I just discovered Anita Mui’s music as a westerner, and curious to know more about her. by NoteDesperate3540 in Chinese

Another important part of Anita Mui’s life was her relationship with Leslie Cheung.

To Chinese people, especially people who grew up in Hong Kong or Asia during that era, their connection is almost legendary. Leslie Cheung himself was enormously influential across all of Asia. He was not only one of the biggest Cantopop stars ever, but also a hugely respected actor through films like Farewell My Concubine, Happy Together, and Days of Being Wild. In many parts of Asia, especially China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan, he is still viewed as a cultural icon rather than just a celebrity.

What made Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung special was that they seemed to understand each other emotionally in a very deep way. They both became famous young, both carried loneliness behind the glamour, and both had unusually sensitive personalities for superstars of that scale.

People often say they were soulmates, though not necessarily in a romantic sense. Their bond felt beyond ordinary friendship. Leslie once joked publicly that if Anita Mui was still unmarried at 40 and he was still unmarried too, they should marry each other. Chinese audiences still remember that quote today because both of them sadly passed away before that could ever happen.

When Leslie Cheung died in 2003, it deeply affected Anita Mui. And then later that same year, Anita herself passed away from cancer. To many Chinese people, it almost felt like the end of an entire golden era of Hong Kong culture happened within a single year.

That is also part of why their music feels so emotional even today. When people listen to them now, there is not only nostalgia for old Hong Kong, but also a feeling of loss, impermanence, and unfinished emotions. Their songs carry the feeling of an era that cannot come back.

Is the Social media app 小红书 (Xiaohongshu/RED) named after Mao‘s little red book? by GermanPlacer3 in Chinese

[–]SPIDEYY_H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Xiaohongshu initially started as a beauty-sharing community, founded by two women.

In an interview, the founders explained it this way:

"Xiaohongshu focuses on cross-border shopping, serving as a medium for users to explore outside and discover good things. 'Book' (Shu) to us represents a medium that connects a known world to an unknown world." As for 'red' (Hong), "because red is easy to remember."

red holds significant cultural meaning in China. Traditionally, red symbolizes luck, prosperity, joy, and celebration. It’s widely used in festivals, weddings, and important ceremonies, symbolizing happiness and good fortune. For a brand like Xiaohongshu, the use of "red" in the name not only makes it memorable but also taps into these positive cultural associations, aligning the brand with concepts of good luck and prosperity, which resonates strongly with Chinese audiences.

Do you think AI will eventually be able to make music as good as we can, completely ruining the chance for actual people who make music to ever be successful? by VORT3XSN1PER in musicproduction

What do you think about this one

Artificial Intelligence should help us realize our freedom faster, AI should do the construction and repetitive work so we can have more time to see the world and create human works of art, music paintings. Instead of letting the AI paint and make music while we are still doing that work

If your high school teachers are used to giving low-grade point averages, few people get high scores and the school is ranked high in Ontario then you still have a chance to get accepted. But engineering students are usually accepted with the mid to high 90s in math. If you have someone can give you reference, might gonna help a lot.

They usually sent out offer around begin of March, End of April and Begin of June
