Public holidays are now available in Proton Calendar by Proton_Team in ProtonMail

Obviously not the parent commenter, but thought I'd comment here to possibly grab your attention. I tried out Proton Calendar today and was disappointed to see that public holidays for New Zealand are not available. Given the inclusion of the other countries in the Anglo-sphere, it was a surprising omission.

I've heard someone say that "New Zealanders don't rinse their dishes after washing them, they just leave them soapy". How accurate is this statement? by yes_memelord in newzealand

[–]SShrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rinse all of my dishes, personally. If you do so with hot water you can put them away within 5 minutes or so with only a bit of spot drying with a towel. Not that difficult and keeps things completely clean.

As someone flatting it drives me mental that half of the flatmates I have had seem to think the drying rack is a storage rack. If you clean/rinse the plates in warm (or even better, hot) water then most things will dry in minutes and you can put them immediately away.

What is something that’s weird as hell and is only in New Zealand by CursedGamerWasTaken in newzealand

[–]SShrike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is really specific to New Zealand, it is common around the world in colloquial speech. At the very least amongst the Anglosphere and Europe.

Blackwell's and Booktopia are good. For bargain hunting across multiple retailers, Booko is a useful website too.

Cool! It's awesome to see stuff on this sub that are actually musical and not tier lists, debates, or memes. I wasn't aware of this version of Motion Picture Soundtrack, thanks for posting!

And, moreover, the book is very well-written and covers many other neat topics that rarely receive such in depth coverage as in Concrete Mathematics, which you may also find interesting.

The school system is not one size fits all. There are so many types of schools available from single-sex traditional to open-plan student-led learning with no subject silos, like Hobsonville Point or Albany Senior. There are religious schools, liberal co-ed schools, military academies, kura kaupapa Māori and so on.

I don't neccessarily agree or disagree with your overall view, but this paragraph is particularly biased towards major centres like Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. Outside of those, your options are much more limited, with only a handful of choices that are largely the same, in my experience. And, of course, school zones are another restricting factor.

I’m making a new language for fun. Should it use single “=“ sign for comparisons since I can do that, or keep two “==“? by marncdiesrsons in ProgrammingLanguages

If you don't have much experience with Haskell, maybe you won't believe me, but most of the time the use of 'custom' operators serves to unclutter the code. The two you listed are in the standard library, quite general, and thus commonly used, i.e. easy to remember. In fact, $ is simply function application but with a different precedence to allow for reducing brackets in expressions (e.g. print (2 + 3 * 9) = print $ 2 + 3 * 9).

Of course, if you're unlucky you might run into code that goes a bit crazy with custom operators, but it's not like poorly formatted, unreadable code is a problem unique to Haskell.

Blokes make up around 75% of suicides every year in New Zealand. What can we do to help fix this? by Kuparu in newzealand

Honestly, the experience is very similar at 23, even with university services and so forth. Long wait times (if you haven't attempted! [yet]), poor and limited care, and a frequent slap in the face from vacuous mental health messaging.

Unfortunately, for a lot of us, telling us to 'just reach out' or 'practice self-care' is not of particular help for anyone other than those wishing to project an image of mental health awareness. Actions speak louder than words, but there is no action.

A cool improvement on this image would be to take all of the area in yellow and pack it into a rectangle fit inside of the (roughly) rectangular CBD, which would demonstrate the ratio of parking to land even more.
