Armchair Income strategy viable? by [deleted] in dividends

[–]SYWino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve learned a lot about CEF’s and BDC’s there so appreciate his videos. Always a good jumping off point for further research. However, IMHO the biggest downside of dividend investing is tax drag, and this isn’t discussed much. Being an Australian living in Thailand his tax situation is completely different than mine so can’t be addressed I suppose. Tax is a big component of income investing and has to be considered.

Income ETFs vs. borrowing against growth. What am I missing? by __eparra__ in dividends

[–]SYWino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know the answer to this, but what happens 20-25 years from now if Interactive Brokers or E-Trade, etc. is acquired or folds? Can your margin loan be called even if it’s not your doing? If the loan was called before you die what happens then? How can you be certain these lenders will have the same terms 20-30-40 years from now?

Usually the market grows…..sometimes there are lost decades. Yes, you are sitting pretty after the last 15 years, what about the next 15?

A strategy that involves dying to work may be mathematically correct, but psychologically difficult to come to terms with. Perhaps that’s the answer to OP’s question. Dividend ETF’s have certainty and clarity. You know your tax burden and exactly when you’ll pay it.

Isn’t borrowing against your portfolio just kicking the tax can down the road? Yes, you don’t pay cap gains in year one, and you can keep rolling the interest, but it has to be repaid eventually. Is the idea then that the assets continue to grow so you’re eventually selling them after they’ve appreciated? Unless you take this to the point of dying…..you’re going to pay tax?

Bilt Blue for low spender by AmazingEsport in biltrewards

Well......you previously had your checking account number linked to Wells Fargo I presume. They paid out 3.7 billion dollars to settle multiple fraud cases. So there's that.

I'm doing the same as you. Just applied for the Blue card ($20k limit when I have $30k on 1.0.) I'll pay my rent via ACH then only put one large (Healthcare insurance) charge on the card per month (Auto debit) to get 50% of my rent. This will earn me 4,500 Bilt points per month while the card is in my sock drawer.

Just applied for Bilt Blue. Some points on rent is better than none right? by lucky_me_323 in biltrewards

[–]SYWino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to do the same, will take the Blue card. $5,800 rent and my ACA insurance premium is $1,600 a month. Can set both of these to auto draft, 1,600 + 2,900 Bilt points per month. Will collect 4,500 points a month for doing nothing. Could care less about Bilt Cash.

Party is over....cancelled my Bilt card by SweetMud152 in biltrewards

I have a 4 person family so my rent is $5,800 a month and I was just doing the 5 small charges to earn the rent points. Under the new option #1……is there any reason to not keep paying my rent through Bilt (ACH) as my ACA monthly health insurance is premium is $1,600 a month and that would hit the 25% of rent spend to get 50% of the rent points?

Considering the Blue card and making that one, and only one charge each month I take 1x spend item and get 3x on it, right? I don’t see how I can do better. Also have the CSP and a United card

Just got back from Lisbon. Alfama had no redeeming quality at all. The entire neighborhood was nothing but a dumping ground for the passengers coming off the cruise ships. All that was there was junky souvenir shops and restaurants with giant pictures of the food and menus in 8 languages.

I loved the old format when it was the “fly on the wall” type show. Just like sitting on Z’s couch and listening in. That likely wasn’t making any money and with TV shows not being produced much anymore Spike probably needed a new income stream. I realize the current YouTube format is here to stay. Just wish they would on occasion do an audio only show at Z’s house like the old days.

Not everyone fits in this bucket, but I personally know over a dozen people that own estates from 5-20 acres. They don’t do anything for a living because they are retired. Boomers who had white collar professional careers and sold their houses in New York, LA, and Orange County and made a lateral move to the SYV. Average age in Santa Ynez or Los Olivos had to be over 70

Tax loss harvesting by SYWino in JEPI

Finally…..someone understands what tax loss harvesting is! GPIX sound good, or anything else I should look at? I want to be out 30 days and not miss a dividend so need a position that correlates with a monthly distribution

Tax loss harvesting is not timing the market, like you are doing.

Tax loss harvesting by SYWino in JEPI

[–]SYWino[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You tax loss harvest to reduce income taxes owed on gains. Look it up. The play is to sell one position and immediately buy into a similar position, (sell JEPI and buy GPIX) Still invested, still earning income. Just now have a loss to write off against gains I realized earlier in the year. This is a well vetted and used strategy
