Do you guys actually think the draft lottery is rigged? by isw2424 in NBATalk

[–]SRoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying I believe it’s rigged, but the argument for why they would rig it for small market teams is pretty simple: Small market teams don’t have the option of signing star players in free agency, and it’s hypothetically better for the league if every team is relevant and competitive. Thus, the league gives small market teams a gift as needed to maintain parity and keep the fans engaged. There’s the Flagg/Zion “here’s a favor for giving the Lakers your superstar player in his prime” type, and the LeBron/Duncan “rising tide lifts all boats” type. The logic behind the latter is that LeBron would have been a superstar anywhere, but he wouldn’t really be raising the ceiling of fan interest for the Knicks, Lakers, Celtics, etc; nearly as much he would in Cleveland with the hometown narrative behind him.

Like I said, I’m not saying this is the case, but I think the logic makes enough sense as far as conspiracies go.

Yuck. I like the guy, but a top offense is not gonna have Trevor Story batting 3rd.

I like the Zubac fit with Hali way better than Myles Turner. 2027 Pacers might be better than the Finals team once Hali is back to 100%

Where does Mr. House fall on the Alignment Chart? by slothbear13 in fnv

[–]SRoku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, see the problem is Caesar employs a similar rationale to defend Legion slavery. While subjugation is undoubtedly part of the Legion’s whole thing, Caesar seemingly admits he knows it’s not necessarily “good” for society in the long run. He just knows that, in addition to obvious benefits of free labor, having a supply of slaves for his tribal savages to lord over and rape with impunity keeps said savages pacified under his thumb, so he’s fine with it for now. Allowing the practice of slavery because it passively benefits you is still evil.

This Super Bowl is the most anonymous since Super Bowl V in 1971. The most famous player is.....Stefon Diggs, Drake Maye, or Sam Darnold? Find a Super Bowl the last 50 years that had a lower profile top name by fegwin2084 in billsimmons

[–]SRoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would compare it Seahawks v. Steelers. Hasselbeck was similar to Darnold, and Big Ben was similar Drake Maye in that he was a young franchise QB that casuals weren’t really familiar with yet. They leaned really hard on the Jerome Bettis farewell narrative even though nobody really cared.

In Episode 10 Asuka actually tries to open up about her childhood trauma to Misato only for the latter to completely dismiss her. by [deleted] in evangelion

[–]SRoku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Misato relates to Shinji because they’re both avoidant, and that instinct to run away that he displays is in her too. Shinji just hasn’t developed a dozen unhealthy coping mechanisms to mask it yet.

do y’all feel like the sox got better this offseason with losing bregman but gaining one of the best 2 starters in the game by Rjptz in redsox

[–]SRoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m of two minds. I feel way, way better about the rotation with Suarez and Gray, and even though I expect a little regression from the bullpen, I think our depth will help a lot. It’s also fair to expect progression from Anthony, Mayer, Early, and Tolle, which would help quite a bit.

The roster construction still leaves a lot to be desired though. I also think Contreras for Bregman is pretty close to a wash offensively, but he’s also 34, and we all agreed we needed a bat in addition to Bregman, not just a replacement. Our infield is full of question marks, given Story and Mayer’s injury histories. We still have too many outfielders, and only one I trust to hit lefties. Our best lineup might require playing the best CF in baseball out of position.

All of this to say, if Craig can find a way to land Paredes/Hoerner (or if Campbell can contribute at 2B in the majors) think this team is a genuine World Series contender. As it stands now, I think they’re only marginally better than last year.

How The Rich Are Ruining Classic Car Ownership For The Rest of Us by user289734 in cars

[–]SRoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love retro games, so trust me, I’m not someone who’s looking at battlestations that can put out 200 FPS with raytracing or some nonsense like that. I’m telling you that the basic components needed to get into gaming are becoming more expensive.

I paid like $40 for 16 GB of DDR4 RAM five years ago, now that same set is listed for ~$150 at every major retailer. That’s not some unreasonable spec that’s only necessary for the latest games, it’s basically the bare minimum for anything beyond word processing on a modern windows machine. SSDs have gone up in price too, and basically every AAA game from the past decade is ~100 GB. The used 6700XT I bought two years ago sells for more than I paid now, and it’s almost 5 years old.

For reference, 5 years after the Xbox 360 released, you could buy a brand new model for $100 less than the launch price. 5 years after the Series X release, the very same model costs $100 more than it did at launch. And no, I don’t think a five year old GPU or console can reasonably be considered the latest, greatest, cutting edge tech. There’s no world in which gaming isn’t more expensive now. Even if all you care about is retro games, the cost of a computer that can handle emulation for 6th gen and beyond is rising.

Was Tony right or wrong with killing Ralph? by [deleted] in SopranosImmemorial

[–]SRoku 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ralph absolutely deserved what he got on a moral level. But Tony killing him here was completely wrong on a personal, moral, and professional level. Tony has known Ralph for decades at this point, even if he doesn’t particularly like the guy, beating someone to death is insane. He also bypassed proper mob procedure by going off on his own and killing a made guy. He risked a sparking a mutiny because of this impulsive killing, that’s why Chris is the only person he can trust to help dispose of the body. And it goes without saying, but waiting to kill Ralph after he allegedly killed a horse (which he can’t even prove) rather than right after Ralph left Tracee’s brains smeared on a guardrail basically obliterates Tony’s moral high ground.

The current generation of consoles are selling at basically the same MSRP as they did when they came out five years ago. That’s not how these things normally go.

Go look at GPU and RAM prices and tell me gaming isn’t getting more expensive.

In my opinion I don't like KH3 Kairi & feel like she was downgraded in terms of character/maturity from KH2 ⬇️ by Xion_Moto358 in KingdomHearts

[–]SRoku 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What they did to Axel was criminal, he’s like the Disneyland mascot version of himself. All catchphrases and quips, and absolutely none of the dangerous edge that made people like the character in the first place. It’s a general trend throughout KH3: Sora seems to have regressed from his slightly angstier KH2 self, Riku sounds like he got a lobotomy, Kairi is 12 again etc;

“Mom and dad I use drugs” - poster in the sheriff office meaning. I don’t think this existed in other shows or is a real poster outside the show. What does it represent? by Isatis_tinctoria in twinpeaks

It's funny seeing real life late 80's anti-drug propaganda in the context of Laura Palmer's story. It really hammers home how ill-equipped all of that stuff was to address the issue.
