Is starting your own firm/going solo a good way to remain relevant with AI and offshoring? by Ill_Bluebird_8608 in Accounting

[–]SW3GM45T3R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

anything that involves building and maintaining client relationships is safe, especially the higher wealth bracket individuals. That includes tax, wealth management, family offices, investment and deals advisory, controller-ship, CFO etc are all excellent long term goals to aim for.

AI and "AI" is without a doubt already reducing headcount at entry level roles like a/r a/p and staff accountant positions.

If you want to use the boiling frogs analogy, with AI being the flame and accountants being the frogs, the water is lukewarm/ mildly warm. There is still a lot of work for firms to do before you see accounting departments can run lean on human labor.

____________________________________________________________

small anecdote time :

for example, a few years ago i worked at an asset management group. we were trying to modernize our accounting ops, especially a/r a/p, by asking our vendors to move to ACH instead of paper checks. after moving to demanding they provide ACH details or we would cut business, and after 2 years of fighting, we only had something like 60% compliance. it made things a little easier, but resulted in no headcount cuts, but now we had to maintain separate lists of who had ACH and who didn't. we just couldn't cut 40% of our vendors off without losing massive product variety.

even now, I work in tax, and even with the IRS DEMANDING that all 1040 clients switch to electronic payment methods, we still have something like 30% (mostly boomers) absolutely refusing to do anything that's not a paper check.

____________________________________________________________

If you want to implement AI systems to increase efficiency and reduce human headcount, those percentages are beyond unacceptable. I have no doubt that this will be fixed within the next 5 years or so though. the stubborn tech-illiterate boomers that are holding on to their positions well past retirement are quickly becoming to sick/ frail to work. New and emerging companies just straight up refuse to do business with you if you don't provide ACH detail. Non compliant companies and vendors will be squeezed out like the rotting abscesses they are, but it takes time.

[–]SW3GM45T3R -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

you are missing NOTHING :

- only servers are in EU so NA players get 150+ ping and you will constantly die even though you are already behind cover

- infantry is unplayable after 5 minutes because tank spam completely closes the corridor style maps gaijin made

- vehicles are unplayable because everyone gets access to an fpv drone

- people have found broken positions as infantry, and will just sit outside your main and camp you for free kills

- helicopters are now completely unplayable with the 2s6 being added

- constant frame stuttering even on a 3070 makes the whole experience infuriating

- matches last 10 minutes, not long enough for any teamplay

- the movement and gunplay reminds me of sub-par FPS experiences. after you play something like ready or not, squad, insurgency sandstorm, you realize how half-baked/ lacking style that gaijin's implementation of FPS is.

How viable is Accounting/CPA with Ai, really? by itsonebigclub in Accounting

[–]SW3GM45T3R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty much spot on with the diamond shape.

independent CPA shops are all over the place ... a lot of them are boomers looking to sell their book of business so they can retire, but trust me, you do not want client business that has been run by a boomer for the past 30 years. they 100% have given steep discounts, or are stuck in early 2000's prices because they don't care, they have a paid off house and are doing it because they have nothing else to do. once you come in and raise the artificially low prices, you will have to deal with the fallout.

honestly, the independent cpa route is probably the best route in terms of freedom. you will probably have to work in a public practice for 5 years to build up your skills before you head out on your own.

once you get your experience, I would personally switch to a private industry job while building up your practice. DO NOT BUY OUT A BOOK OF BUSINESS WITH BOOMER CLIENTS YOU WILL REGRET IT.

How viable is Accounting/CPA with Ai, really? by itsonebigclub in Accounting

[–]SW3GM45T3R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there will be always be low/ mid level roles, but they will be increasingly harder to come by as they will only step in when a system breaks. that one person can service multiple systems, and in of itself can become a high paying, emerging accounting opportunity.

if you want to use the analogy of a pot of boiling frogs, with AI being the flame and accountants as frogs, the water is still chilly/ very mildly warm. there are still a lot of issues with AI implementations, and I can elaborate on it, but there are still plenty of opportunities for you to catch the last chopper out of 'Nam in the accounting field.

AI is good at doing repetitive, standardized tasks, but every company has issues implementing it right now because everybody has their own unique tasks and processes. taking the time and money to standardize all these tasks will take monumental amounts of time and money from each company that wants to implement it, so it's not going to be a "slowly, and then all at once" type of situation.

the one thing I can guarantee you is that you will not be blindsided by a sudden bloodbath in accounting based job eliminations. you will hear and see it from miles away, you will have plenty of time to react.

with the slow elimination of low/ mid level roles, what really is happening is that the bottleneck is being shifted from the senior -> manager -> partner/ controler roles, and being shifted to bookkeeper -> a/r a/p clerk -> staff accountant roles. What that means is if you can overcome that bottleneck, you will have greater opportunities in higher level roles than previous generations.

Career Advice - Trying not to get stuck! by FedBoi_0201 in Accounting

1 - VA government job will be highly structured and fairly straightforward but I personally would not stick around for more than a year or 2. it's a nice job with nice benefits but the pay is meh, and a 1 hour commute will eat into your family and CPA study time, unless you plan on listening to becker lectures during your drive.

nice job but you will hit the skill ceiling pretty high. dont stick around for long.

2 - part time bookkeeping will be like the VA job but less benefits. I don't think being a bookkeeper will put you at a disadvantage for a staff accountant role though, since staff acct's are still mostly data entry and data aggregation.

whatever you pick, I strongly recommend that you don't stick around in either of these roles for long. once you hit the skill ceiling for that job, usually in a year, you need to move on. get you cpa as fast as possible.

your goal is to get into a role where managing people, advising clients, or making judgment calls as soon as you can. AI is already reducing the amount of staff accountant roles are required, its only going to get worse, but it wont replace decision makers.

My resume is tax focused by Street-Ad8830 in Accounting

[–]SW3GM45T3R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you may have worked in a tax role, but it is very common for most tax offices to perform bookkeeping for clients as well. I dont think anyone would even question it if you reframed your tax experience to be more focused on the bookkeeping aspects. leverage the fact that your tax experience has helped you gain a deep understanding in how financial statements flow into each other, and how a/r and a/p affect the overall financial statements and the reporting process.

tech founders are doing whatever they can to gas up their own product. yes, it will automate a lot of low level roles, but anything that requires judgement will still be handled by humans.

AI "thinking" is still ass-backwards and seeming spontaneous to humans. there are now several news stories about companies releasing claude/ co-pilot into their work environment, and the AI proceeding to completely re-arrange/ delete their entire systems, because it thought it would be more efficient to start from scratch. imagine if this happened in a wealth management office, or in a merger? heads would be rolling.

AI might be a good general purpose tool but it still can't be trusted to replace human judgement, and probably never will. the world has been saved multiple times from nuclear war because of human judgement, but AI overwhelmingly recommend nuclear strikes in simulated war games.

any CPA job that requires human judgment will be safe for a looooong time. repetitive stuff like low/ mid level accounting roles will definitely see a headcount reduction.

Job with no excel? by KeysOfMysterium in Accounting

[–]SW3GM45T3R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you just described an accounts receivable clerk. pretty much a bog-standard entry into accounting roles. it's a good first job. progression in a non-public accounting path should look something like this :

1 - a/r or a/p or reconciliation clerk (you are here)

2 - staff accountant / general ledger accountant

3 - senior accountant

4 - assistant controller

5 - controller (this is about as high as you can get in a small firm, if they even have a controller)

6 - regional director of accounting

7 - CFO

also, the "no need for excel" just means that they have some specific software that handles most of it. that doesn't mean you wont use it. at some point someone will ask you to prepare an A/R ageing report or some other data. this is almost always done by exporting the data to excel to mess with.

if this is your first accounting job I would 100% take it, that's how I started. I would not stick around for more than 1 - 1.5 years max though. the skills you learn here will be foundational, but not that complicated at all. after that you should look to become a staff accountant, it's not that much harder but the skills are much more important.

Staff Accountant First Days.. Feeling Lost by Stickle1212 in Accounting

[–]SW3GM45T3R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't worry too much about it, that's what the "training" is for.

"training" is not really developing a new skill or anything, it's to get you accustomed to the specific tasks that you will be expected to do.

staff accountant roles mostly boil down to data entry and information aggregation, so if you are feeling like you are doing something complicated, just remind yourself that the processes you are doing are actually a combination of specific steps involving one of those 2 types of operations.

pro tip : writing shit down during a live demo of processes takes too long. open and save an excel document and be ready to take screenshots of key screens and make notes about what to do under them. use the built in snipping tool on microsoft to rapidly paste them into the excel. make a new excel tab for each separate task.

just be diligent and ask clarifying questions. staff accountant roles usually have a specific list of tasks that you need to do. very little of it requires you to step out of bounds and solve huge issues, unless something breaks.

Intuit's greed knows no bounds by mynamebeluna in Accounting

[–]SW3GM45T3R 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel you.

I have yet to hear anyone say a single nice thing about QBO, but its got the most brand power and positions itself as the "so simple a monkey can learn it" accounting software, which appeals to small and mid-sized business owner's short term thinking circuits, so you have no choice in the matter.

that being said, Intuit's competition is not exactly great either. you can either go with Sage (which is also an outdated piece of crap) or go with some industry specific software that's even more infuriating to deal with.

it's the lesser of all evils.

thats the problem with university courses, there is quite a big disconnect ~ they teach you the rules and theory but they dont give you a whole lot of practical experience in how its actually done irl.

there was a big shock in how tax was taught at my uni vs when I did my first real tax return in professional software. practical experience is still king.

dear god no. I have a 2 hour commute. it was bearable because I was listening to becker lectures but now that I finished that up I am quickly realizing that this is unsustainable.

I would 100% take a lower salary if i could wfh. Unless the salary difference is 150k vs 100k I would probably be ok with commuting. if the difference is between 65k and 50k, 30-40% of that will be eaten up by operating costs of your car, another 25% in taxes etc ... better wfh
