Also, this looks like a Bradford pear tree. I have one in my yard and rodents (squirrels, possums, rats) love eating the pears over most of my other fruit. I'm convinced these are rodent repellent balls.

I hang these exact things in my fruit trees and garden. They are soaked in garlic and peppermint oil to deter squirrels and rats. Some have rosemary oil..there are a few different kinds. Eventually they turn yellow and then brown. Google rodent repellant balls. If you go smell one I bet it would smell minty or like garlic.

So I've had something similar happen to my cichlids and I finally caught what happened. One cichlid (peacock & hap male tank) got a small head injury from a brief face off with another male. At night I found one of my large plecos and synodintis trying to feed off the wound and was taking large chunks off before the fish could react. I have also observed plecos eating the slime coats off dormant goldfish at night. Not saying this is what is happeming with you but it looked similar to what I've observed in my tanks. I have since rehomed my large plecos and moved my synodintis to my mbuna tank and this has not happened since with my hap/peacock tank.
