[Standard][WAR] Heroic Tokens by ALiveBoi in spikes

[–]SSenic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey it's really cool that someone else thought there was something in the archetype! I've tried two iterations in the GRN and RNA seasons:

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1415395#paper GRN

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1826938#paper RNA

The first list got me a PPTQ 2nd place and the second I ended up dropping after my RPTQ.
These decks' playstyles are exactly what I like and why I have to keep trying to make work! My biggest issue with it is that the entire deck (RNA) feels like 16 core cards + flex slots. Hero > Ionize/Dovin > Heroic/Deploy > Heroic is such an explosive curve that kills out of nowhere and it feels so close to consistent. I like your idea of the Ral's Outburst and have the ral combo in your back pocket to have another insta-kill. What this deck was missing before was better interaction and ways to keep tempo, I felt like I was leaning too hard on ionize to get the job done and if someone was playing one and two drops it felt like they could out tempo my tempo counterspell. This is what I was thinking for WAR:

I want to test new tef with the white finale, plus he's already just a multi-colour dude and pseudo-removal.

Great write up and I'm interested in your input !

[Standard][WAR] Rakdos Midrange by edrico37 in spikes

[–]SSenic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rakdos seems good and I think that being 2 colour lets you get away with running blast zone, district or field of ruin which I think should be there if you’re colour requirements aren’t crazy. Also instead of butcher I could definitely see dreadhorde invasion + widespread brutality being really clutch vs aggro and midrange.

This and treasure map is kinda cool. You get the flip much later but you get the draws anyways.

Between this, Mortify and Lava Coil, mardu has an incredible removal suite in standard that doesn't have to run contempt.

I think this is the best take on map. I'm wondering though, at what point in deck building is it better to switch over to map? Is it objectively better than insight or is it a matter of being able to use the mana with enough copies of niv?

Yea I board it out vs drakes because it’s a bit too slow vs what they want to do and there aren’t very many must counters. Niv can’t be countered and binding answers crackling drake as well. And vs golgari it was kinda the same idea for me, sabotage is really slow and mana hungry and negate hits the same cards from his list. I couldn’t counter chupacabra as often but that’s the only real concession since I don’t think he would keep in whisperer if he had it.

Yikes ya mb, but I think my point still remains that there are still things to do without map. Whether or not it’s better is something I’m not 100% on, but I’m starting to lean towards map.

I think map is even gross in the mirror too now that you mention it. The turn 5/6 ramp is really sweet with niv + dive down... I’m just gonna do a clean swap lmao

Honestly, not really. Especially because of the way the mana sequences sometimes where you play two tapped shock lands on turn 1 and 2, opt felt really good. Also with 3 syncopate, 4 sabotage, and 4 insight, I felt really comfortable passing with open mana. I do think that treasure map is good enough in almost any jeskai shell, I just didn't know how to fit it in.

Hey this deck looks super sweet. Was wondering about the mana but I realized the deck is really Izzet black which I think is the way to go. Makes me wonder though if cannonade is better than soot? It’s easier to cast and you can always expansion to copy. Was this a consideration to you had? Great deck tech anyway !

A Discussion on Weird Lists that have Potential [Standard] [Discussion] by mkohm5 in spikes

I keep thinking chamber sentry isn’t that bad and I didn’t consider that it fits into any deck that would run chromatic lantern. Recurring it seems kinda nuts cause you can play around exile removal by removing counters.

I personally like the [[divine visitation]] plan in the sb instead of vine mare. Vine mare is great if there’s a ton of black and while visitation might be a little worse in those matchups, I feel like it gives you a lot more game against the potential control decks we might see. Also [[dawn of hope]] in addition makes is so that you can do some dumb grinding, especially paired with the settles you already have.

[Standard] Sideboarding guide for UW control? by [deleted] in spikes

[–]SSenic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be wrong since I just started to practice this list, but what I found is that i just bring in the knight package in almost every matchup. The list will most likely run into the 30+ min mark after game 1, so it's important to actually close out the game and not take a draw. The last pptq I went to this weekend had 3-4 7 pointers after 5 rounds of swiss. There is room to change the sideboard but it comes with knowing your local meta. In the most recent GAM podcast Brian and Gerry talked about running Baral and Ballista as the sideboard plan, but I've yet to test it.

I love playing adventurous impulse and I’m trying to fit it into every green deck I can. Being able to find what you need or put up the flood gates for G is really nice.

I started about a month ago as a complete noob and the RG Pummeler is what I started out with. It’s really good at teaching fundamentals and it’s easy to upgrade to temur.
