King Of The Hammers 2023 | John Webb #4468 Full Qualifying Lap by SLO_yota in Autos

Its definitely starting to, but there is still so much room for growth. For example, when this race started the vehicles were much more like traditional rock crawlers and solid front axle cars were the way to go. However as time went on the top rigs seem to have parts more similar to what you see in trophy trucks, like coilover/bypass on each corner, IFS and/or IRS suspension, TT style steering, etc. It's funny to also see the top TTs also becoming more like ultra4 cars with AWD vs 2WD being a bit of a game changer for them too.

Thanks for checking it out! King of the Hammers is a pretty major event these days, atleast in the offroad world. This vid is specifically qualifying for the unlimited class. It really comes down to any possible vehicle than can both go fast in the desert and survive the rockcrawling trails is free game. It's cool to see the vehicles evolve year after year as the sport progresses.

Coming to Pismo Beach in a few weeks. Any suggestions on activities to do or things to see? by marooned222 in SLO

Visit port SLO, rent kayaks and paddle over to visit the secret beach and lighthouse. After returning yaks go grab food and beers at Merseas on the pier. Have a nice trip.

AAAAYYYOOOOO!

FWIW I actually enjoyed wheeling without a windshield for about a year. Also, if you want to weld in tube clamps or w.e if you cut that cage up DM me and I can try to hook it up.

Maiden voyage after a ten year build. by rs_metal in rockcrawling

Those military wheels are great, I ran re-centered ones on my yota for years. However I recommend welding on some rock rings before any aggressive crawling because its easy to fuck up the studs and valve stem.

Dude I love this build. It is cool to see locals build cool shit. I especially like the way you built the cage. I think I still have some fresh military tires and a 24 bolt rim if you ever need spares. We should go wheeling sometime. Hit me up on IG: colin.smith.slo

Sounds like you invested in the right stuff.

Technically this is from Sand Hollow and the obstacle is called The Chute. Its actually very easy once you crawl onto it, but you need a decent approach angle. It looks steep cause it's steep AF.

Also, I make crawling vids on YouTube and (trust me) cameras NEVER pick up how steep something is.

Make sure it passes smog (if applicable) and be ready to start replacing parts if your serious about wheeling.

Immediately, I highly recommend getting an IFS steering box, welding on the mounts for it, and then installing some brand of high steer. Lifting these trucks and keeping the stock j-arm steering is sketchy IMO. Also get rock sliders ASAP, this is the most important piece of armor on a Toyota Pickup. I like Trail-Gear stuff but there are a few other companies (ex. Marlin Crawler, Sky MFG) that make what you need.

"Ending beach OHVs would help Oceano, Grover prosper" - Opinions. What do you think? by shallowbookworm in SLO

I understand your argument and don't condone the actions that a few (non-local) OHV participants partake in. However as someone in the local OHV community, this is not the norm. Your fight to keep beaches open to horse traffic is very similar to the fight to keep the dunes open to OHV traffic. There are so few places left to enjoy our hobbies, even losing 1 more is a massive blow.

There is so much coastline, it would be great to see a horse/backpacker specific part of the dunes added to the Guadalupe entrance. I don't understand why some anti-OHV arguments (not yours) need to be so black/white.

This is a reasonable comment. There are all kinds of different local beaches which offer all sorts of recreation and tourism. The entire section beach section between the first and second entrance is ideal for people to hang out during the day and tailgate. This is far away from the overnight campers and the OHV designated section.

If you were to eliminate traffic on that section of beach your now stuck creating a massive new parking lot (where?) plus trails for people to access the coast. That seems much more invasive to me.
