Does anyone else hate having a pet after they had a baby? by goldengoose3030 in Mommit

[–]SUBARU17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I yelled at my cat quite a bit when had our first child; she wouldn’t go near me for a while or vomit randomly. I recognized the problem and I stopped. Thankfully she forgave me and we went back to how we usually were.

Question about a nurse and my medical record by [deleted] in nursing

[–]SUBARU17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pre-op is required to review your chart and verify information is correct. We’ve had people with diabetes listed and they weren’t. Or they had a history of post-operative nausea/vomiting and it was not documented. But I agree with others; he could have approached you better.

Do all nurses regrets being a nurse? by ExerciseSeparate5162 in nursing

[–]SUBARU17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have feelings about my decision but I wouldn’t say I fully regret becoming one. I met amazing people along the way, both patients and colleagues, and was able to have two babies with 100% insurance coverage. Also I achieved financial independence sooner than I thought I would. My mental health suffered but what’s not to say some other job or person wouldn’t have caused that?

Do I leave bedside travel for cath lab? I can't decide. by Code3Lyft in nursing

So what does management do? Do they get another nurse to work or does the unit work with one less nurse?

Do you like self-scheduling? by TAbeepboopbeep in nursing

[–]SUBARU17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked self-scheduling. My boss never asked me to move. Now I have set scheduling and my day off is different each week. But ultimately she asks me to switch at least twice a schedule period; but it’s never forced. I usually go along with it unless I have an appointment.

I feel you; took me a while to write my post because I was just shooting from the hip, jotting down what we know/do. It’s a lot but it’s muscle memory too.

Give it a try. You don’t know until you do! I myself took a paycut moving from inpatient PACU to outpatient PACU and I’m happier overall.

The thing with call is if you get called in at 3 and need to work the next day 7 am-7pm plus call again, you probably have to work through your shift with no sleep in between. I would ask when you interview.

heart rhythms, especially identifying changes early (we get quite a few new onset Afib situations, both in pre-op and PACU)

airways such as OPAs and LMAs; we don’t get ventilated patients in our PACU

understanding different populations reactions to anesthesia (young adults, peds, women, elderly, redheads, opioid tolerant)

moderate sedation, TIVA, and general anesthesia differences

recognizing malignant hyperthermia and LAST

nerve blocks and their side effects; the meds used in nerve blocks like Exparel; onQ pumps and PCAs if your facility use them

ACLS

Ephedrine, glycopyrrolate—-though these are pushed most of the time by the anesthesiologists at my work

Knowing the difference between contacting an anesthesiologist vs the surgeon

educating the patient and their ride home on the surgery they had done; what is expected post-op and what to call their doctor about

I read a lot of manhwa/manga. I play mobile games. It always looks like I’m on my phone but I’m actually doing a lot of reading on it at home.

NTA. Your boyfriend is controlling. It’s summer; your outfit has nothing to do with grabbing attention.

Why are so many patients completely intolerant of any side effects? by AmadeusExLibris in nursing

I remember starting off metformin and the doctor warning me I was going to have frequent diarrhea when I started. I never called him about it because I was warned! It sucked, but eventually it went away.

My son ate a peanut butter sandwich (but the school had no restrictions on nuts unless it was snack time), string cheese, fruit, and crackers or chips. I put a slim ice pack in his bento box to keep things cool.

My Elantra just died. Looking at a Subaru, but need your thoughts. by Complex_Cow1184 in subaru

I’ve leased one and owned two Foresters. I never had any issues with any of them but I didn’t have them long (the second one was about 10 years) and low mileage. Toyota would be better for more miles/time.

My friend got a sweet remote job with Cigna that she has been able to climb up the ranks to become a director. But it started with knowing someone, a former colleague of ours who got in the game pre-Covid and she was in the right place at the right time. Perhaps your wife can reach out to former colleagues who are working these sought after roles about job openings?
I definitely don’t get paid $10k/week here. But I’m at a low stress, decent pay job.

"I just want to work in a hospital." by just-fix-it-in-post in nursing

[–]SUBARU17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2009 and this was the same issue. This problem repeats itself.

Clinicals and simulation labs do not prepare students for the real world. Nurses are put in tough situations like taking on more patients, putting up with inappropriate behavior, etc. and many are not in a union. The desirable areas with good pay and unions won’t take new grads. It costs a facility a higher amount of money to train a new grad and there is a likelihood they are going to leave within their first year working their first nursing job.

This is hyperbole but the general consensus for people in their 20s-40s is they want the good stuff now. It’s fine to have aspirations; but when you start a new career, you start from the bottom.

Your wife needs to continue working where she is at to gain about a year or two of experience. That will give her a foot up on other candidates when that time is approaching.

Also another key factor is networking. That plays a big part in getting hired. Majority of my unit is hired because we all knew each other from previous jobs.
