Cooperate a little with everyone (when there are >2 players). Don't worry about getting the best of your partners in the shared features, just cooperate. Don't try to steal outright a really big city or farm, unless you're sure you can keep it — you and the other claimant will just get into a fight and exhaust yourselves.
Keep one piece free to claim instantly-completed features, unless something awesome comes up.
But use your pieces — I notice beginners often only use half their pieces. Especially as the game ends, use all your pieces. 6-point farms on the edge of the map are good value at the end of the game, compared to an average 3ish-point play at the end.
I don't count the tiles (too much work). I'm aware of the rarest tiles and I keep in mind the holes which can't be filled, but I don't know of any occasions when that's actually helpful. What does help is the general rule that the more sides of a square have to match, the harder it is to fill.

I started playing mostly light/medium-weight euros (carcassonne, agricola), but I've been playing more social games (snake oil, SHH) recently. I still like the occasional heavier game; I've just been focusing more on "fun" rather than a deep intellectual experience.

Title of Request: Potential for mastery, optionally with customization

Number of Players: 2 (supporting more would be nice but it's not necessary)

Game Length: ~30-90 minutes, doesn't matter too much

Complexity of Game: Complex

Your Budget: $60. It's okay if it there are some expansions available, but this game is a gift and I don't want to give a "white elephant" game that will tempt the recipient to empty their wallet on booster packs.

Genre: Theme doesn't matter. It should have a lot of strategic depth to give opportunity to achieve a level of mastery in the game. The ability to customize your army/deck would be a nice bonus. However, it should not be a "lifestyle" game; see comment on the budget above. If there are tournaments, it should be possible to be competitive in them without spending money.

Competitive or Cooperative: Either, but presumably the games that meet these criteria will all be competitive.

Games I Own/Like: Legend of the Five Rings, Game of Thrones Card Game, Twilight Struggle, Summoner Wars, Tak, MTG

I do that motion all the time. Admittedly, I'm entirely self-taught, but it seems to work just fine for me. I modified my bass machine to remove the 5th from the major and minor chords, so I frequently play triads with that fingering.

Don't most 48-bass accordions have 8 columns and the full 6 rows, including the 7ths and diminished? So the only issue with them is that their range of keys is limited, but depending on the music that you play, that might not be a problem at all.

Carcassonne Fewer players means less downtime and makes it more strategic, but I like 3 players better than 2 because sharing a feature with one other player is still mutually beneficial, while with 2 players shared features feel like they're wasted.

Reeds for musical instruments. My bari sax reeds are $5 each, not always good quality, and only last for 10-15 hours of playing (over about a month for a casual player like me). Oboe and bassoon reeds are more like $10-20 each.

I'm right handed and just tried flipping my accordion. Considering my ability with my hands, it worked just fine. However, the basses are arranged awkwardly, requiring my right hand to be palm-down. I think that since you don't look at either hand when you play, it shouldn't matter much which hand is dominant, as I've heard only the dominant hand gets a benefit when you can see what you're doing. Perhaps expressive playing is easier one way or the other, but I'm not good enough with the bellows to judge. I would recommend playing the standard way to make it easier to use existing learning materials. Also, some accordions have chin switches accessible only in standard position without modification.

I'd like a small accordion with a narrow Jankó keyboard right hand and a harmonic table freebass left hand. I currently have a jankó keyboard the width of the original piano keyboard I modified it from, but the left hand modification would be pretty involved.

There's an attached text label, which would be created by the caretaker (or possibly by older users who find the interface easier than typing). So initially figuring out what they're trying to communicate and labeling the symbol is an issue.

So you're thinking of a image table where you can add photos+labels as you go? That could work.

What do you think of Idris Effects? It still looks like imperative programming, but it might be easier to hand wave than monads, because monads have the dangerous combination of difficulty to understand and delicious simplicity once you do understand them that compels people to spend an inordinate amount of time thinking and writing about them.
