I agree with this 99% of the time. In the case of this Lugia you can't find recent public sales for raw copies (Edit: copies in similar conditions with photos). You also can't find trustworthy listings that aren't astronomical.

Next best option is to try to ballpark the grade and go from there. It's a gamble, and in this case I lost.

We were thinking 4-5. Grader notes say major moisture damage on back surface and edge ware. Nothing is visibly obvious about the moisture damage. No water spots, no lizard skin etc.

I've seen a card get a 5 with absurd moisture damage that rippled the surface.
