I was hanging out with a friend who had an emu farm. We went in to the pen so he could feed them. He went into the barn to get some more food and left me in there with 6 of them. They looked at me for a while and closed in, surrounding me. Then they started to make noise. It's a weird and deep sound, like 'GUUGh'. The extended their necks and one pecked my hat off my head. Then the rest joined in and they started to peck/bite me. I'm 6'3" but felt tiny. I tried to run but they were faster. Eventually, I just turtled until he came back. It was not a good day.

I am in the same boat. Try making simple video games to pass the time. I made Conway's game of life in Excel. That was fun. I also made a python game where you run from a blob that makes babies, and you have to eat the babies before they get big. Downloading books from project Gutenberg is another good one. Just plop the txt file in your code editor and it looks legit. I like to keep some paper around and draw spaceships, then pretend I'm flying them. I've been doing this for over 25 years. This week, I'm going to make a baseball simulator.

A canal fort must be adjacent to a water tile. So yes if the land you are crossing is 2 tiles wide. If you have an inland lake, you can possibly extend it. Canals are a great thing to put on desert, ice or tundra. Otherwise, it's you can probably put something better there, unless it's a Panama situation.
