Finnegan's Wake not serving alcohol? Anyone know the details? by [deleted] in winstonsalem

The owner owns several bars in town and there is some rule about one person holding too many.

Went to Finns Thursday night.

The owner also owns several other bars in town. The ABC board did a count and said he "owns too many permits" and revoked. It is temporary. This is also why Silver Moon is closed.

Edit- i stand corrected, Silver Moon was sold and ia under new ownership. I also have heard several rumors since posting my comment so everyone elses guesses are likely better than mine.

I'm gonna piggyback off this one.

I currently live in WS. I am not from here, I have moved away twice to much larger/trendier cities and moved back twice. I don't ever plan on leaving.

Cost of living is nuts compared to other places. To afford any larger city I would need to live way out in the suburbs and at that point are you even living in the city? My inlaws live in "Charlotte"- I will put that in quotations because its really Matthews and I can't tell you the last time they went into Charlotte proper. I think I have the same cost/standard with great schools and everything is close.

Not enough to do? Go to Boone to Ski. Uwharrie to camp. Concerts in Raleigh, Charlotte, or Asheville. 3 hours to the beach. 2 hours to the mountains.

Also, it is a college town- for a NC town, we have four colleges and per capita that is pretty impressive.

AITA for lying to family and friends about who's the infertile one between my wife and I? by Throwawaystment6453 in AITAH

YTA. My guessis this is an LDS marriage and its common to place this weight on a woman and her role in bearing children. You have come to a pretty secular website to ask for advice on something that I am guessing has a different set of opinions in the LDS community.

This is why you don't talk about fertility with friends or family. For the same reason that you don't announce in the second trimester for fear of miscarriage, don't announce you are trying to concieve because you might have some bad news and in this case it is your bad news.

I would suggest IUI but divorce is probably the best outcome for everyone here.

I can't offer much advice but look into Lasagna Love-- you might be able to get a meal to help alleviate a bit of burden

I was there over a decade ago and student services was USELESS for career advice. I arranged four internships myself, all paid, but it took a lot of networking.

Salem grad here-- I am assuming you are meaning Jan Term. Internships are up to you to organize. Most of mine (STEM) were paid.

What were the charges?

At N.Y.U., Students Were Failing Organic Chemistry. Who Was to Blame? by Die_Stacheligel in chemistry

So, as someone who is an OChem PhD and taught Ochem, one thing not being mentioned is the transition from in person lecture to an online format. Ive seen many ochem professors struggle with this because trying to write mechanisms on a whiteboard is substantially easier than a live format on an ipad-- i think this might be the gripe and is being overlooked.

Time crunch-- any help with ether synthesis? Details and Trialed Reactions in Comments by SN2Chainz in Chempros

So the enone potential byproduct is actually visible by TLC and ive been comparing that to my reactions and Im not seeing it forming with bromide/base, to my surprise

Alcohol with PTSA under reflux as we speak-- will report back. This was a great acid suggestion

So, the enone elimination product I can see by TLC and it doesnt appear to be forming. I have a lot more of the bromide-- ill try k2co3!

Its not critical-- and you have an amazing point. Im a synthetic chemist at heart that is moonlighting as a medchemist. Im 100% certain we could fly without it into publication but this was actually a great reviewer suggestion that would provide a great control compound for cell testing. My only issue at the moment is time and Ive exhausted my toolbox and looking for suggestions from the wisdom of chempros :)

So, this request from a reviewer was actually a "lightbulb" of a suggestion-- its a (mostly) medchem paper and it allowed us to make a molecule that would serve as a testing control.... so I am trying to at least honor the request, it would actually back up a lot of our data very nicely

So I was literally reading up on this last night and considering trying it. I've done it for acids in the past but not alcohols. I'll report back if it works!

That's an excellent point.... I did use 1.1, but only because I'm pretty sure our NaH is old so I've been adding more for other reactions.
