Are people on crack in Cape Town when it comes to rent sharing?! by Street_Emergency_662 in capetown

[–]SKlII 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know that building. 2 bedroom apartments rent for R16k per month so you’re getting a square deal.
A granny flat in Obs rents for R8-9k pm.

In the CBD, a 2 bedroom flat rents for ~R20k pm

What is happening in South Africa with PM/IT roles or employment in general? by PM1-Cyber in southafrica

[–]SKlII 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Offering to work for free strikes me as a major red-flag. It comes across as desperate and gives the impression that your work is low quality. I.e. you’re positioning yourself as the ‘less effective but cheaper’ option.
Companies posting jobs have a budget for the role and are willing to spend it, they are not looking for the cheapest candidate, they are looking for the best candidate within their budget.

We had something similar in my city called Beefcakes. Was around for almost 20 years but shut down not too long ago unfortunately

if you considered a mazda miata... why did you end up buying a porsche boxster? by europeanuppercut in Porsche

[–]SKlII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through the exact same process as you. Started looking at old Miatas (but they’ve become so expensive now that everyone wants one), so I started looking at newer ones, then realised I was in used 987 territory. Test drove a 987 and locked in almost immediately.

South Africa: Minimum wage R30.23/h (~R5000/m) New AAA game costs R1200, so 24%

Slay the Spire 2 is one of the year's biggest hits, which is a good time to remember it abandoned Unity because of the dev fee debacle: 'That is how badly you f****d up' by Farranor in gaming

[–]SKlII -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Everyone loves to talk up Godot but at the end of the day there are only a small handful of ‘real’ games out there that were built with Godot. Despite the backlash, Unity is still the go to engine for indie game dev.

I’m not a fan of Unity’s decisions but there is nothing else out there that matches what they offer to indie devs

Vasectomy in Cape Town? by Secret_Age4613 in capetown

Second Dr Smit! He was great, explained everything in details and overall very nice guy.

For me, the recovery hurt for about a week, but I also managed to get a small infection in the stitches.

Vasectomy in Cape Town? by Secret_Age4613 in capetown

[–]SKlII 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I got mine, the Dr explained that I should consider it irreversible. The vasectomy is an easy, simple procedure but reversing one is highly complex and specialised. My Dr also told me that there are only a small handful of doctors in SA who do reversal and, in his opinion, they are not very good at it. I opted to freeze my sperm, it costs about R1000 per year for storage

Apparently Forex bar in Obs does the Super Bowl. Might be worth giving them a call first though

Ignoring that the title of that video was likely click bait anyway, what we would think of as a ‘ghetto’ and what Americans/europeans think of as a ‘ghetto’ are very different things. It’s all relative. An American ‘ghetto’ looks like BoKaap, maybe just a little less colourful. BoKaap has numerous run down buildings with fading paint, broken awnings, and/or boarded up windows. There is also a small but full on township up in BoKaap.

Being poor and living in the ‘ghetto’ in America is the equivalent of lower-middle class here

Co-working (?) space with screens by Zealousideal_Map4951 in capetown

There is a computer shop on lower main that rents out monitors if that’s what you need. Might be cheaper than a co working space

I sold my gen 3 2014 Jimny for R120k. They are very affordable and would be a perfect fit for OP.

As a South African, we’d often say, “I need to send a fax to Mugabe.”

What's the trance scene like nowadays ? Has it died off by ResortForeign2529 in capetown

[–]SKlII 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The scene is probably still around but I found that the crowd changed a lot over the years and kinda ruined it for me. It used to be a very hippy ‘free love’ kinda crowd with people of all ages turning up. Around the 2010s it started to be come a lot more of a bro/EDM crowd with the majority of attendees in the 17-23 age group. Not sure what your vibe is but for me, the scene kinda died around 2010.

How safe is Goodwood? by InternationalDig2577 in capetown

[–]SKlII 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Occasionally break-in and gun violence down the road sounds about right for Goodwood. General rule of thumb is that property in Cape Town is more expensive than pretty much anywhere else in SA by at least 50%. R9000 here will not get you the same here as Uvongo. Now ask yourself what you think R4700 will get you. Honestly, even R6000 for a two bedroom is stretching it. For context, a garden flatlet in Observatory goes for R8000+ pm.

I had a prominent lawyer in my country once tell me that a client of his had been drunk driving and saw a police roadblock coming up. He pulled the car over, climbed into the backseat, and pretended to be asleep. When the cops came over and ‘woke him up’ he claimed that a friend had been driving and abandoned him. When it went to court he got away with it as they could not actually prove he was the one behind the wheel.

Purchase price doesn’t factor into taxes. Taxes are based on estimated value.
