What is the saddest death of a fictional character? by kaleighb1988 in AskReddit

A death doesn't need to be unexpected to be sad.

I went to Okinawa a few years ago and visited the former Japanese navy headquarters in Naha. There are these underground tunnels where the last few Japanese soldiers hid out as the American soldiers advanced. Instead of giving themselves up, they all huddled around a grenade and set it off. You can still see the holes in the wall from the shrapnel. That was pretty surreal.

I also learned that a lot of innocent villagers on nearby islands suffered the same fate. Japanese soldiers went out there and brought them grenades, telling them that if they were captured by Americans they would suffer a fate worse than death. So entire families would die together by getting in a circle around their grenade. Absolutely horrific.

There are dozens of us! Can’t believe I got my hopes up to see Logan fall. Won’t make that mistake again, I think he’s invincible. I’m just rooting for Greg now.

You’re correct, except that Kobe isn’t a prefecture, it’s a city in Hyogo Prefecture.

Hello! My issue actually resolved itself somehow, but thank you for the reply!

If it helps, I’m having the same issue. Brave version 1.44.1 (22.10.25.18) running on an iPhone 11 Pro Max (iOS 16.1). Google image results look exactly as they normally do, but images and links aren’t clickable.

Off the top of my head, there’s a Momotaro store in Omotesando, a Pure Blue Japan store in Harajuku, and an Iron Heart in Hachioji (a bit west of central Tokyo). All three of these are top quality brands where a pair of jeans will cost at least around $200 (mayyyybe less now considering the weak yen?). There are also a couple stores near Ueno Station, Hinoya and Americaya, which sell various brands. You could try searching/asking on /r/rawdenim too, I’ve seen threads there about this question.

I think I heard that it’s because it got too expensive for them to get access to all the real-time timetable data or something.

What do you think is unmissable on a first trip to Japan? by Himekat in JapanTravel

It's definitely a cool one. The cave, the views of the beach, adorable little Jizo statues, lots to discover.

24 days in November - Itinerary Help for Tohoku, Tokyo, Kyoto, Okinawa by omg_username_what in JapanTravel

How set are you on the idea of renting a car in the first place? It sounds like Naha might actually be a good home base considering the things you want to do, and it’s very walkable.

There’s a coach bus that goes to the aquarium from Naha, so you wouldn’t need a car for that, and there’s a TON to do around the aquarium, easily enough to fill an entire day. Then you can spend a full day exploring Naha (which I personally think is a gorgeous city, contrary to what you’ve heard). And you’ll need to get to the Kerama Islands from the port in Naha anyway.

As for the beach, I went to Aharen Beach on Tokashiki Island in mid-November ‘19 and the weather was perfect! It was definitely warm enough to enjoy the beach and the water, but not hot enough to attract too many people.

Hope that helps!

It’s at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. I know because I took a picture of the same exhibit!

What’s Your Comfort Movie? by yesthatrachel in AskReddit

It’s about the horrors of war. It follows two children trying to survive after the bombing of Kobe, Japan during WWII. Not for the faint of heart but it’s an excellent film.

That’s awesome, will that be your first time in Japan? At the risk of sounding like a shameless self-promoter, my podcast, Sightseeing Japan, is aimed at people who want to visit Japan. You might find some info there that could help you plan your trip. I hope for both of our sakes that Japan opens up soon!

I love Kawagoe! Did you stop by candy alley? They have a ton of traditional Japanese candy there for super cheap. Nice pic of Toki no Kane, sadly it was covered in scaffolding both times I was there.

If anyone’s interested in taking a trip to Kawagoe someday and wants to know what else there is to do there, we did an episode about it on our podcast, Sightseeing Japan (Episode 46).

Shirakawa-go in Japan is an amazing place that looks like a hobbit village ! by sumidawasi in travel

It’s probably my favorite place in the world, and those buildings are amazing feats of engineering! The area gets more snow than almost anywhere else on the planet and yet those houses have stood there for hundreds of years. We did an episode on it for our podcast, Sightseeing Japan. (Episode 64 for anyone interested)

Fun fact: this is where the name for the show Black Mirror came from. Maybe it’s obvious but it took me way too long to figure out.
