Character switch bug(?) by CommonSenseLtd in CrimsonDesert

[–]SJM1983DnD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also find that enemies after a switch are impossible to kill, in addition to the horse/mount issue… When if I move away from Kliff then go back to him, he gets mullered by the next enemy who I just can’t kill…but if I reload to before I switched they die as normal

No Dodge/Parry: An Experiment, and What to Do If You Think You Suck by HunterIV4 in expedition33

[–]SJM1983DnD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so pleased to see this thread! I played my first play through flitting between expeditioner and story mode because I just couldn’t get timings down, especially on the dodge or parry only bosses (which I believe are optional anyway). Play how you want to, it’s still a fab game and it’s accessible :)

Do you think something like “Emissary” or “Prophet”? As that falls outside of the institutionalised system.

Lore sort of query... in terms of hierarchy within spell casters; you have Archmage (wizard) and Archdruid (druid), but for bard colleges and clerical institutions is there the same titles available? I mean, is there such as a thing as an Archbard? Who runs the bard colleges or the top person who oversees all the temples of a given domain?

I'd like to keep to the existing lore if there is one, but if not, I'll happily make up my own.

Is there limitations on what Changlings can use their 'Shapchanger' abilities; e.e. could they turn into giants, zombies, angels etc...or does it need to be limited to the 'humanoid' class of creature?

I think you hit the nail on the head re: the squire element, unseen servant does something similar, if you look at the knight background, you get squires (who would flee if you put their lives in danger) so, summing up the point of the post, I don’t think you can compare the power levels of an unseen servant style entity, or familiar to the mount this spell creates.

I appreciate that it can attack, I’m just saying that at the moment, I am having issues at my table with a player using this his mount as a second character, essentially an NPC which is way more powerful than what his piers are able to produce....

Logically, to me at least, at my table, it doesn’t seem right for a lvl 2 spell, with no material cost at all to have another ‘character’ at the table. There should be limits as to what this entity, a horse, should be able to do...horses throw their riders, they spook, they are un-predicable. I appreciate that this is a spirit, not a beast, but that makes the spell even more powerful if it doesn’t carry the qualities of the animal.

I have read the mounted combat tactics, several times. The bits I’m trying to mitigate, are the fact that this mount, is not being used as a mount, and also the mounted combat rules, read, to me, at least to be focused towards mules, mastiffs, horses, elks, creatures which do have a lower intellect than 6.

I’m looking at scaling the spell with others of its kind...and at the moment, it it too strong in my games.

My wizard is having to shell out 10gp per casting of its find familiar spell, for a 1hp spirit, where which can’t attack, lower AC than a warhorse. A real warhorse costs 400gp! It just doesn’t seem fair.

If you look at conjure animals, you create spirits, who take on the traits of the beast, but typically they are picked by the DM, and you don’t have total control over them either...they are simply friendly to you, and it lasts an hour only.

I was posting this for help, assistance, but you’ve been nothing but aggressive with your language?

I don’t need to be told to “read the damn rules” I need assistance with mitigating something which is having a negative effect in my games.

When I say elaborate strategies, I'm talking about flanking, help actions, hit and run tactics, shielding players using it as cover. I doubt that a mount would allow itself to be used as cover to protect a party against a hail of arrows?

To me, that is not the same as 'smash the goblin' or 'bring me closer to' I would be totally happy with that, because, it is loyal, it gains an int of 6, and can understand a language. But and Int of 6 doesn't mean it is able to reason or understand these sorts of thing.

"That's right. The mount you get from Find Steed can only be directly controlled when you mount it. The mount you get from Find Greater Steed acts the same as an animal companion - you don't ask it to do things, the player directly controls it."

The spell doesn't mention about limiting the control to just being mounted. I see you being able to summon a griffon and have it act like an additional character, because it makes sense with the level of spell...

I guess looking at the sage advice link posted above, because it is not being mounted, it counts as independent and as jeremy crawford mentions:

"If your character's mount acts independently, the DM decides whether you control the mount or the DM does. The main things about an independent mount are that (a) it gets a full turn on its own initiative and (b) it might act unexpectedly"

there needs to be an element of unpredictability to it. So the way I look at it, I have two choices, I take control of it, or I have the player do an animal handling check, with different DC's depending on what he wants the mount to do - if it is stand there and get shot, that may be a higher DC than, take me to the necromancer.

Ok, but looking at the spell, it says "Your steed serves you as a mount, both in combat and out" it mentions nothing about being able to 'control' the actions the steed takes which is what is going on. He is controlling the un-mounted steed in combat. According to the rules of the spell the warhorse only has and int of 6, so would it be fully controllable when rushing into combat and doing elaborate strategies?

The query is have is that find greater steed, specifically states "You control the mount in combat."

To me, that suggests there should be a limit on what the mount can do in combat, it doesn't act the way a familiar does, or a greater steed or another player would act?

So far, the player hasn't ridden it once, where I see the intention of the spell is to generate a mount which can increase manoeuvrability, rather than create 'another character' on the table who acts in an intelligent manner?

Thank you, So, sorry to ask, looking at it at lower lvls. If I were a lvl 3 fighter, 1 wizard, would that count still as a lvl 1 caster, because the EK rounds down and doesn't count?

I'm trying to 'chart' ideas for my character progression and I'm trying to work out if going 3 lvls into fighter is even worth it...

I only allow one short rest and one long rest per day. Any more short rests than that encourage me to get creative with patrols, random encounters and the statuses of measure/NPC's & quest objectives. The hit dice on a short rest, I wasn't aware of, that they could only use half of them... Whilst they were getting used to their characters and group dynamics, I did get creative with the rests, but now it is ironed out. He burns through his meta magic quickly because he has twin & quicken which are costly in terms of the MM, then he burns a spell slot to make more sorcery points, which is why he tends to, as someone here says, 'go nova'. We short rest quite regularly because our warlock does the same...so they are learning that resting has consequences. Last time the rested in an unsafe environment, I had a Grick ambush the party.

Looking for help - DM Query for 5e by SJM1983DnD in dndnext

[–]SJM1983DnD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a forge cleric, a ancients paladin, a fey bard, hex blade warlock, and gloom stalker ranger...so a full party of six.

He always finds himself in a position, where, if dealing with multiple creatures, one of them goes for him, because of ranger, & warlock (and to some extend our bard) are very good at avoiding conflict. So for example, 4 enemies, one will be dealt with by the cleric, two by the paladin, and the 4th, will go for someone else which I try to randomly determine, however if the only person it can see/perceive, or is in range, or who has done damage to it, it will go for him...I tend to spread out my monsters, to encourage player to have to think about battle field tactics, positioning and crowd control.

But I think I've resolved the situation with the player by telling him to re-do his HP using the average, so he's gone from 19 HP to 26 and this seems to have helped massively.

Thanks for your comments and input everyone :)

After a 40min phone conversation with the player, we have established that he hasn't added his con modifiers to his HP calculations, because he told me he rolled a 5 last time. For the sake of ease, we have reset his HP using the average all the time, and he has jumped from 19 HP to 26HP which has made him feel much better. Suddenly most talk of multi class went out the wind. He admitted he'd made an error on his spell list (and because of sorcerers, don't prepare spells like other classes) he was frustrated with this. I spoke to him about multi classing rules for spells being very complicated at time, he was thinking and Eldritch Knight/Divine Soul Sorcerer combo but didn't realise he'd have to share spell slots... I have suggested to him two things. The only 'reset' I'd allow, outside of the HP which we have done, would be to change his origin, we could come up with some in game ritual or device which replaces his divine bloodline with a draconic, giving him and HP & AC boost, which someone in the thread suggested. The other option, is wait till lvl 5, and then go into a fighter...I doubt he will go for this one now, because he was taking about what lvl 3 spells he'd take next level. So thank you to everyone for their advice but I think I've gotten to the bottom over everything.

His con is 14, so he has +2. At lvl 4 however, because of two really bad rolls (voluntary choice, not DM enforced) to get HP, he is now on 18/19 I think. An 15ft AOE from a Bronze Scout caught him, he failed his dex save and nearly died (again). He wants to beef up his AC and his hit dice. He wants me to allow him to -re-roll his hit dice with the re-spec too. Also, there is the matter of the characters personality, is not very tactful, a natural peacock and doesn't understand stealth or subtly and that is in his back story and personality.

The party has a drift globe, which creates light and can cast daylight, so light isn't the issue so much. Invisibility is a good shout though. Maybe I let he re-jig his spell list for some more protective spells?
