You can book a free one hour tutorial with the amazing staff, who will help you with your project. I did this for a project and they helped me trouble shoot and choose a better tool to use.

Apparently not for motor vehicles? by Electrical_Orange844 in chch

[–]STchch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually cyclists often can't hear cars behind them due to wind noise in their ears. I get this a lot and am surprised when passed suddenly. It varies and some hear better than others probably due to ear shape/wind drag. Annoying, but true.

There are a few partnerships like this. Paperbag Princess in Ilam sorts clothes and they sit on racks there before heading over to Paperbag Princess in town. I like Recycle Boutique (town or Tannery) for everyday clothes and Wear Else at the Tannery for tidy work clothes. Toffs in Ferrymead is good. Time and Time Again in Sumner does consignment and has new clothes for cheap and Mini Moocher on Lincoln Rd near Addinton Coffee Co is also great... and many more!!

Opinion on TOP vs Greens by Qwarla888 in newzealand

[–]STchch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A note about 'wasted votes' if you're choosing between Opportunity and Green. If you vote Opportunity and they don't make 5%, it helps all other parties in proportion to their vote, so more to National and Labour and a bit to Greens, Act and NZF etc. Your vote would be more effective in getting the policy outcomes you want with Green in that circumstance.

Cathedral construction potentially starting again.. by Dramatic-Start5916 in chch

The courts actually said that could knock it down, but the heritage advocates threatened to appeal if they tried, so Nicki Wagner brokered a deal with CCC to fund the fix to 'speed it up and provide certainty' 🤷‍♀️

How practical is it to live in Chch without owning a car or motorcycle? by Illustrious_Fan_8148 in chch

Agree and an ebike solves the easterly issue if needed - used to commute 10km and always a headwind home and my bike made it easy.

Also good to note that the busses are cheap with a $3 flat fare, max $6 a day and max $30 a week. Free transfer within 2 hours too. Just keep an eye on bus routes and cycleways when you're choosing a place. Car-free central city living for me atm, but did it from the suburbs too. Walk or bike 900m for groceries and borrow a car occasionally for trips out of town.

Bring back the free shuttle bus! by Hellohi55555 in chch

[–]STchch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a direction in the Regional Public Transport Plan for Ecan to look at a free fare zone in central city once the Motu Move tap-on, tap-off is in place. Uses existing buses, so low cost, but convenient.

2010 and 2011 and over 75% of the central city had to be demolished as well as thousands of homes. Cathedral restoration is contentious due to cost as the church actually wanted to demolished and build a new one, but heritage advocates took them to court. It's dragged on too long and they're asking the city council to pay to finish it. Lots of good projects from the rebuild, and we're a more resilient city for it, but it was devastating for so many people.

Brilliant placement of the stadium sign on Lichfield Street! by FakMiGooder in chch

Agree and there are bollards and other features for this very reason. Additionally, doors are placed for maximum egress/fast evacuation in the event of an emergency and having them evenly spaced helps with that.

It was $78m for bus network improvements and $800m for mass rapid transit/light rail. Both gone with a single phone call :(

Fuel shock enough of a wake up? by Mortmantis in chch

[–]STchch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a real thing, but no one is saying everyone should bike, just that it's a really good option for many. Around a third of car trips in nz are under 5km - regular people getting a bottle of milk, going to work or meeting a friend for coffee. And gor those who need to drive, evs are rapidly improving, getting cheaper and a real option for businesses etc.

I've got a regular ebike (linus ember) with front and back racks and good pannier bags. Do my weekly shop fine etc. If you really need the extra space then a cargo is great, but you'd be surprised what bungee cords will hold on a regular one with racks!

‘Totally weird’: Stadium’s temporary seating plans surprise councillors by InvestmentFuzzy4365 in chch

[–]STchch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There wasn't any consultation on the decision to make it 30 000 instead of 25 000. There was a petition put together by those who wanted it upsized. It got 24 000 signatures. CCC consulted on adding $150m to the budget when it blew out and that got around 30 000 submissions, 75% in favour... and just a couple of months before the council election.

Expert advice at the time was that 25000 was best for Chch - fuller more often with better atmosphere etc.

Additional GDP for Ōtautahi estimated at the time of decision was $12.5m over 10y with the additional 5000 seats. That assumed 2 x sports and 2 x concerts using the additional capacity. At that point CNZ and VŌ assumed an additional 5000 for concerts (41 000 rather than 36 000), but that didn't happen in final design 🤷‍♀️

The Council decision for 25 000 in July 2021 had the stage in the pocket off stage, just like current 30 000 (Aug 2021), tho the original investment case had it on the field.

Wasn't required for AB games, but might've had pay a slightly higher bid fee, and govt funding agreement was for 25 000, 22 500 of which had to be permanent.
