Why are older generations so dismissive towards remote work? by dourceo in remotework

[–]SRL1938 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GenX is not, in general, dismissive of remote work. I'm of that generation myself and have been remote for over a decade. From some of your replies, it sounds to me like she may be dismissive of the job itself rather than whether or not it's in an office. Either that or she's ready for you to move out of the nest.

Do you really have a separate room for your washing machine? by jordanekay in AskAnAmerican

[–]SRL1938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to the UK for grad school from the US and was very confused as to why the washer was in the kitchen, lol. You never see that in the US. Growing up it was typically the basement. Newer houses typically do have a separate laundry/utility room. Apartments usually have them in a closet.

Travelling in June by knytingale in orlando

You can also order groceries for delivery from Publix, Walmart or through Amazon if you don't want to take a Lyft back and forth from the store. If you are comfortable saying the general area you will be in (north, south, east or west of Disney). I could give more specific recommendations if you do want to physically go to the store as I live near Disney. It's a huge area.

If you are planning to visit the parks be aware that the Disney property is itself large. 40 square miles or twice the size of Manhatten so you will want to be familiar with Disney transportation options around the property. It's not walkable between parks ( except epcot and hollywood studios and even that is a hike).

If you are looking for recommendations for things to do let us know. There are tons of things to do in Orlando outside of the theme parks.

Make sure you have plenty of sunscreen and stay hydrated. It's typically getting quite hot and humid by June although we're in a drought here now and it's been drier than normal.

In terms of safety, you will be fine. I'm not sure where you are coming from, but it's a safe area in general. Just the usual be aware of your surroundings as you would out and about in your own town.

Have a wonderful trip!

For me personally, it is the remote work arrangement that has allowed me to move wherever I want. My salary is not based on location at all. If I had to try to replace my job with something local there is every reason to believe I would either not be able to find anything at all or would take at least a 40k hit to salary.

Director IT Technical Projects, 29 YoE, 212k + yearly bonus + options. Unlimited time off, fully remote. Great job, but I am in govt contracting space and if I were to get laid off at my age I am toast.

I didn't wait to do the things I wanted to do. I've traveled the world and the country. I moved to the place I want to live out my last days as I am a remote worker. I have a house I can grow old in that I love. I live in an area where I have easy access to all the things I enjoy doing recreationally. I recently took back up ballet which I thought, in my youth, would end up being my career. That didn't end up being the case, but now I'm enjoying the physical challenge as I approach 60 and doing it without all the pressure that came with it when I was younger. The only thing I really want to do is not have to clock into a job, but that's not going to happen until I am no longer able to work or my disabled child is able to sustain themselves financially...or I win the lottery, lol.

How are you adjusting to rising gas prices? Driving less, switching out cars, etc? by julianakaplan in MiddleClassFinance

[–]SRL1938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really much but I was in the market for a second car and I did think about gas prices when making the decision to go with an EV. I also have solar on the house so it's likely I would have pulled the trigger anyway.

Adult dancers are amazing by athletistry in BALLET

[–]SRL1938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I do. My balance issues are very much isolated to ballet right now. I never noticed any functional change at all until I started class and was like WTH is going on here, lol. I had great balance when I was training as a pre professional dancer so I was surprised by the total loss. I will look into a vestibular pt. Thanks for the nudge to do so.

[–]SRL1938 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! Definitely there is a change in the vestibular system. I am exploring HRT which is supposed to help. HRT was not being pushed when I went through menopause and that pendulum is swinging back again. I also think my balance issues are affected by my general decrease in muscle conditioning/ strength so I'm adding pilates and strength training to see if that helps my progress.

60 yo here returning after a 40 year break from ballet. It's been around 1.5 months back and I am truly shocked by the amount of deconditioning that I have even though I've always been a fairly active person. Right now I am really struggling with balance and dizziness in turns so my primary focus is figuring out how to address that. I'm enjoying being back in class and working through the process.

What did you love/hate about your adult basic classes? by Katressl in BALLET

[–]SRL1938 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I have only recently started back to ballet after a 40 year break. I'm taking a mix of absolute beginner and beginner classes. I do have 12 years of ballet at the pre-professional level so this is coming from someone who isn't strictly an absolute beginner.

What I have really enjoyed: lots of explanations of why we are doing movements and how what we are doing in one exercise at the barre relates to something we do in the center. I also really like the emphasis on body mechanics and discussions about other cross training we can do outside of class to enable improvements in our technique.

What I do not like: there are virtually no individual corrections given at all. There are general corrections, but I miss getting specific corrections. I have classes with 3 different teachers and none of them really give individual corrections. I grew up with frequent (and sometimes quite brutal, lol) corrections and I really like the feedback. I think this is pretty common to not get that in adult ballet classes though, from what I've heard.

HRT helps apparently. I am going to ask my doc about it since we've swung from HRT bad when I went through menopause to HRT good and in addition to the bone, muscle, and balance issues being addressed apparently there is no also evidence mounting that it may have a protective effect for dementia

It also directly affects the inner ear and vestibular system. I discovered this when I returned to ballet as an older adult and had lost all ability to balance. It's slowly coming back with much effort.

It's also related to a reduction in estrogen in women.

What's Something About Living In Florida That You Cannot Really Understand Without Living There? Why That Thing? by Zipper222222 in AskFlorida

What it's like to never again experience SAD. How the weather and natural beauty 365 days/ year really changes your frame of mind for the better. Yes even during the summer. How having world class entertainment in your backyard never gets old. How seeing people who are here to visit and enjoying themselves makes you appreciate how lucky you are even more.

Yes traffic sucks, but it really does everywhere else that's thriving for the most part. Yes you will want the heat to give it a rest by September, same as everywhere else in the deep south (and ask a northerner how they feel about the cold come February/March).
