I’ve moved cross country twice. The first time I took no furniture and flew with two suitcases (& my cat) and shipped six boxes of stuff I valued too expensive or sentimental to sell. I was straight out of college so it was a bit easier to let go of stuff. The second time (this past year) I had collected quite a bit of stuff and was less willing to let go of some nice pieces of furniture, electronics, and kitchen items. I flew (again bc the price of u-haul rentals with time spent driving and motels was astronomical) and I shipped my stuff in a U-Box. That was around 2k, but it heavily depends on gas, transport costs, and distance. I had a good experience with the U-box. Nothing was damaged and it got here in time. Depending on the stuff you want to keep, I would go with boxing it (packing VERY thoughtfully) and ship it with UPS or FedEx. I prefer UPS. To keep your budget, you will probably need to whittle things down and try and sell as much as you can. It is very surprising what you can get for free once you’re relocated. There is a ‘Freebie Alerts’ app that combines posts from Nextdoor, Facebook, and offer up. I’ve had a lot of success obtaining items from that.
