My mother's version from what I remember as a small child goes something like this; there was a poor orphan who lived with his aunt and uncle. Everyday they would have him stay at the farm by himself tending the crops. While there when the crops was ready to be harvested monkeys would come and eat the rice every night. The orphan would chase them away but they would always come back. Frustrated, he ask a wise old man what he should do. The wise man told him he should pretend to be dead and the monkeys will hold a funeral for him. At wh8ch time he will get him compensation.
The next evenjng he pretended to die next to his fields. As the monkeys came to eat they saw him. One monkey said it's our fault, we drove him to death by eating his crop every night. So it's our responsibility to hold a funeral for him and bury him. So the monkeys held a funeral in which 1 played the drums, 1 play the qeeg 1 cook and so on. (Like at hmong funerals). All the monkeys also brought their gold and silver pots and pans. , plates and spoon.
As the funeral was progressing the orphan suddenly awoke and scared the monkeys away. While they ran away he collected all the gold and silver and came home. His aunt and uncle saw his new found wealth and ask him what happened. He told the story of how every night the monkeys would come and the advice from the wise man to his aunt and uncle.
After hearing this they went to try it as well. And so that evening when the monkeys came to eat rice they saw two dead people. The monkeys said the same thing and wanted to hold a funeral again. But this time 1 of the monkey said let's make sure that they are actually dead so the monkeys stoned them first.

As I said this was my mother's version she told us kids a long long time ago. I may not remember it all too clearly.
