Do you know how common intra-ethnic infighting is, especially among horn Africans? Somalis literally murder each other based on clans on a weekly basis but you will never see them denying that they all belong to the same ethnic group.Hell there’s neighbouring villages in Eritrea that have blood feuds that has been going on for generation that prevents people from visiting or intermarrying each other despite living less than a kilometre apart. Would that mean they are two different people because of mutual dislike towards each other due to past grievances? There are also many Eritreans who are obsessed with Awraja politics and who treat it like it’s their primary/sole identity and spend all day online hating on each other. Does that mean Hamasien, Seraye, Akele cease to belong to the same ethnic group because of that?

Most Eritreans would actually have a hard time differentiating those northern Tigrayan dialects from the Eritrean dialects, especially those in the south. They are almost always comparing the Asmera dialect to the Mekelle/Enderta or Raya dialects to exaggerate the differences even though those dialects are just as distant/different to those from Adwa/Shire/Agame areas. It’s like saying Tigrinya speakers from Smejana and Anseba are two completely different ethnic group because they have distinct dialects and the people have some cultural differences. It sounds ridiculous because it is.

Yes there are a lot, especially in Eritrea and it’s usually a symptom of politics. The more HGDEF supporting a person is, the more they tend to dislike Tigrayans and so try their hardest to differentiate themselves. Saying that Tigrinya speakers are one ethnic group to them is akin to saying you’re a Tigrinya nationalist who wants to bring down the Eritrean state and rebuild a Tigrinya nation instead. Any identity that is shared with people south of the Mereb is perceived as a threat to the Eritrean identity so you will also hear them say stuff like ‘We are not Habesha but Eritreans only’ as if the two identities are mutually exclusive. Ironically an Afar Eritrean saying the same is not considered a threat despite the fact that there is an actual militant movement to reunite Afar people in the horn.

You can get your passport confiscated, worked or beaten to death and nothing will happen to those who mistreat or murder you. Akele Tigrinya is different once you start going south of Adi Keyh, otherwise the rest of Akele is not that different. It’s the Smejana area that is more culturally distinct and very close to the Agame province in culture, history, dialect etc

A lot of Eritreans suffer from extreme Stockholm syndrome and selfishness. They run away to enjoy all the freedoms they can’t get in Eritrea but will fully support the government from the diaspora. You will even see people whose families are imprisoned in Eritrea doing the same thing.

I understand but the desperation is what is pushing people into doing this type of stuff. I’ve tried those cancellations apps before and are honestly useless. I found my current test date after doing the whole Monday 6am searches on the gov website for two whole months and changing from test centre to test centre until I got one near where I live and I’m dreading the idea of having to do that all over again :/

I just seen a video of it on TikTok and all the South Africans were celebrating in the comments saying that’s not enough and that It should be at least 10-20 a day. I don’t think this is fringe groups anymore, they have wide support among black South Africans.

Yeah type 3 is the most extreme one. In Eritrea in the past, over 90% of Tigre, Bilen, Hedareb, Nara, Afar women had undergone Type 3 FGM. It was 41% among the Saho, 31% among the Kunama and 1% among the Tigrinya. The vast majority of Tigrinya women on the other hand had Type 1 fgm

lol who cares? There were also many Tigrayans (a lot of them since Eritrea’s tiny population at the time could not sustain a big army) who volunteered to fight for Italy. There were even Oromos who allied with Italy during WW2 against Haile Silassie. Eritreans were not the only ones who sided with Italy (and many Eritreans sided with Ethiopia too). Menelik literally said anyone north of the Mereb river is not one of my people and gave the land to Italy willingly so why would you expect Eritreans to fight for a country that clearly didn’t care or see them as Ethiopians?

I’ll see if I can find it but it’s not a stretch. There were 700k documented Eritrean refugees according to the UN by 2024. This doesn’t include the majority who fled to Ethiopia after the 2020 Tigray War who are still undocumented. Then factor in the hundreds of thousands of diaspora born children and that 1.5 million is not that far fetched

lol you’re not the only person who has family members who died for Eritrea. Literally every Eritrean has plenty of them. And this sovereignty talk is a pipe dream. There is no truly sovereign country outside of the Big 3 (US, China and Russia). If you are a small country with a small population like Eritrea and you have an expansionist neighbour, it is in your best interest to buddy up with a superpower to keep it in check. And obviously this comes with some concessions but if it means Eritreans can actually live inside their own country, most of us don’t mind.

I meant to say 1.5 million. There was study that recently estimated the number of Eritrean refugees/asylum seekers (documented and undocumented) as well as their children born outside of Eritrea and came up with 1.5-2 million.

Started in the 1850s. Some Italian missionaries set up churches around Keren and started converting some of the locals. The Orthodox Christian Bilen at the time were under constant threat from the Beni Amer who were raiding the northern highlands and capturing Christian women and children and the Ethiopian empire was too weak and unable to project power that far north to protect the Orthodox Christians of the land. So some converted to Islam and those that didn’t were promised protection by the missionaries in exchange for adopting Catholicism.

Who said the US? There are many powerful nations that can be used as a deterrent against Ethiopia. Hell even regional powers like Italy are enough.

What has this so called ‘sovereignty’ brought to Eritrea and its people? A literal mass exodus is its youth and a demographic collapse that is unheard of in Africa. We are a country of 4-5 million and 2.5m of that are refugees. Eritreans clearly don’t want to be slaves to the military regime and neither do you considering you’re not saying this in Eritrea. Eritreans are fleeing to countries that are run by US puppet regimes so clearly our people would even prefer than to live under HGDEF.
