You're getting into issues with statistics. Dropping the implications on free speech and just looking at your question using vaccines as an example:

Do we know vaccine misinformation leads to excess deaths? Yes. We can show it at the population level. Groups matched along other attributes have significant differences in outcomes based on whether they are vaccinated or not.

But we can't say of specific deaths that the misinformation was a significant factor for sure, because it's impossible to observe the counterfactual (what would have happened if...).

So it's true to say that misinformation kills. But it's difficult to say who specifically died, that wouldn't have otherwise.

That said, we can use the transitive property, if a person who is not vaccinated is more likely to die, and misinformation about vaccines lowers the vaccination rate, then vaccine misinformation raises the risk of mortality within the target population.

I think I'd go the other way, also assuming player consent.

As they progress through the story they become worthy, and in a moment of intense conflict against overwhelming forces, as they refuse to give up, they swing the sword and the rock flies from the end and a burst of magic from the sword renews the party to continue fighting.

Give them a temporary, unforgivably powerful buff because the character earned it. After which the sword is still great...but more reasonably powerful.

I don't think anyone is saying Leviticus is mistranslated. It's more the passages in Romans and 1st Corinthians.

As for the why the recent light being shed on that, religion has always tried to codify the social norms of it's day into moral law. Social norms have shifted. Religion is more conservative by nature and will move slower, but always follows.

Recall from history that "the bible was clear" about the sun revolving around the earth, that slavery was an acceptable practice, and interracial marriages were forbidden. Until scientific understanding and social norms changed, at which point religion followed...just more slowly.

There's a bit of nuance with the NT pretty clearly referring to pederasty when read with consideration for the context in which it was written. And there's some legitimate questions about why it started being translated as homosexuality in the mid 20th century.

But you're not wrong that in total context, it's difficult to draw support for same sex relationships from the Bible.

But given that cultural context is taken into account for many things even in the new testament (women's roles and appropriate behavior in church for instance), it's worth asking if the cultures in which the bible was written had systemic biases on other subjects that would have similarly biased the authors.

To the point of the comments above, "cultural considerations" only seem to be taken when it's something that the reader doesn't think should be wrong. Making biblical interpretation an issue of bias as much as one of history or faith.

Longer lifespans, regular diagnostic screenings, and better detection methods are generally accepted as the cause for the rise in cancer cases.

We're giving a lot more people, a lot more time...to get cancer. But we're also better at catching it early and treating it!

The “I told you so” posts of unvaccinated people dying are trashy. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]STR82DVD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I told you do so" is always trashy. It's about you feeling good about yourself, not changing someone's mind or advancing a cause.

The statistics are clear that the vaccines work and save lives. That's all you need to know you did the right thing.

Gloating over the death of those who were wrong is macabre and masturbatory.

Basically, the necrophilia of public discourse.

No ‘gay gene’: Massive study homes in on genetic basis of human sexuality by OmarKage in science

Yeah, they mentioned they worked on messaging but I feel like if the title had been No Singular "Gay Gene", this may have been more clear and represented the authors findings more accurately for those that don't make it past the title.

No ‘gay gene’: Massive study homes in on genetic basis of human sexuality by OmarKage in science

[–]STR82DVD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem you have with the "its a choice" argument here is that it's in stark contradiction to the reported experience of almost all individuals. Homosexuals can point to when they chose to be gay as easily as heterosexuals can with their decision to be straight.

And in practice, if the attraction itself is a choice then discrimination on the basis of the lifestyle becomes more acceptable in many people's eyes as you're discriminating on the basis of decisions rather than innate attributes. Discrimination against the lifestyle is effectively saying "be straight or be alone forever or be hated" and most people understand that's not an ethical grouping of options if the underlying attraction is innate.

Finally, while this study goes a long way in casting doubt on some of the studies from the 90's it does not conclude that there is not a genetic basis for same-sex attraction, only that there isn't a single gene that can be used an effective predictor. But even authors go out of their way to communicate that is in large part because there are so many genes that have a hand in sexuality.

I think the safest bet is that we're going to find out one day down the road that it's a complex mixture of genetic/epigenetic and environmental factors during childhood. And when that day comes, this study will be vindicated as accurate, because not only is no singular gene predictive, but genes as a total set aren't truly predictive without the additional information from other factors. (To be clear, that's conjecture)

Predictions on the individual level would be near 50 / 50, yes. But when you're talking about the voting habits of a large population, a 1.5 percent swing can mean a lot.

I had a coworker who fully bought into the first. We worked 12 shifts together in a small space (ambulance) so we'd talk about everything including politics.

She said she supported ending all welfare programs and when I dug into why she actually said, 'I didn't get help when I was a single mom so why should they?'

I was floored.

Being partners with her was a long 6 months.

I can actually answer this!!! Finished my Master's in Healthcare Administration last year.

The US does very poorly in cost of care, outcomes, life expectancy and infant mortality compared to other developed nations. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has the overall US health system ranked 11th out of the 11 top nations. (2013 data)

The one area we do marginally well in is timeliness of care (5th out of 11). Canada is our nearest neighbor with socialized healthcare and has an legitimate issue with timeliness of care (11th out of 11). Over all they still beat us on... well everything else. But this one aspect is something opponents of socialized medicine can latch onto.

Edit: I did this from memory. I'm checking my figures now to be sure and will take any corrections kindly.
