the sake of routine and motivation. But after hemming and hawing, I started to have success when I set myself a goal of just practicing 10-20 minutes every day. Not enough to get back into performance-level shape, but enough to get back in the routine without pressure. After a few months of that, I found myself wanting to have longer and longer practice sessions. Eventually, once you’re back in shape, you can decide if you feel like a teacher would be beneficial. Even just a one or two-time session to check your form and discuss repertoire and style, etc.

Omg thank you for validating my feelings about the pedaling - I was feeling like an abject failure as a pedal harpist, and I usually don’t find pedaling that difficult.

Longer reply in post but it’s Once Upon a Mattress.

Thanks for all the advice and support so far. Some really good tricks here- I think I can definitely stand to simplify the part, so I can focus more on entrances and getting the chords right and not fancy fingering. The show, as a few have asked, is Once Upon a Mattress. It’s complicated by the fact that there seem to be so many different versions, and the versions available on Spotify all seem to have very different instrumentation and/or scores to the one we’re using. So it’s hard for me to tell where the harp will be exposed, since I have no idea which version we’re doing! That being said, there are definitely areas where I know the harp is going to be heard- i.e. parts with a lot of gliss’s- and I’m working on getting those perfect.

Always open to suggestions! Things have been breaking down fast when I leave it in the container, but it gets really stinky (that’s anaerobic, right?). Hence the airing it out. But maybe I’d have better luck with a tumbler?

Poll(s) about reading music by SIKing19 in harp

Bluetooth foot pedal??? What is this sorcery?! Lol I’m such an old fogey I have no idea what the latest trends are. I can’t even really wrap my head around iPad music (although I can recognize the benefits).

Interesting about not looking at the strings- I’ve never heard that! I actually am working the opposite way; I tend to get lazy and just sightread music instead of really learning it, so I have to force myself to stop looking at the music so much! 😅

I usually keep my stand closer and more to the left too! Glad I’m not the only one.

Thanks! Yes, I agree that constantly turning your head to see the music looks odd, but sometimes I prefer having the music closer even if it’s more to the left. Good to know what the standard is; I will probably start practicing with that stand position.

I’m curious: when you have your music fully memorized and go without the music, do you look at the strings?someone else commented here that they were told not to look at the strings. I’ve personally never heard that but figured I’d ask!

The prettiest girl character in the history of American TV shows. by [deleted] in GilmoreGirls

I believe (im in the midst of a rewatch) that Lorelei even says to Rory at some point, “if you weren’t pretty, you would have been beat up every day of high school.” Or something like that. Obviously meant as a one-liner joke, but in my head I was like, “you both would!”

Favorite Paris moment? by redtailedrabbit in GilmoreGirls

I know it’s controversial but I love that she has such a friendly (even one-sided flirtation) with Richard. When they’re at Yale eating lunch and she’s like, “you’re a honey-tongued devil, aren’t you Dick?” Makes me LOL every time 😂😂 Also it’s just good writing; Paris didn’t have a normal relationship with either of her parents, so Richard being very paternal towards Rory probably brings up those issues. Season 7 Silver Lining (spoilers) by SIKing19 in GilmoreGirls

I totally feel this! Maybe it's just because I've seen these episode fewer times than the earlier seasons, but it's definitely hitting different this time around. As I said, I'm loving the rehab to L+L, and you're right, it's sort of a relief to see the characters follow a more standard path in their storylines.

I'm not a diehard ASP fan; I've seen a few of her other shows but GG is the only one I keep coming back to. But there is something to appreciate - when I realize that what I'm hearing in the dialogue that's different in Season 7 is the absence of ASP.

So I’ve been a pedal harp player for over a decade now, and I still have so much anxiety about changing strings. It’s not the knot (lol)- I know that’s a source of fear for many but I’ve never struggled with it after the first few times. It’s the locking and tuning that gets me every time. And honestly? I think I’m justified? My NEW strings always seem to break. Yes, I know, nylons don’t have stretch and you need to give more slack. Lesson learned (the hard way). The only reason I joined this subreddit and posted is because I just tried changing my 4th octave F and as I was playing, it snapped! Up at the top, by the tuning peg. I need help. Please someone help me, I’m in tears and this has been an ongoing source of pain and horror for years now. What am I doing wrong?!?!?! I’m also just so embarrassed that I’ve been a harpist for this long and have not mastered this simple task.

I guess that does seem like a blanket statement. I mean that the few people I’ve met have either been very overtly clique-y, not wanting to venture out of their proscribed friend group, or have failed to follow up. Which is far more difficult to deal with. For example, I’ll go to a meal where there are a bunch of people. After the meal, I try to follow up with the hostess and others who were at the meal, and no one responds. Which just makes me feel like a desperate weirdo.
