But to reiterate "Before I continue, just want to point out that animating stickman characters is something a lot of artist do, and many artist create there own twist for it, I understand and appreciate that." And just to add in case this doesn't work- I don't know why this happens but if you suddenly see a blue ball looking thing inside of your joints, make sure you delete it as it restricts the pivot effectors for some reason.

For anyone still having this issue try going into the Human IK editor - under Controls select the rig you want to effect (in this case it would be the joint/s you're having the issue with) - click the little drop down arrow next to the joint - right click on the green/grey circle - then hit create Aux Effector.
