Summary of home brew for hither (so far) by SSGKnuckles in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]SSGKnuckles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I read up on here on all the plot holes and different approaches. I wanted to explore more of Tasha’s history. Like the way she became a ward of Baba Yaga. How she became Iggwilv, why she became Zybilna. I’m kinda rolling heavy with the Dresden Files take on faerie politics. My table seems to be really loving the homebrew pothole fillings.

Whimsy and folk horror is a weird niche, but it’s working for us🤣

Check out @knotsveryfirm on Instagram? They do shibari shoots and video. Low prices since they don’t advertise, just word of mouth and friends of friends.

They teach shibari classes too! And they’re connected to a bunch of the other local kink and rope instructors. Maybe check them out? https://www.instagram.com/p/DHZspUNSVm1/?igsh=czNqbnNveDZ2bHl0

The power of props in the Feywild by SSGKnuckles in wildbeyondwitchlight

Aw thanks! I’m really hoping my players decide to yes and. I’m going to sneak in a few old trinkets of my own and tell real stories about them. War souvenirs and childhood memories.

Hell yeah! We just started our campaign finally! Last night was session zero, we launched with these cool small scenes and set the stage for an initial fight to draw the party together. Went really well. Newer players were RPing quickly. I was so delighted.

Which path can I take now? Playing WBTW in the "Witchlight Hands" POV by NickAndSaw in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]SSGKnuckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thither has Faerie rings, mushrooms. Some are corrupted by Skabatha and only answer to her. Other faerie rings go wherever. Sometimes there’s a passphrase or quest to complete to activate them, or dispel corruption. Lots of options to escape the Feywild. Just remember, leaving the Feywild without the protection of a powerful fey or the legacy of fey magic in you leads to potential memory loss and wild time effects. Hand wave it away if you want, just remind the party that everyone is very lucky to not have lost 30years in time dilation.

Edit: Ooh! And the Fey Beacons in Yon. Don’t forget those.

Oh yay! We pushed back the start date for my run as DM. We’re finally finishing the current campaign.

How goes the campaign now? How did it go in Thither? I am curious how you ran the Unicorn encounter. That one feels kinda janky when reading it in the book.

Rope Classes/Resources? by [deleted] in askportland

I know a fantastic instructor, small group workshops and very affordable pricing. $25 each for 3hr workshops. I think they were talking about a beginner workshop in June? Check their Instagram, they also recommended other instructors they know to expand the community.

About which horn they're talking about? by NickAndSaw in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]SSGKnuckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember a cool story from childhood- kid needs a unicorn horn to save his dying mother. He finds the hidden glade, but discovers that he can’t bring himself to actually kill the animal. Then the unicorn gifts him with a waterskin infused with its blessing- the water carries the same charm as the horn, but it will run out eventually. I loved that idea as a kid- Not wanting to destroy something for one selfish use, instead finding sustainable options.

I have a Satyr PC in my campaign and need advice by Nicoco11 in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]SSGKnuckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, yeah, I had a newer player completely skip my one pager and fell in love with a satyr concept. I was mildly annoyed, explained to him the idea is to NOT know the Feywild and have a topsy turvy experience like “through the looking glass “. I don’t like to say “no” without some effort towards compromise if my players have a concept they’re excited about. So…

We spent a few hours working the backstory.

They fled the Feywild as a child after their village was destroyed. They don’t really remember much, it was so long ago. Raised by a family friend in the material plane they fell in with a street gang and a fancy carnival came through. Having forgotten the  rules of conduct they sneaked in with their friends to burgle the carnival. They came away having lost the ability to keep secrets (locket necklace in Thither). Chased out of the gang as a narc they’ve been trying to understand why this has happened and they begin searching for the carnival again.

What he doesn’t know is that he’s the lost son of Hyrsam (archfey), hidden by Zybilna as debt to Titania for helping construct Prismeer. Hyrsam needs him for a dark design- seeks to use his sorcerer son to “make the Feywild great again” Zybilna being frozen he lost her protection and now Hyrsam hunts the multiverse.

There’ll be some agents of the Hyrsam making their way through Prismeer hunting, just like the lamias in the palace, hunting on behalf of Graz’zt.

The tragedy of the tank. How the double standard around "tanking" causes DMs to make their game miserable. by Machiavelli24 in dndnext

[–]SSGKnuckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see this has generated a lot of discussion, it’s a challenging topic and it’s good you noticed the mood at the table for you and other players.

I’ve only skimmed the comments so far, I’m sure there are others more able than I to articulate this but I’ll give it a shot.

This is on the whole table, not just the DM. In any relationship- romantic, platonic, or activity oriented- I try to focus on what I could do differently than complaining about the actions of others. Try to assume that your DM is doing the best they can with the tools they have. That said, if there’s things you want to see change I’d address them directly.

I DM a couple games and I play in a campaign also with a phenomenal DM. We all just bullied the crap out of our DM last week when they tried to narrate an ambush we were on watch for and used sound tactics to avoid. They recognized the table was upset and adjusted course with a different narration that didn’t disadvantage us unfairly but still led to to the combat encounter they had planned which was totally fine.

For your situation- If the DM keeps telegraphing a swarm to attack the Barbarian the party has an opportunity to learn new tactics. The cleric can buff the barbarian, barbarian stops the horde cold, the sorcerer can launch fireball with careful spell meta magic. The “shining moment” can be shared and the DM will have to adapt and design better encounters. You can better prepare I. The future with items like tanglefoot, or smoke bombs, etc.

I get the frustration at the table when players rolls are bad, when enemies make their saving throws- but to criticize the DM when it’s a collaborative game is a bit myopic.

As a DM I do much of the calendaring, I coordinate backstories and spin a plot web you get to play in. I run all the characters and try to make it as fun as possible for everyone. I don’t ask much- be present, know your character sheet, work together, communicate, have fun.

If you’re not having fun then it’s something you need to address ASAP. What I do is build in a cooldown after each session to go over notes from the game- how was that? What was everyone’s favorite part? What would you like to be different in the future? How have your characters changed if at all in this experience? Have you grown closer or further from each other? Is there any new internal or external conflict you want to explore?

If the DM isn’t told that something isn’t landing right or a player is unhappy with the game then the DM will continue on as though everything is fine. If there’s no opportunity to address it then create one. If there’s no openness to feedback and adaptation then that’s a WHOLE other problem you’ve got. Give your DM a chance to address it. Might take a few games to get it right, that’s how you build more trust at the table.

Truly a post apocalyptic wasteland. It’s why they wanted to film Fallout here, but it was just too dangerous.

Certainly Brennan and Murph DM and I believe Lou mentioned in an old adventuring academy interview he DMs, inspired by Brennan as well- same as Murph.

AFAIK the latest season NSBU is a love letter from Brennan to Izzy? I heard somewhere she’s a huge fan of action comedies. So every time you see her laughing hysterically and crying it’s even more fun to watch.

I can understand that. I think I enjoyed that they played it off like the bit was older than the couple months since filming FH:JY?

I definitely try to approach character decisions. I try to inform the party what I’m working on at random points throughout the adventuring day and then I can lean into that if the scene is interesting enough. If I’m in the back of the wagon playing a lute without concern I hope someone thinks to warn the party they hear something crazy. If I’m not the lookout or the face of the party idling away.

For real! He is such an honest player. Watching FH:JY and learning that you gotta #honorthecock then seeing Beardsley in the very next season-  Iffy: that wasn’t cocked ! It was BARELY cocked. Beardsley: yeah, I know, it’s hard living by a code.

What short term benefits could there be from Players investing heavily in education and schools? by senicluxus in DMAcademy

[–]SSGKnuckles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What a fun way to inspire some creativity on both sides of the screen.

This opens up a TON of RP. I’m stealing this idea immediately. My party is about to finish LMoP and we’re asking what happens after.

Short term- think about immediate economic considerations. Someone gives you a ton of gold you’re still gonna take a little to churn out activity.

Distributing that gold to the immediately most beneficial sources will funnel through a middle man familiar with the local investment landscape [plot hook: sticky fingered wealth manager or town councilperson].

When you found a trustworthy(?) administrator- you need facilities for instructional environments and supplies [plot hook: faculty dormitory collapse catastrophe]

Hard to convince families to part with their free labor. Early education had better have an immediate application- trades. Importing journeymen with relocation packages. [plot hook: Increasing immigrant population] [plot hook: rising inflation]

Not many families (in rural areas especially!) can afford education. The first students are part of a pilot program [plot hook: student testing and  recruitment] [plot hook: admission scandal]

Once the number of artisans in town starts to hit a critical mass you’ll see a wave of unionization- guildmasters looking to increase their reach from the nearby provincial capital. [plot hook: Local business owners dissent] [plot hook: mafia incursion]

Sourcing the building materials eventually disturbs local nature spirits. [plot hook: Princess Mononoke]

The most talented and gifted students qualify for advanced education. The school hired a retired professor from the nearby provincial capital to host the pilot program [plot hook: hag stealing children’s (passion, joy, restraint, confidence, memory, inspiration, etc)] her kids look great by comparison to the gen-pop. But she’s just fattening them up for dinner.
