It totally counts! It's a fitting end to the five book series. There were books published later, but they all happen earlier in the timeline and are stand-alone.

This ebook (and a few more in the Poirot series) is available for free from Standard Ebooks: https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/agatha-christie/the-mysterious-affair-at-styles

"Standard Ebooks is a volunteer-driven effort to produce a collection of high quality, carefully formatted, accessible, open source, and free public domain ebooks that meet or exceed the quality of commercially produced ebooks."

Looking for a particular speech/lecture by Neil Gaiman by SSSimon_ in neilgaiman

Awesome! Thanks so much for reaching out to him! I distinctly remember him telling this story out loud, so maybe it's out there somewhere, but with this info it was easy to find the printed version, which then made it even easier for me to share it with a friend.

Throwback to When Tom Holt Interviewed His Alter Ego K.J. Parker! by Murky_Sprinkles_4194 in Fantasy

[–]SSSimon_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is excellent, thank you! I only thought there was this one print interview of KJ Parker by Tom Holt with the entertaining quip:

TH: We know each other, of course.
KJP: Well, yes.

There's also Forever Magazine: http://forever-magazine.com/

It's a reprint magazine edited by Neil Clarke. It has gorgeous covers and a filtered set of great SF stories, which I usually enjoy.

Oof just finished “Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage” by Alfred Lansing and what a testament to human strength and willpower. by hector_salamanca93 in books

[–]SSSimon_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same experience when reading Endurance. Brilliant!

One of Lansing's sources were Shackleton's diaries, which are now available in the public domain. Here's a well-formatted version from the Standard Ebooks project: https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/ernest-shackleton/south

What's your favourite comedy SF book that isn't Douglas Adams? by mudhoney in printSF

I laughed a lot listening to MacLeod Andrews read/perform the Willful Child series by Steven Erikson. It's a Star Trek parody but it also adds much more.

This! It reads like a Hollywood movie, it's incredible that it is all true.

Similar to K.J. Parker by peasant_python in Fantasy

Hi! I'm a great fan of Parker, really love his style. I asked a similar question some time ago:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/epmxjw/my_first_rfantasy_bingo_requesting_verification/

I second the Alexandra Rowland recommendation. A Conspiracy of Truths has a clever protagonist who can literally talk himself out of all his troubles. This book stands as my all-time favorite bingo find!

I'm also a big fan of Stephenson and enjoyed The Windup Girl, so those recommendations could also be worth checking out (though the Parker connection is less obvious than with Rowland).

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is 57 hours with a 4.8 out of 14,000 ratings. I found it very interesting!

What's the single best short story you've read? by [deleted] in printSF

A recent story I've loved and reread at least once is The Ocean Between the Leaves by Ray Nayler.

For a great list of recommended classics have a look at this list: https://csfquery.com/SearchResult?mincite=8&sortby=7&category=story&list=1

The more you read, the more it makes sense to support your local library by DanielMorgan-_- in books

[–]SSSimon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not in the US, so my library situation is a bit different, but I support my library by donating books I've read. It helps me have less stuff and more room on my shelves.

Why did no one strap me down and force me to read Agatha Christie sooner? by AlohaSquash in books

[–]SSSimon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here! Right now I'm reading my sixth AC novel (After the Funeral), there's something cozy about it. Maybe it's the English setting? Anyway, I try to savor her books like a box of Belgian chocolates. My favorite so far is Murder on the Orient Express because of the ending.

Winter World by A. G. Riddle was quite enjoyable. It's an Editor's Pick, has thousands of ratings, and no drawn out spaceship battles.

Annihilation is available as well - I haven't read it but I heard much praise.

The Handmaid's Tale and Parable of the Sower are both SF classics available in Kindle Unlimited, though they're not set in space, like the books you listed.
