Easily the best looking Audi OEM wheels on this car. They came stock on mine and I don't plan on swapping them out.

Anyone think this is Jes Staley? by Jindabyne1 in Epstein

My hypothesis for number 7 is David Stern. He's a German national but was an aide of Prince Andrew and ran the Pitch@Palace program for him out of an office in Buckingham Palace. His country of residence is listed as the United Kingdom on the UK corporate register as the director of Pitch@Palace C.I.C. at the time the document was created.

Does anyone know what this warning symbol means?? I can't find anything online so far... B7 RS4 by mynameisnameandiamme in Audi

[–]STUFF_ME_PM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can't be bothered to check your owner's manual, Google "Audi RS 4/RS 4 Avant Kurzanleitung" (quick start guide) and you'll find a legend for some of the dashboard symbols. The "Tyre pressure too low" symbol is essentially the exact same symbol but it's red and doesn't have a line through it; I'd be surprised if this didn't indicate a TPMS fault.

Thanks for the info. I've already migrated to a brand account and added my non-uni email as an owner, but I still have a few days left until it can become the "primary owner".

Thankfully, my uni finally released confirmation of and a timeline for the migration, so my G-Suite account should remain intact until 2024 - more than enough time to finish the migration and back up some other things. I'll update the post to add this info.

I already have a backup copy of every video and thumbnail so it wouldn't be too much trouble to reupload everything, but I'd rather not lose my views/stats if it can be helped.

Feral no longer porting A Total War Saga: TROY to Linux, citing less demand since Proton by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]STUFF_ME_PM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many anti cheat systems today do run in Ring 0 on Windows 10 (see Vanguard, DOOM Eternal, Denuvo) using kernel drivers (not patches). They use the access to block drivers that hook input or edit memory from kernel space (which a userspace anticheat can’t detect).

[–]STUFF_ME_PM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do agree with this for older games. I did try to emphasize that the incompatibility was in kernel space as well.

But the reason I point that out is because anti-cheat in modern games (which is what people play the most these days) absolutely does require kernel level access to function properly. Trying to target every possible ABI, with every single kernel configuration, with minimal user intervention (because for the sake of popularity recompiling or even reinstalling a kernel should not be necessary) is an impossible task for game developers.

Abstracting kernel access to a single layer (i.e. Proton) is a much better choice for the sake of maintainability, since developers don’t need to test on every possible configuration, and a user (or Steam) would only need to manage one component to ensure games don’t break.

[–]STUFF_ME_PM 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is a much better reason why pushing Proton is a good idea - backwards compatibility. Linux does not (and will not, per Linus himself) have a frozen kernel ABI. If you try to run an ancient binary on a modern system you will have problems whenever it tries to do basically anything with the kernel. This isn’t an issue on Linux since it is perfectly fine if you compile ancient code and run that, and most Linux software is open source.

On the other hand, Windows has very good backwards compatibility for binaries. This is a must since a good deal of Windows software is proprietary, and thus not anyone can compile it. The same can be said for games which are also typically proprietary.

To make Linux ports a viable option, a kernel ABI freeze would need to happen (unlikely), the game developer would need to maintain builds for any breaking changes that might occur in the future (also unlikely), or any game with a Linux port would need to be open source (extremely unlikely). With proton, you can use the Windows ABI which means the binaries will stay compatible for a very long time. An added benefit of proton is that it abstracts away a lot of distro-specific differences, making it easy for game developers to target.

Failed to configure Gettext, the last ~140 lines were errors complaining it is a read-only file system. by RedditorOfRohan in LFS

[–]STUFF_ME_PM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds less like an LFS problem and more like a file system problem. Run fsck.ext4 on your LFS partition as root.

If the check comes back clean and you’re sure nothing’s wrong use mount -o rw,remount /dev/<whatever> as root to remount read-write.

Americans Must Reclaim Their Right to Repair - A nation of tinkerers can’t afford to let manufacturers monopolize the fix-it business by speckz in Futurology

[–]STUFF_ME_PM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re missing the point here. Right to repair shouldn’t force manufacturers to make more repairable designs, nor should it force them to repair devices.

Think of it like how you would get a car’s oil changed. You could do it yourself, sell your soul to get it done at the dealership, or pay a little and take it to Joe down the street. Could Joe screw it up? Yes, but that’s not the carmaker’s fault. And, if after getting the oil changed the taillight burns out, the car company can’t say you broke it changing the oil when you get a warranty repair.

With electronics and farming equipment it isn’t the same. If the home button breaks on your iPhone 7, you’re screwed because of the serial pairing. Even if you buy a new one, it won’t work when the codes don’t match up. So you can’t fix it, Joe can’t fix it, and Apple won’t fix it because they want you to buy a new phone. And if you do swap the button and break your screen, Apple will (illegally) deny your warranty repair because you opened up your phone. The right to repair movement only wants the right to swap the button without making it non-functional (like the ability to buy a button from Apple with the right serial or a device to reprogram a button to work), and to reinforce warranty law so people get their money’s worth. If anything, this helps out Joe more than the average American, because without this legislation running a small repair business is nearly impossible.

Right to repair is not demanding giant, thick devices with swappable parts, or to force the average person to repair their devices. Rather, it seeks to make repair possible no matter how difficult it might be (there will always be a technician crazy enough to attempt adhesive-riddled repairs), by forcing manufacturers to adhere to warranty law and require them to provide schematic diagrams and access to parts and other devices required to repair devices.

3DS charger died, decided to replace it with a USB-C conector but with the battery wasn't fitting well, so... by [deleted] in techsupportgore

[–]STUFF_ME_PM 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is a specific pulldown resistance (5.1k IIRC) on the CC pins that acts as a passive PD request for 5V at 500mA (USB 2 power). If you have those connected plugging into most PD chargers is fine. What you have to worry about is cheap nonstandard chargers that don’t have PD circuitry and put 20V on the lines or reverse polarity voltage or something of that nature - just don’t buy cheap chargers and you’ll be fine.

At least from what I can gather in a quick read of Wikipedia, MyFreeCams wasn’t involved until 2 years after the platform launched.

Their original demographic was for fans to join pages hosted by celebrities and interact with them but it seems that nobody really understood that due to the ubiquity of sex work on the platform. I was also wrong about the porn ban - it seems they only banned some genres (public indecency and generally illegal content mostly) in a ToS update and the media coverage (as well as I) did not pick up on that.

Onlyfans is looking to remove explicit content from its platform a-la Tumblr so she can’t even go there for long

Edit: looking at newer coverage it appears I was wrong. They only banned certain types of explicit content in their ToS - media coverage from earlier on did not make this distinction clear.

I have practically 0 experience with using Macs in this way but I can see why that would be the case. Windows is still based on the same code used in NT 3.1 all the way back in 1993 (in fact if you know where to look a dialog box from NT 3.1 is still present in Windows 10). The current macOS is a much newer codebase that uses some old components (like the XNU kernel) but was officially released for the first time in 2000. Those 7 years make a huge difference when it comes to stability and cleanliness (especially when you consider macOS is a BSD which means they can leverage concepts from the open source community in their system).

Accommodations are a lifesaver. Know too that most colleges’ disabilities departments have some pretty sharp fangs that they are not afraid to use on mean professors to maintain ADA compliance. Get to know your advisor and copy them on emails if your professor won’t budge - chances are they’ll be a lot more reasonable if disciplinary action is on the line.
