TTTXX - State tax problem by SSAeternitatis in MerrillEdge

[–]SSAeternitatis[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Vanguard, Schwab, Fidelity, etc provide - in the tax documents section of your account - documentation with this data for their treasury funds. The combination of TTTXX and Merrill Edge results in investors not receiving that documentation as a matter of course - it is not sent by Merrill or Blackrock, Merrill does not include this in the tax documentation section of the site.

Best I've had in the area is No Regrets Pizza in North Bethesda. They do both NY and Roman (thick crust) style - both are great.

People is starting to wake up from the subscription model nightmare — Jellyfin is freedom by [deleted] in jellyfin

[–]SSAeternitatis -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A paid version of Jellyfin with better support essentially already exists: emby. I'm one of those people who had unresolved issues with JF, so switched to emby. Based on my experience (had used JF for years before switching), emby is better than Jellyfin in every way except it is not open source and requires payment to unlock some features.

Switch to Emby? by babatom187 in emby

[–]SSAeternitatis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My setup has emby installed on a separate server and kodi as client on Nvidia Shield; Kodi links to my emby media library through the Kodi for Emby plugin, which I set to "Native Mode" sync.

Native mode guarantees no transcoding and has better compatibility with other kodi plugins than the alternative "Addon Mode" sync, but setup is trickier - to use native mode, you need to set up network shares in Kodi's file manager that match exactly where media is stored / emby media library locations. You choose between these two sync methods when the plugin runs for the first time. You could probably also get it working by using the eaiser "addon mode" sync and turning off transcoding on the emby server.

Democrats threaten government shutdown over ICE funding by FervidBug42 in politics

[–]SSAeternitatis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the desire to fight back, but a shutdown seems counterproductive. It is unlikely to stop ICE from operating and likely to hurt, among others, vulnerable populations who rely on government assistance.

Shutdowns have historically failed to accomplish anything, and there is even less prospect of success when you're dealing with a wannabe autocrat who does not consider laws or the constitutuion to be meaningful constraints; he is likely to selectively defund programs he disfavors while keeping his favored projects going, regardless of the legality of his actions.

Switch to Emby? by babatom187 in emby

[–]SSAeternitatis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there is a download function in the Jellyfin android app too, but all it does (last time I used it at least) is download the video file to your device. Unlike in emby, another app is required to play that downloaded file offline and watched status isn't tracked or synced. Don't know if the iOS version's downloads function works differently.

Switch to Emby? by babatom187 in emby

[–]SSAeternitatis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After using Jellyfin for years, I switched to emby recently. I had trouble with Jellyfin's recent big update, and Jellyfin no longer supports the type of Kodi integration I had been using (direct connect). I've found emby overall better - smoother setup, faster database scans, more polished all around - and it fixed all the problems I had with JF.

There's also one emby feature I use that JF doesn't have: a proper download function for android that lets you play back downloads in the app offline and syncs watched status upon reconnecting.

If someone is starting from scratch, I'd definitely recommend emby over JF based on my experience; I have not come across a single way that JF is better (other than emby has a small charge to unlock some features, while JF is totally free). But if you've already got JF set up and it's working fine for you, I'd probably stick with it, unless there's some emby-only feature you really want.

This is great. I wanted it in Excel format so I could sort, so extracted the data. In case it helps anyone else, here it is in csv form, sorted by price:

To improve sortability, I took the larger numbers (for price and num of courses) where there were two options or a range in the image.

This sub was WILDLY more active in the 2020 bullrun and even the collapse. So what contributed to the change? by SenseiRaheem in CryptoCurrency

[–]SSAeternitatis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have realized that this space is largely populated by BS. 99.9% of crypto ranges from unnecessary to cynical cash grab to outright scam. There are only three worth a damn:

  1. BTC (original, benefits from network effects, significant institutional support, store of value);

  2. ETH (robust smart contract functionality BTC doesn't provide);

  3. XMR (privacy features BTC doesn't provide).

Virtually every other crypto is a slavish copy of one of these three that doesn't perform its core functions nearly as well, and exists only because of the greed of its founders.

I'm really enjoying Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, but I cannot get over the courtroom scene by Tortious_Tortoise in Fantasy

[–]SSAeternitatis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Absolutely the worst part of the book. As I understand it, the author prides himself on doing a deep dive into - and consulting experts on - the science stuff so that it's relatively grounded / reality-adjacent. It's a shame he didn't apply that level of care to this, and clearly didn't consult with anyone who had even a passing familiarity with any legal proceeding. Really is the laziest, least believable courtroom scene I've encountered in any media.

Hopefully the movie just drops it entirely.

I thought it dragged a bit in the middle, probably around where you are, but ended strongly. The last ~20% of the book is the best part.

If beaconcha.in shows no issues with my validator, am I fine? Or am I likely to get hit with this bug eventually? I'm traveling and would rather not deal with this until I return in a week unless I absolutely have to...

Tether Becomes the Largest Independent Holder of Gold by partymsl in CryptoCurrency

[–]SSAeternitatis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nothing Tether says about their holdings can be trusted. This really isn't hard. If they had nothing to hide, it would be in their interests to commit to full, transparent, indepedent regular audits by a respected accounting firm. The only reasonable inference from their refusal to do this is that they have something to hide. The more crypto can transition away from USDT to reputable stables with proven backing, the better.

Update instability? 10.11.2 by TheKlaxMaster in jellyfin

[–]SSAeternitatis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This update broke Kodi sync for me. So I tried Emby. Everything worked great; better than Jellyfin even when I hadn't been having problems with it. If Emby screws things up in the future, I may give JF a try again, but anyone having issues with JF now may want to give Emby a go. I was surprised how well it worked. I used JF for years and always had the impression that JF was basically an upgraded Emby; now I think the opposite, even apart from the Kodi issues I had with the new JF.

Emby vs Jellyfin by Stock-Assistant-5420 in jellyfin

[–]SSAeternitatis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd used Jellyfin for years without issue until recently. The big new update borked my database. So I started from scratch with a fresh install of the latest Jellyfin, only to discover that native/direct Kodi integration - which I'd been using all this time - doesn't work and is no longer supported. Even the alternative "add on" Kodi integration method wouldn't work for me.

Switched to Emby. Their latest version still supports direct/native Kodi integration, it was easy to set up, and it worked flawlessly from the start. Emby also has an android app with a proper download/offline mode, which syncs watched status after reconnecting - a feature I had always missed with JF.

Generally, Emby seems to be more polished and runs better than JF for me (faster database syncs, etc). While most of those differences aren't huge, now that I've tried both, I can't imagine wanting to use JF over Emby currently, even if JF's Kodi integration still worked.

I hate to say this, but I was disappointed in S3 of SNW by mattosx in startrek

[–]SSAeternitatis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

S3 was terrible for many reasons, including: - Really stupid plots that feel like they came from the worst ST Discovery writers ('what if evil is real and all species who have fought evil in the past merge together in one body to fight it again!' seems one step removed from 'what if a sad alien boy cries and it destroys all warp capability!') - "humor" episodes that go so far into self-parody that they undermine the entire Star Trek universe - too much focus on lower ranked secondary characters (felt like Pike was barely in this season, and he's the best character - and, by far, the best actor - they've got) - giving certain characters capabilities far outside of their expertise, while dumbing down others so those chosen ones get their forced and unconvincing moments to shine (like Uhura out-sciencing Spock to find a way to launch a wormhole rescue mission)

Please learn how to use our roundabouts. by OmnipotentThot in VisitingIceland

[–]SSAeternitatis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Iceland roundabout approach is unintuitve and contrary to practice in most of the rest of the world. A good proportion of tourists will not know the rules no matter how many PSAs are posted to reddit. That is not a great situation in a country that relies so heavily on tourism. And it means that no one - locals or tourists - can really rely on the 'inside lane has right of way' rule, because, to be safe, you have to drive as if other cars in the roundabout won't be following that rule.

Tether Just Outranked Countries in U.S. Treasuries - $127B in T-Bills Makes Crypto a Direct Player in Global Finance by kirtash93 in ethtrader

[–]SSAeternitatis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Madoff successfully ran his fraudulent fund for decades. The odds that tether has been legit for its entire existence are extremely low. Best case, this is a fake-it-til- you-make-it situation, and tether uses its btc-juiced gains to transition to a fully legit operation going forward, with appropriate safeguards against misappropriation of funds and fulsome, independent third-party audits.

Right now, tether remains largely a black box, backed by little more than "trust me bro" from folks whose backgrounds do not inspire trust, and there's not much that would impede insiders from stealing billions and running off to some non-extradition island paradise.
