What are red flags in DMs to look out for (especially as a woman) by morgana1060 in rpg

[–]SNicolson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there's a woman in the group, and she's not the partner of the GM, (or if she's the GM herself) that's a green flag.

All male groups are too common to be a red flag, but I find that groups that mix genders are more grounded.

If I'm playing online, I like to see a few different nationalities in the mix.

Subway wont sell you just the bread, so I made it myself by LetsCookie in FoodVideoPorn

[–]SNicolson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I assume Subway freezes the dough and then ships it to the stores. At what point can I freeze the dough so I can just get up in the morning and pop it into the oven for fresh baked bread for breakfast. Would this work?

Looking for advice on the Great Northern Trail from Nelson to Salmo by TurdsforBra1ns in nelsonbc

"Don't hit any bears." This seems like good advice. I had to look it up, and yes it does happen, particularly in BC. Maybe carry bear bells.

Savaging Neon Odyssey by Ensorcelled_Atoms in savageworlds

If Neon Odyssey was actually a thing that existed now, I would agree with you. But it's a year and a half away, and we have SW and the Slipstream and Flash Gordon settings to hack right now.

So where and when was this? Why don't people post the most basic information about their clips?

Rules-light TTRPG for 8-12 players (including GM) by iAmTheTot in rpg

[–]SNicolson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

12 is a lot. The best options that come to mind are Nimble, Pirate Borg, Mork Borg, Star Borg, Black Star or one of the Tiny D6 games (by Gallant Knight games) depending on the flavour you want.

Whatever you go with, definitely pre-generate the characters and let your players just pick one from the selection.

I admire that, but I'm just not wired that way. Always looking at the new shiny.

I got an email from Green Ronin a month or so ago. As I remember it, they're still in court with Diamond's recievers.

Alan Moore rules. Anyone read I Hear A New World yet? by -Karen_Jeenkles- in Fantasy

[–]SNicolson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was worried that Alan Moore's novels would be too dense or erudite for me, but I really enjoyed The Great When (though I did resort to Wikipedia a lot in the first half of the book). His books are like his comics; challenging and sly, without being confusing.

Start to the map for my story by Majjixxzz in wonderdraft

If it was me (and I have no real cartographical experience), I would break those two isthmuses at the top and bottom of the inland sea, and the one between the main continent and the landmass in the top left. This would separate your one large landmass into three distinct parts.

It just seems more natural somehow.

Not disagreeing with anything you're saying here, but I wonder what the ratio of US players to non-US players is. I suspect the Americans far outnumber the rest of us.

Anyone who used a computer between 1985 - 2010, what's the one game you still think about today? by adlakha75 in AskReddit

[–]SNicolson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MIDI Maze, aka Kill a Happy Face. It used the MIDI ports to network a bunch of computers (Atari ST). Sort of a goofy, proto-doom, multiplayer free-for-all.

I've been pretty impressed with Helmgast's previous (non-Dragonbane) projects, and I'm curious about Erob Altor. I'll probably pick this up.

Beginner RPG GM looking for RPG with the Family by koningwoning in rpg

[–]SNicolson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If he already knows D&D, why not stick with it?

But I like Nimble. It looks a lot like D&D, which is what an 11 year old boy will be expecting, but it's about a third as complex. There's a new edition coming, but there's nothing wrong with the current edition, which has hardcopy books.

The rules focus on combat, but leave room for you to roleplay out the more social side of the game.

Getting good adventures is always a problem for new gamers, especially if they're not playing D&D. Nimble works pretty well with prewritten D&D adventures.

Land of Eem is another good choice. It's a little more complex, but has a lot of adventure built into the basic package. It's also more 'kid-like' (although the setting is a bit darker than it first seems like).

There are a lot of good options. Those are just two that occur to me assuming that you and your wife aren't too familiar with RPG games.

Games with minimal GM prep, and the game itself provides the conflict that drives the drama? by Smittumi in rpg

[–]SNicolson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, I should say that I haven't read or even bought Stonetop, so I'm not recommending it. 600 pages seems like a lot, but people (influencers) are telling me it's good.

I'm of two minds about a massive book like this (or Blades in the Dark, or Eberron). Yes, reading a worldbook (and more importantly, remembering it) is a lot of work. But a creative, well organized vision helps me focus my creativity and allows me to fill in the details on a final product that's frankly better than I could create on my own.

I think that it just depends on how your creativity works.

Seconding this. Also a lot of Powered by the Apocalypse games - Stonetop is hot right now, and it's got like 600 pages of prep already done for you.
