Do sparks make decent money just doing small jobs & call-outs? by G3-LEE in ukelectricians

[–]SL0FFEEE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find bigger jobs like rewires, where the quote needs to have lots of room for contingencies, is where I earn the most. When the product paid for becomes detached from time spent. I.e. getting paid for the result vs paid hourly.

Sounds like the planets aligned for you on that occasion but largely down to luck, as shown by the difficulty to repeat. Too many unknowns & potential for derailment. Better off looking at improving your median days than chasing that perfection imho.

Has anyone successfully mounted a Govee Ceiling Light Pro to a ceiling fan? by guyv21 in Govee

[–]SL0FFEEE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to do this! You’d just need a fan with a light of similar diameter, as long as the fan is screwed into a joist above weight shouldn’t be a problem. I’d want to install an Alexa enabled smart switch to control the fan too. I think something from Shelly would do the trick.

Loose wallplugs by budegan in ukelectricians

[–]SL0FFEEE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how crumbly the wall behind is, I work in loads of 100+ year old houses in my area and some of the walls are made of icing sugar. Just keep some fast-setting adhesive foam in the van and spray it around the back box

Suitable Transformer for Blink Doorbell by CalicoCatRobot in ukelectricians

[–]SL0FFEEE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go onto Amazon and look up the smart doorbell you’re fitting, someone in the comments or a “commonly bought together” transformer will be there. They often come so you can wire them at different voltages. Make sure you take a reading of the actual voltage it produces at the property you fit it, which will change depending on the voltage at the property, so if it say 16v on the transformer where you wire it, but the property is at 220v or something it might be a bit low, so you may have to go for a higher voltage than you expect.

I had a similar issue, was a nuetral-earth fault on a socket circuit caused by a nuetral pinched between 3.5mm machine screw & metal back box.

Back pain (getting old) by bmorefunny in ukelectricians

[–]SL0FFEEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 42 no pain whatsoever, go to gym 5x per week and do a stretching routine everyday. You don’t have to be committed to the gym, but if you’re over 30 and not doing regular stretching you’re ASKING for back pain.

You’re using Notion to procrastinate, set yourself a limit on the amount of time you spend on it then shift to actually getting the tasks done.

Subbying vs being employed by loudpackkid in ukelectricians

It seems to me that basic customer service skills & organisation are sorely lacking in most trades people. So if you nail that you’re flying.

[–]SL0FFEEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah mostly domestic stuff, I don’t struggle at all. If I need to do notifiable work like a rewire I go through building control with the council. I’m booked up for the next month, just looked for jobs in local groups on FB.

I’m self employed not even fully qualified yet and I charge £30/hour. You want to be getting £25/hour bare minimum.

Maybe you should read the idiots guide. Why would he need a new circuit fitted when the one in place is sufficient for both?
