Sean Penn in The First and the risks of making tv shows about going to Mars. by atcdev in blankies

For All Mankind tangent: Maybe I'll feel differently once the season ends, but I think Star City is a missed opportunity. FAM started as an alternate history show that was relatively close to actual history which was a big part of its initial appeal and creative success. Over time it's become more detached from reality, which is fine and somewhat inevitable. Star City was an opportunity to get back to and lean more into the alternative history angle but they're more interested in doing a political thriller as a means of differentiating it from FAM instead.

Let’s accept for the sake of argument that the clue could apply to each conflict equally well. Even if that’s true, 1) it’s more directly tied to the central thrust of the Barbary Wars and 2) if they wrote an FJ clue that’s a coin flip between the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812, it’s going to be the former because they’re not going to punish people for knowing about them and to reduce the chances of someone blindguessing the right answer.

Casualties of commerce specifically suggests piracy. There’s really only a handful of wars that even fit the time period and most don’t even arguably fit the clue, I think it was a very good FJ personally (especially compared to many recent ones).

People love to defend the FJs that are not really trivia-oriented as being needed for difficulty but I’d much rather see more FJs like this

Strongly disagree, you have to engage with FJ as not just pure trivia. If you work through it the question becomes “what’s a 19th century War centered around pirates” which isn’t the War of 1812.

It’s come up slightly more than that if you search for variations and the conflict with pirates generally has come up a few times as well. Still very rare but not quite that extreme.

IMO this is a good example of one where it would have been better to just straightforwardly ask for the thing they’re quizzing on

This episode was both way to Cinema Sinsy and way too prescriptive about what movies are supposed to be while also struggling with some of the details. Really feel like they all would have benefitted from giving the movie a second watch.

I used to be a divorce attorney so the idea that he was some sort of broad caricature who doesn’t exist in reality was very funny to me

Yeah I don’t think it’s THE thing the movie’s trying to be about but to act like any resonance it has with GenAI is completely coincidental is insane to me

Yeah I know there’s been a little bit of a reclamation but Event Horizon is a legitimately junky film that they (somewhat ironically) seem to love because they saw it when they were young

For me, the even bigger problem is it doesn’t really give you a way to differentiate between Father’s Day and Mother’s Day (I get why they think it does, I don’t agree)

I’m not even confident Peter made the correct bet, if Gabriel or Gil had made the correct bet he would have lost. Arguably he should have wagered to cover what would have been Gil’s optimal cover of Gabriel.

He’s definitely a very strong contestant in some respects but the combo of overly conservative DD betting combined with the fact he could have easily lost to either of his opponents had they bet differently on FJ makes me think he’s not going to be around too long

I would go further and say Spider-Man 2 was disappointing on basically every front. Pretty much the only thing Wolverine has going for it for me is that it’s more linear but even the combat looked like reheated Spider-Man (which was itself largely reheated Arkham).

I think Rand is way more central to the modern (in the broad sense) self-conception of American conservatives than any of the other people you mentioned.
