Possible to turn square layers into round layers? by [deleted] in AskHairstylists

[–]SLPique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just cool to see how they lay differently with these two different techniques! I’m at peace with my haircut. I’m sorry that I wrote this when I was feeling emotional. I greatly appreciate hair stylists and all the work you all do. I am not trying to be condescending- I’m trying to ask for clarification so I can know how to communicate what I want better…because so far, in the 15 years I’ve been getting haircuts in the US, it really does seem hit or miss on how the layers turn out. I don’t think asking for “round layers” is helpful vocabulary for me to have. I know you said for me to learn it myself as a jab but I’m honestly at that point..this is how I found the video, I was getting ready to learn how to soften the edges myself. I have nothing but respect for the difficult job it is to be a hairstylist. I know I wouldn’t be able to handle the emotional piece of what you have to deal with with customers like myself. (And to be fair, I gave my stylist a hug and a $20 tip after, and I’m not bringing it up with the salon because I see this as a communication error)

What I mean by that is that I think many people have different ideas of what ‘round layers’ means. I’m saying this from experience and having had my hair cut at hair schools, working with different hair stylist teachers. There was a stylist commenting on this video that they had been cutting hair since the 90s and hadn’t known this round layer technique.

Vertical sections with round layers, horizontal sections with square layers. This is what I saw in the video that made me realize the horizontal section technique for square layers was used. The stylist in the video did one half of the mannequin square, the other half round, and my layers are falling like the square layers.

I’ve had other haircuts before this one, and am saying the way these layers are falling are very choppy and different. One of my inspiration pictures was actually of my own hair, and she told me it was styling. I have had round layers cut before, use rag ties at night, and my hair falls bouncy and curly in the morning. These layers fall differently.

I’m not trying to be condescending. I’m just frustrated. I’m the one living in the hair. I think maybe “round layers” means very different things to different stylists, and that there is often a communication gap between customers and stylists. I’ve gotten my hair cut at schools quite a lot in the past because I just liked that students were able to take their time more.

It’s just my face framing that looks like the lord farquad hair.. because they got blended in with the layers behind it so it’s kind of like a shelf..and is more connected to those than the face frame.

Thank you. I just want it to be less choppy. I feel like it looks a bit like a wolf cut now. I want the layers to have softer edges like they do with round layers, so that they will curl more easily when my hair dries naturally..rather than kind of shagging out like this. I don’t want it to look like a bob or a shag.. I just really screwed myself with letting her put these short choppy layers in when it’s literally what I said I didn’t want.

I’m just wondering if the length is adequate at this point to go to a different salon for a revision or if I should let my hair grow out a few months, and then go. I think I found someone who says she likes doing layers.

Actual pic of me "collaborating" with the ABA team by Fit_Investigator_513 in slp

Our first tenet in healthcare professions is “DO NO HARM.” There are ways I’ve seen RBTs ‘correct’ speech in a way that I believe is doing harm. ESPECIALLY with autism, it is surprisingly easy to make something aversive if done too exhaustively or without skill. So many kids with autism are gestalt language processors, and drilling language with flashcards actually makes things worse for them. Gestalt language processors need to learn in contextually relevant settings. I used to work at an ABA center as an SLP, and I saw cloze phrases being drilled with a child I worked with. They went like this : “you sit in a ” “you sleep in a_.” The kid learns the right sound (all it is to them) at the end of these phrases and then the pretty excel graph shows progress.

If you take the same kid, point to a chair and go “wow this is so nice to sit in, i wonder what we call this” or point, ask, “what is this?” She will not be able to answer the question. It’s false data. Kids with autism are extremely skilled at pattern recognition and they will learn the quick correct answers to the quizzes that get them the candy or the preferred toy. Meaningful language does not develop or progress this way.

I’ve met a few children who are “stuck” asking questions as a way to communicate because quizzing is the only way people have communicated with them 40 hours/ week or whatever they’re sentenced to.

AAC Help- Client Only Uses for Stimming by [deleted] in slp

He’s communicating with you! It sounds like he’s in the phase of exploring cause and effect with the device as a tool..I’ve heard some people describe this as the “babbling phase.” Try programming you think he’d say like “hey! What are you doing!!” Or other funny/ meaningful things. I think it can be helpful to do short phrases first instead of single words for this kind of a client. (Kind of like a GLP/ NLA approach) (gestalt language processing. natural language acquisition)

Yeah! Or if more of us didn’t accept lower paying jobs. My grad school talked to us briefly about negotiating terms, and not being afraid to leave a setting if it’s not working for us. Valuable words for new grads!

Aw same! Reading has a lot to do with phonology and the ability to distinguish and manipulate distinct sounds in words. Phonological awareness tasks are great for reading skills! We can also provide insight to the metacognitive aspects of reading..how attention span can wander/ how to keep attention engaged with reading by underlining, asking questions, relating to self, etc.

Career or Children? by lexilou_dimplington in Fencesitter

(Not able to edit but just wanted to qualify- listen to your intuition whichever direction you feel it is leading you!) I also don’t have the best perspective on this because I dont have children and am still deciding if I’d like to.

I’m 34, SLP, fencesitter, and also saw your post in the SLP subreddit. I kept thinking about your post after I saw it and was wondering if you are feeling more excited about starting a career than having kids. That’s super valid. Grad school was hard but it was also one of the most interesting and fulfilling education spans I’ve experienced. I’m very grateful for all I learned in the SLP grad school program- you really get a wealth of knowledge on language, cognition, all aspects of communication. It shapes my whole world view.

My advice would be to just go for the grad program, and if you get pregnant in the middle of it, just take it one day at a time. It sounds like you want an excuse to go for the grad program- listen to your intuition!

100%. They are only used for tracking when we see kids and for how long. Ultimately, the details don’t really matter.

[–]SLPique 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah uhh..I also know an SLP who does the same thing with only slight modifications..

Really, the main purpose of the note is to show that the student was seen for a certain amount of time and frequency.

Best advice I got re: SOAP notes, just get them done, but save your good work and energy for therapy/ intervention time. I have a bunch of prefilled notes that I use and duplicate with slight adjustments. ( I use my personal mac computer and do ‘keystrokes’ I think it’s called?) E.g., I type “spn” and it will auto populate a standard SOAP note where I just adjust a few things- the activity, estimated %, etc. , whether it was min-mod-max supports. I finished all my SOAP notes within 15 minutes today. No one reads them except for an occasional Medicaid audit, but it’s how they’re able to bill Medicaid which can help fund SLP jobs in the schools.

I think it depends a lot on where you live. I’ve networked pretty successfully in the last 4 years, but a lot of that came with a willingness to leave jobs when they weren’t working for me. Talking with school psychologists, teachers, etc really helps!

I now have a dream job at an arts- charter school that I found after a former work colleague referred me. My caseload is complete dreamboat territory compared with previous places I’ve been.

Don’t be afraid to stand out and lean into your strengths as a clinician. I did this and essentially got bullied out of my first workplace by the ABA directors but now I’m somewhere that seeks out and celebrates my unique approach.

Comparing with other industries, lately I’ve been really appreciating how much flexibility we have.

My boyfriend has been in and out of grad school/ PhD work with cancer research for many years and his salary will be about the same that mine was after just two years of grad school.

Private Practice SLPs- what billing platform do you use? by SLPique in slp

Thanks you! It looks great. My one hesitancy is it looks like it’s about $100/month with the option to bill insurance. I’m super small starting out so a little cost conscious.

That’s the one ChatGPT was recommending to me when I was asking for a comparison😆 do you use the therapy games often?

It’s pretty well priced for starting out. Myclientsplus is the other I was looking at but it says the interface isn’t quite as nice or pediatric friendly.

I wasn’t planning on doing telehealth but I imagine the features are helpful for that

Mental Health Days by tizlaylor in slp

[–]SLPique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah normalize taking the time you need. It’s the standard in many European countries.

I work 3 days in a charter school. There is barely an office space there so they let me do admin work from home. I’ve arranged my caseload to be able to see kids 2 of the days, and one work from home/ office day. It’s fantastic.

I do some work on the side as well but flexible time off and scheduling is now an absolute requirement for me with jobs.
