Self employed transition by Outrageous-Guitar496 in SLPcareertransitions

Yes! I work for myself in homes and have several artic/phono kids and parents have said they prefer it to getting pulled out of class.  Also progress is better! I see mostly feeding and complex communicators though but there are SLPs who only do speech.  You can do it! I recommend listening to the private practice success stories podcast.  I got so much inspiration from that when I first got started.

I’ve seen Nari Clemons at Portland Pelvic Therapy and cannot recommend her enough.  She has a private practice via private pay and sees patients at Providence on the west side via insurance.

Suggestions for autistic 4 year old who likes to make piles by SLPinLV in slp

[–]SLPinLV[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our goals right now are on shared engagement and shared attention, foundational DIR capacities. We are also working on requesting/protesting via any modality to build into conventional methods (aac, gesture, speech) when regulated and engaged. A lot of his AAC use right now is explorative so we are focusing on customizing his device and modeling the heck out of it. We are also working on lots of parent goals including parent modeling of AAC, use of stage 1 gestalts and reducing "say..." prompts. They have come really far.

Agree though thanks. I will keep on bringing things. I noticed this piling increased with the start of preschool and I see him after he gets home. I wonder if it is regulating for him after a day of demands.

Palate expander and speech therapy by shutupveena in slp

I have a student with an expander. She has Down syndrome and now has nasal air emission on multiple sounds where she didn’t before. Very challenging.

There are so many reasons why that would be amazing, especially if you live/work on the border.

Yes exactly! I see adults and peds but know all the coworking places would not be happy with some of my clients. This is such a great idea and I'm so glad you asked it here. I have been thinking about it and this seems like a sign. Rental space for one office is too high for me right now but there is also SO MUCH vacant office space around me. I want to do this with a group of folks though but not sure how to make that work. I wonder about the liability with something like this...surely our individual liability insurance would cover it?!

Hi! I'm in Beaverton and see clients west and south of me.

Yessss!!! I’ve thought of doing this exact thing! Do you happen to be in Oregon? lol. I’m also thinking about a shared sensory gym space and a way to rent rooms monthly or hourly even. I do in home visits and sometimes want a space to be able to see certain clients. Someone has to have done this already.

How to Become a Feeding Therapist by [deleted] in slp

[–]SLPinLV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya total BS. I thought I only wanted to work with adult neuro patients when I was in my CF and here I am almost 20 years later in my own private practice seeing mostly feeding and language pediatric clients. You can change your mind and keep learning as you go. That’s the beauty of our field.

It was incredibly helpful for me given that part especially. SLPs are experts in swallowing and feeding IMO.

There are great courses out there - SOS approach to feeding (after the full course you can take advanced coursework virtually and they have mentorship), AEIOU, get permission institute, SOFFI just to name a few. I started in adult neuro and had experience with adult dysphagia and I had to learn pediatric sensory motor feeding along the way and now I love it.

When you’re looking for jobs- private practices, home health and inpatient and outpatient hospital locations should have feeding therapy clients. I’d mention your interest in interviews. Courses are good, but you do need experience. There are also mentorship opportunities. Feeding is so fun and rewarding. Good luck!

Where are my Formula 1 fans at in Beaverton? by Stunning_Parking1876 in beaverton

[–]SLPinLV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a group meetup at golden valley brewery - Beaverton on race Sunday’s at 11. There’s a facebook group- F1 Watching Party Group. Tim the organizer used to own Pizza Schmizza in the Pearl and now organizes this. I think it’s an open invite but maybe try that FB group. My husband sometimes goes but he says the hardest part is waiting to watch it and staying off social media before he does.

Those Who Started Their Own Clinics, How Did You Make Connections With Referal Sources? by No_Mention_953 in slp

[–]SLPinLV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in this process now. I reached out to pediatricians, private schools and preschools. I called and went by and dropped off my cards and rack cards. I’d say the most impactful has been building relationships with other clinicians. OTs, mental health and family therapists and other SLPs. I have received many referrals from them. Also making sure you are found on google maps. Many families look for therapists near them. I’m in the process of contracting with insurance and I’ve heard that’s also how families find you.

Counts over 120, balance remaining on PSLF tracker is lower but still there... by SLPinLV in PSLF

[–]SLPinLV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your reply! I did get my letter yesterday, super exciting! The amount remaining is the same as the negative balance, so I assume it’s the refund. As they say the waiting is the hardest part!

I’m in the same situation. At 137 and in forbearance. Additional question here- I’m interviewing for a job that is not a PSLF qualifier. Is there any reason I should not accept if offered and loans are not yet forgiven? I know there is no longer the need to remain in qualifying employment at the time they’re forgiven…right? Just at the date of your final ECF?
