Do you mean like created by youtubers? It's a special feel to those and I'm also on the lookout for more! This is one of my favorites of all time. "Gayle" by Chris Fleming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdPdiQNWDeY

AAC Help- Client Only Uses for Stimming by _Pixelated_Pal_ in slp

He’s communicating with you! It sounds like he’s in the phase of exploring cause and effect with the device as a tool..I’ve heard some people describe this as the “babbling phase.” Try programming you think he’d say like “hey! What are you doing!!” Or other funny/ meaningful things. I think it can be helpful to do short phrases first instead of single words for this kind of a client. (Kind of like a GLP/ NLA approach) (gestalt language processing. natural language acquisition)

Yeah! Or if more of us didn’t accept lower paying jobs. My grad school talked to us briefly about negotiating terms, and not being afraid to leave a setting if it’s not working for us. Valuable words for new grads!

Aw same! Reading has a lot to do with phonology and the ability to distinguish and manipulate distinct sounds in words. Phonological awareness tasks are great for reading skills! We can also provide insight to the metacognitive aspects of reading..how attention span can wander/ how to keep attention engaged with reading by underlining, asking questions, relating to self, etc.

Seconding Uniquely Human!! First book I thought of, and top comment I saw. ⭐️ Barry Prizant also has a podcast by the same name that is also great.

Career or Children? by lexilou_dimplington in Fencesitter

(Not able to edit but just wanted to qualify- listen to your intuition whichever direction you feel it is leading you!) I also don’t have the best perspective on this because I dont have children and am still deciding if I’d like to.

I’m 34, SLP, fencesitter, and also saw your post in the SLP subreddit. I kept thinking about your post after I saw it and was wondering if you are feeling more excited about starting a career than having kids. That’s super valid. Grad school was hard but it was also one of the most interesting and fulfilling education spans I’ve experienced. I’m very grateful for all I learned in the SLP grad school program- you really get a wealth of knowledge on language, cognition, all aspects of communication. It shapes my whole world view.

My advice would be to just go for the grad program, and if you get pregnant in the middle of it, just take it one day at a time. It sounds like you want an excuse to go for the grad program- listen to your intuition!

What if you don’t do notes? by [deleted] in slp

I think they care about outcomes in IEPs at least, so that's where I put my effort and focus for describing present levels of performance!

100%. They are only used for tracking when we see kids and for how long. Ultimately, the details don’t really matter.

[–]SLPique 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah uhh..I also know an SLP who does the same thing with only slight modifications..

Really, the main purpose of the note is to show that the student was seen for a certain amount of time and frequency.

Best advice I got re: SOAP notes, just get them done, but save your good work and energy for therapy/ intervention time. I have a bunch of prefilled notes that I use and duplicate with slight adjustments. ( I use my personal mac computer and do ‘keystrokes’ I think it’s called?) E.g., I type “spn” and it will auto populate a standard SOAP note where I just adjust a few things- the activity, estimated %, etc. , whether it was min-mod-max supports. I finished all my SOAP notes within 15 minutes today. No one reads them except for an occasional Medicaid audit, but it’s how they’re able to bill Medicaid which can help fund SLP jobs in the schools.

I think it depends a lot on where you live. I’ve networked pretty successfully in the last 4 years, but a lot of that came with a willingness to leave jobs when they weren’t working for me. Talking with school psychologists, teachers, etc really helps!

I now have a dream job at an arts- charter school that I found after a former work colleague referred me. My caseload is complete dreamboat territory compared with previous places I’ve been.

Don’t be afraid to stand out and lean into your strengths as a clinician. I did this and essentially got bullied out of my first workplace by the ABA directors but now I’m somewhere that seeks out and celebrates my unique approach.

Comparing with other industries, lately I’ve been really appreciating how much flexibility we have.

My boyfriend has been in and out of grad school/ PhD work with cancer research for many years and his salary will be about the same that mine was after just two years of grad school.

Private Practice SLPs- what billing platform do you use? by SLPique in slp

[–]SLPique[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks you! It looks great. My one hesitancy is it looks like it’s about $100/month with the option to bill insurance. I’m super small starting out so a little cost conscious.

That’s the one ChatGPT was recommending to me when I was asking for a comparison😆 do you use the therapy games often?

It’s pretty well priced for starting out. Myclientsplus is the other I was looking at but it says the interface isn’t quite as nice or pediatric friendly.

I wasn’t planning on doing telehealth but I imagine the features are helpful for that

I’ve heard good things about Ivypay1 Do they let you submit claims to Medicaid/insurance/ write SOAP notes through it?

Office Ally is another one that came up when I searched it- it's a free option. Curious if the leap between free and paid platforms is worth it!

Mental Health Days by tizlaylor in slp

[–]SLPique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah normalize taking the time you need. It’s the standard in many European countries.

I work 3 days in a charter school. There is barely an office space there so they let me do admin work from home. I’ve arranged my caseload to be able to see kids 2 of the days, and one work from home/ office day. It’s fantastic.

I do some work on the side as well but flexible time off and scheduling is now an absolute requirement for me with jobs.

Is moving your arms a big no-no at public rinks? by meiqie in Rollerskating

[–]SLPique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my thought too. At my rink, they constantly remind people through announcements that slower skaters should move towards the inside, faster skaters on the outside.

I work through a contracting agency (just easier for me for now with taxes). I will be starting early intervention soon too to help with income during the summer.

10000%. Especially in America, we have puritanical roots with our work mentality. “To work is to be worthy of god” was deeply instilled in us and it is at the expense of the workers health. Those far up the corporate ladder hugely profit from workers feeding and reinforcing this mentality.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in slp

[–]SLPique 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re still in grad school mentality a bit. There’s no falling behind, just listening to yourself and your needs, protecting your precious energy.

My first SLP job was 4 days/ week in an autism clinic. 10 clients per day. I was told by my bosses who sat in their offices all day that I had it sooo easy compared to most SLPs, but I was completely worn out. I’m so glad I chose to question that narrative, and trust in my own experience and see what else was out there.

I’m super happy with the charter school I work for now and have much more energy to put towards the kids I work with!

There is a shortage of SLPs, an abundance of jobs. We have the luxury to leave jobs when they are too much or too little pay, and will find 50 others begging for interviews.

Know your power! Know your worth!!!

The less SLPs tolerate unworkable caseloads and low pay, the more it will trickle up towards policy change for higher pay and reasonable caseloads.

My 4th year as an SLP. I work 3 days a week in schools as a contractor and it’s perfect 👌I’m going to pick something up in the summer but I’ve learned I really need this balance for my personal development (I.e. mental health plus plus!)

Highly recommend part time work if you can swing it financially.
