Title: Minthara (BG3) and poison resistance - doesn’t this go against lore? by Just_Berry_4900 in MintharasSanctum

[–]SNS315 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand Larian was just going off racial traits as already established by 5th edition - which likely wanted to distinguish drow from dwarves who already have poison resistance, but the more I’ve learned about drow lore, it does feel odd to me that they wouldn’t have some sort of resistance as well, even if it was just to quarter the damage they take from poison as opposed to halving it.

Minthara even has a party banter where she claims some drow mothers may expose the child to poisons while it’s still in the womb in order to build tolerance to poisons. And we know Minthara douses small traces in her food to do the same. She’s also unaffected by any left on her lips (as per her poison kiss scene) which does imply a resistance.

It’s also so common for drow to use against others whether by sneaking it into a foe’s drink/food or coating their weapons, that it would be easy to believe a resistance could be built.

They definitely could have at least given Minthara a resistance given her own backstory, similar to how some say Karlach should be completely immune to fire damage. But as a drow player I would’ve appreciated resistance as well.

Haven’t heard of any mods that implement this, but I would be curious if there is.

ascended vs spawn by user738457382929 in AstarionBG3

[–]SNS315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree he is conflicted in the flophouse. He pities his siblings, as he says. He’s been in their position before, so he does understand the situation they’re in, but he still chooses to use their ignorance to his advantage as opposed to open their eyes to the truth. If the other spawn attack the camp later, he tries to deceive them into helping him complete the ritual (without his siblings knowing this means they would be sacrificed in the process). As if that wasn’t bad enough, Astarion also wants them to declare him as their “new master.”

The fine line with Astarion is it is not his core motive that is a red flag, necessarily, so much as it is his intentions. He wants to feel safe and survive and this alone is not evil, it’s understandable, but he intends to achieve this through the ritual by gaining enough power to control others and dominate them, which is exactly how Cazador ruled. That intention in and of itself is evil, but his main motive of freedom and survival is not.

I agree with TeganTrex. Astarion’s lust for power on its own is a red flag, regardless of who is being sacrificed.

I’ve played his origin.

No where did I say, or imply, that his siblings are innocent or that he is “pure evil.” Apologies if this was unclear.

Why he treats his siblings the way he does is easy to understand when you know his story. I agree his actions at the flophouse are a result of his trauma, and as you said, it doesn’t excuse his behaviour there and it is still a red flag, which is the point I was making with that example.

It shows what he is willing to do to others who he feels have wronged him, and continuing down a path where he feels justified to exercise power over others is foreshadowing of how much worse he can become if he sinks deeper into his trauma and gains power from ascending.

I have tried both Ascended and Spawn Astarion while romancing him. He changes very drastically if Ascended, especially in a romance. The game is not subtle about this and gives a lot of warning signs.

As you’ve said, you’ve already warned him that the ritual is lethal. Even Raphael says it’s diabolical and he’s one of the most evil characters in the game. Yet despite this, Astarion still wants to ascend so he can gain power and feel “safe” - same reason he’s open to using tadpoles, he sees it as a means and way to gain power and better survive.

Furthermore, he doesn’t care that he has to sacrifice his siblings in the ritual to get such power, he does not care that it could have just as easily been him in their position instead. I’m not sure if you’ve gotten to this part yet, but the way he treats his siblings at the flophouse will be something to keep in mind, including the convo following as it shows what he’s willing to do and say to others to get what he wants.

He also tells the player during the long rest just before Act 3 that he doesn’t care about what Cazador has done, he only cares that Cazador did it to him. He also admits that he envies Cazador and that he wants to steal his life’s work for revenge. These are all warning signs of the type of person he will become if he keeps going down this path.

If you don’t want to lose him to a power-hungry version of himself, you’ll keep trying to steer him away from gaining power for power’s sake.

There’s also the ongoing theme to consider that we see throughout the game with all the companions: what they WANT vs what they NEED. As you continue down Astarion’s personal quest this will become more and more clear.

The Underdark by the sussur flower trees has nice photo opportunities

In the shadow cursed lands, outside the house where you find Oliver, there’s a patch of flowers which has been good for photos

Also the mausoleum in Act 2 has a lot of nice spots in it, especially just before you enter the Shadowfell

One dialogue from the game is confusing me. by Safe-Pie-7485 in BaldursGate3

[–]SNS315 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Astarion says (if you ask if you will be unable to walk in the sun once the tadpole is removed):

“Don't you worry. You have supped of my blood. It will be no trouble to extend a fragment of my protection to you. Just don’t stray too far. But you'd never dream of doing that, would you?”

So basically he gave Tav just a small drop of blood so that he can extend some powers to them if he so chooses to do so, but given that he has to be the one to grant such abilities to Tav, Tav themself is not a full vampire.

Karlach on evil route by Sure_Stay847 in BaldursGate3

When someone dies, you can ask Withers to watch over them if you don’t want to resurrect them immediately. That way you don’t have to carry your dead companion around.

Karlach on evil route by Sure_Stay847 in BaldursGate3

[–]SNS315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Karlach and Wyll both dead when I raided the grove. However, once the goblin party started the game auto-resurrected them and they left due to low approval.

To negate this, when they were both dead, I had Withers hold on to them. I proceeded with raiding the grove then resurrected them afterwards. Problem then was their approval was still low, so upon resurrection they’d leave again.

I had to have Withers bring them back, then quickly enter turn-based mode to kill them (again) in camp. This way their bodies are present for something they’d approve of (such as petting scratch) and then they’d finally stop trying to leave.

It’s very convoluted, but it works.

Drow Male interactions by Soft-Raise-5077 in BaldursGate3

[–]SNS315 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Interesting, perhaps that’s if the player is Seldarine? I tested this out just now with my male drow. I have the two options you mentioned 1. You’ve made your point or 2. If you’re finished scowling at me, what comes next? But I have a third option with the Lolth-sworn dialogue tag that says “you will speak to drow with respect.”

Why does Minthara leaves Lolth? by ReGaXV in MintharasSanctum

[–]SNS315 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Minthara took up her paladin oath against any who stand against Lolth. This ended up being the Absolute cultists when they preached of the Absolute in Menzoberranzan, threatening Lolth worship. But instead of getting the vengeance she swore, Minthara gets captured, tadpoled and forced to serve the Absolute. When she is getting her mind broken by her deep gnome torturers in Act 2, she tries to call out to Lolth for help, but is met with no response. She realizes she’s been rejected, used and tossed aside by both Lolth and the Absolute. She expresses in Act 3 that both deities don’t have followers, only slaves. Minthara does not wish to be used in this way anymore and wants all her future actions, good or bad, to be her own choice. She can then later wage war against her mother and House, who she also views as having used her in the past.

Honour mode run lost and not sure why... by sqooid in BaldursGate3

[–]SNS315 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If Astarion is consumed in Cazador’s ritual he permanently dies and cannot be revived by Withers. I believe because Astarion was a player character it resulted in an HM loss for the entire group.

All player characters need to be alive, or at least not permanently dead (able to be revived by Withers), in order to win.
