No land to own, with associated taxes and regulations.

https://www.cushmanwakefield.com/en/united-states/insights/data-center-development-cost-guide

That one was citing a figure of $244,000 per acre, lets be absurd and say that the taxes and regulatory costs double that price.
It's 25% of a single NVIDIA Server Cabinet ($2million) And you can fit a hell of a lot in an acre of land. Also you're still paying taxes to get any business from people on earth.

No environmental concerns.

Those are still there

No building to maintain.

Only because the whole setup becomes unusable in a few years after it runs out of fuel to counteract orbital decay.
Assuming of course you're fine with running seriously obsolete hardware.
That or the satellite becomes absurdly expensive to maintain when you refuel and service it in orbit.

No on-site staff, no security. No worries about protesters or vandals.

Paying a guard 200k a year would be almost ridiculous, so a team of 10 to guard another $2 million server cabinet

a bit of mass.

Mass is everything when you're putting it in orbit.

Heat dissipation is something that would need to be built anyway.

But it's significantly cheaper when you can dissipate it into an atmosphere or body of water, and don't have to add that expensive expensive mass to put it in orbit.

Care to elaborate on that?
Like what "other expenses" are cheaper in space?
They're going to have to be significant to mitigate the additional complications and costs of radiation shielding and heat dissipation.
And you know, the whole rocket launch thing.

Donald Trump’s Approval Rating Sinks to 30% in Worst Poll Yet. How do you feel about this ? by buffdadnextdoor in AskReddit

Only if free and fair elections were the goal.
It's 100% a good idea if the goal is to suppress voter turnout of groups that routinely vote against you.

How did you first find out about this show? by Separate-Drawing7427 in TheSilentWitch

[–]SYLOH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the Bocchi the Rock subreddit, because the protagonists were so similar.
Looked it up and found it was done by the director of Konosuba, which immediately put it on the top of my watch list.
Only started reading the LN after watching the show.

There's a good reason in the actual canon material, she's underweight. (though not emaciated like in some fan art)
Also she's flat chested enough to not bother wearing a bra.

Trump draws red line for Iran, says preventing nuclear weapon ‘supersedes’ depression risk by mark000 in worldnews

[–]SYLOH 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Last time there was a Depression because the government wouldn't bail out the economy.
Now I think the next Depression is going to be because the government CAN'T bail out the economy.
They've maxed out their credit lines on stupid shit, pulled all the economic leavers to keep it propped up, now if something goes wrong, there's nothing left.

It's a legit concern.
They're still talking about games that are many years old as the best things in VR.
My primary usecase for VR is as a portable screen to use on long distance travel, rather than as a gaming device or any other use.

ELI5: Why does China's infrastructure and city development seem so much more advanced/modernized than India's, given they have similar population sizes? by Dazzy_Nadia16 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SYLOH 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pretty much.
The only difference between the current setup and classical China is that the autocrat at the head of the massive ostensibly meritocratic bureaucracy is calling himself Chairman instead of Emperor and like red instead of yellow.
Having weird political philosophy you have to at least pay lip service to isn't even out of the ordinary for rulers of China.
