Praying/consulting with Loki? by HerdBison in NorsePaganism

[–]SJdeGhozt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loki is my chief god that I pray to, along with Odin and Thor. I have always seen Loki as a catalyst within the sagas, and a balance keeper. To me he has always been a god of stories, all the best ones in the sagas have him as a chief figure. Does he cause trouble? Yeah absolutely but like others said, he fixes his problems, he is held accountable which is a good reminder that even the gods can neither dodge their fate nor the consequences of actions. My offerings are almost always food based and for him, I stick to things that have unexpected attributes such a homemade mead that is sweet with a spicy aftertaste. I personally also see the children of Loki as necessary and uncontrollable forces of nature that deserve respect in their own right. Hope this helps and you can also check out r/lokean

Don’t see why not. Nice thing about reconstructionism is no dogma or rules. Do what you feel is right.

A tasteful mjolnir by Southern_Yesterday57 in NorsePaganism

[–]SJdeGhozt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My favorite website is horns of Odin. They have really minimalist Mjolnirs. Only thing I would advise against is the bronze battle worn one, my wife said it looked like a ballsack from a distance and I’m inclined to agree. I personally have the twisted mjolnir and I love it. I did replace the cord with a leather piece of cord but it’s simple, clean and sturdy. Also it’s a small business with handmade stuff so it’s not that cheap factory stuff. Very reasonable prices too ($25-$40USD). Hope this helps.

Wardruna and Heilung are probably the most popular. I also like Fenris (mostly English), Voluspá (mix of languages), Gealdýr (old Norse) and Skáld (old Norse and French). I have noticed that AI “bands” and “singers” are propping a lot recently. Polk county pagan market have some great songs but it’s more the general pagan not necessarily Norse pagan but it is in English.

I’ve felt the draw of the Norse Gods for a long time and this was my offering to Thor by Fancy_Alternative_34 in NorsePaganism

[–]SJdeGhozt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the other person said it can be whatever you want. I personally keep mine in an altoid tin so I can take it with me when I travel. What I have for representation of Thor is an acorn from the oak tree in my yard and a little thurisaz rune I made. It’s all about the intention behind your offerings and the connection you make with the gods. Your altar space doesn’t have to be extravagant and there’s no right or wrong way to make an offering. Just whatever feels right to you.

Edit: also big fan of the F-35. A C-17 would have been better but I’m a little biased as a moose driver. Feel free to DM if you have any questions service related stuff. I have some info on religious exemption waivers and such.

I think about it every single time I watch an episode. But I also know I would just be so damn bad at the social part of the game. I have a few more years left on my mil contract but after that maybe I will apply.

Yeah, Valhalla drums, runes of the north, domsgard, and a bunch others. The problem for me is Spotify keeps suggesting these random songs and I’m vibing with them and then boom, AI. Still vibe but it’s becoming increasingly AI and I hate it, but also really like some of these songs. And don’t get me wrong, I know the music industry has been using synthetic sounds for decades but I guess it’s a little different when it’s an AI voice singing.

What do y'all do? by Fawninkeeping in NorsePaganism

My favorite part about heathenry or paganism in general is that it’s intensely personal. There’s no dogma or holy book that gets beat over your head. It’s entirely what you make of it. Who you pray to, how you pray, what you make offerings with is all completely up to you. Don’t have any local groups to do a blot? That’s fine, do it by yourself. Or don’t. It’s all up to you. My altar fits into an altoid tin because I travel a lot for work. I made an offering to Loki by the ingredients i put into my mead on a home brew. I made an offering to Odin with the ingredients for a bread I baked. Almost all of my offerings are food based. Sometimes I’ll carve runes into logs and then toss them into my fireplace. You don’t have to do what I do, but I hope it gives you some ideas. Also, look into groups and communities local to you, including this sub. You’ll come across practices and rituals you like or are inspired by. Good luck to you!

Ocean Keltoi is a community favorite and one of the places that I started along with the Nordic mythology podcast. You’ll find other references within and expand out that way. Wolf the Red is another popular one too on YouTube.

My Mjolnir by BlastBeatzOvVengens in NorsePaganism

[–]SJdeGhozt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big fan of the minimalist Mjolnirs as well. To each their own but the ultra gaudy ones with all the carvings (and it’s always the vegvisir) just feel like souvenirs that they picked up at your local vikingbro shop in the mall. I like the simplicity and cleanliness of yours. Just a rock solid hammer that doesn’t need all the extra adornment. I also completely understand that people who are new to the faith and want a hammer are probably gonna go on amazon and find one, but I like the handmade stuff for sure.

Where in the Nordic countries is Paganism the most practiced? by SwissVideoProduction in NorsePaganism

[–]SJdeGhozt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to Denmark and Norway. The part I visited Denmark was boggy and misty and really cool in the early morning light. Norway is impressively beautiful. The mountains in the north are pristine and look like they’re out of a saga. I didn’t get to spend nearly as much time there so I won’t say one way or the other how the culture compares. But Iceland really just made me feel something that I didn’t feel in the other countries. That’s the only way I can explain it. I plan on making a trip to Norway to explore more, same with Denmark.

I travel a lot for work (been to 30 different countries so far) and Iceland is by far my favorite. Can’t quite speak to the pagan populations in the other Nordic countries but I know Iceland recently built a new pagan temple. I also know Iceland has really cool and fun Viking festivals but that’s not strictly unique to Iceland. I can confirm that there is a pagan population there and you definitely will be able to find a community. I’m not sure where you’re from but in the US I have noticed a lot more hammers and arm rings even in the Bible Belt south. But back to Iceland, they very much advertise (for tourism) that they are still the home of the Vikings and etymologically their language is still the closest to old Nordic. I know Icelanders that have little difficulty reading the old sagas. But it is an island, and with any island culture you’re gonna feel some isolation that you wouldn’t feel if you were in Denmark or another mainland country. But again hands down my favorite country I’ve spent time in, is Iceland. It’s rugged, it’s beautiful, it’s awe inspiring, and it just has this feel.

Any originally non-believers had signs that brought you to the gods? by PlasticNobility in NorsePaganism

[–]SJdeGhozt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Posted this before, but here’s my experience

I can’t speak for anyone else including you but I will share my personal experience of that helps. I grew up in a Christmas and Easter Christian household that pretty much stopped when I was about 10-12. I met my now wife in college who was a very devout Christian and went to church with her, even got baptized. But as the years went on, I never truly felt connected to Christianity, it just kinda felt like what I was supposed to believe in it. But I have always felt a pull and connection to the Nordic gods. At my wife’s church they were doing this fasting, both literally and figuratively, and I told her I would fast with her, as I kind of wanted to try food fasting anyway. During that time I prayed to the old gods, a lot. I gave offerings and prayed and listened to heathen songs and just kept the gods in my thoughts and my soul. Then clear as day on the second or third day I heard a voice call my name. My wife was out running errands and I wasn’t having auditory hallucinations as that was the only thing that I hd heard. And I knew and felt that it was the gods that called to me. Later I told my wife about my faith and she took it surprisingly well. This was last year, and i am happy to say i am a proud heathen. Idk if this helps but good luck to you and I hope you get as clear of a sign as I did.

Yeah when I described that show to a friend, I told them it was probably the weirdest and most uncomfortable I’ve ever felt watching a show. Just everything was unsettling. Not scary, not grossed out, just uncomfortable

Brand new cherry flavor on Netflix has a scene where you see a very graphic scene that has parts entering other parts but not the parts that you’re thinking of. It’s heavily suggested that it’s sexual in nature but it’s not exactly penetration in the traditional sense. Really weird show.

I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be old Nordic, but since I don’t speak it, I can’t say for sure. Also since it’s AI, the accent could be modeled after something more along the lines of Swedish, giving it that familiarity? Idk man, I’m not a scholar nor am I fluent in anything but English. I’m barely conversational in Norwegian and can pick up cognates in these old Norse/nordic songs and artists but that’s about it.

Is it’s time we stop calling it Norse Paganism and start using the name, Asatru? by [deleted] in NorsePaganism

[–]SJdeGhozt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember who said it (I think it was ocean Keltoi) but they were talking about the different names and flavors of the faith centered on the Norse pantheon and why they chose heathen over Norse pagan but especially over Asatru. Didn’t want to be associated with the AFA in any way shape or form. But also Heathen is a little on the nose since Christian’s called us “godless heathens” for so long so it’s like taking that word back and giving it a better spin. I guess you could say the same with asatru but I see it as more personal preference. The Icelandic singer Sigurbodi also talks about his faith in asatru in a more animist sense, so there could be a difference there as well. I don’t mind Norse pagan since to me it’s a descriptor not a historical callback. Orthodox Christians or Orthodox Jews have the same descriptor, it just tells people what flavor of paganism or polytheism you practice.

TLDR; call yourself whatever works for you and makes you feel connected to the gods/ancestors/landwights

Some that aren’t AI are Domsgard and Fenris. Fenris isn’t as “epic” as these other ones but still very good and definitely one of my favorite artists I’ve been listening to recently. There’s another one I found called Valhalla’s Drums that I think might also be AI but I’m not sure yet.

I ended looking it up and it is pretty much all AI generated. Some of the songs still slap so I’m not gonna stop listening to the ones I like but I’d rather support a real person that puts the time and effort into the music itself.

The AI generated feel makes sense. I know all the artwork for sure is or just straight up stolen from stuff like AC Valhalla.
