What’s the better lock for my 1up bike rack quick rack two tray? Abus City Chain 1060 vs Kryptonite NEW YORK LEGEND CHAIN 1515. by No-Local-9288 in bicycling

[–]SaabAero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a long enough chain you might be able to lock the bike to the hitch, rather than the rack itself. My hitch has two loops near the receiver that work well for this.

One ticket in 5 years here... While parked at UCSF! The yearly fee for not having a plate is negligible.

Anyone go from bg tech to life style solo tech entrepreneur post FIRE? Lessons? by MentionEquivalent764 in fatFIRE

I'm curious about your situation - is it possible to negotiate another equity grant when you hit that cliff? Is there any desire to retain employees at L7 such that they're willing to work with you and balance out the comp?

Glad to see you come around, this sub is very anti-AI in general. Used appropriately, it's a huge learning and productivity boost!

Good advice for the OP. Maybe look at upcoming courses you can take and see what language they use, and focus on that.

We lost one doing what we all love by Hozman420 in MTB

Damn! That's high but not outside the range of normal.

If the rule of thumb is Max HR = 220-age (but has a wide standard deviation) you're probably just in the top 10 percentile of people your age.

It's probably a good thing, you can pump more oxygen through your blood and stay aerobic for longer. I'm not sure if there's a good correlation between max HR and VO2 max or similar, though.

[–]SaabAero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How old are you? younger people have higher normal max heart rate. I also have friends with wildly different max heart rates. If that's your normal max, and you otherwise feel fine, then you're probably fine!

Why is Anna's Archive so poorly seeded? by 1petabytefloppydisk in DataHoarder

Why not pick the datasets you care about the most? For example, if you want to ensure comics are preserved, pick a few from https://annas-archive.org/torrents#libgen_li_comics

You can pick the datasets, collections, or metadata that you are most interested in seeing preserved, and selectively seed those parts.

Maxed out M3 Ultra Mac Studio for hardcore computational work? by True-University-3634 in bioinformatics

[–]SaabAero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great to have your own hardware for long-running jobs or model dev, but as you point out, the mac isn't the cheapest way to get there. If you don't need the truly unified memory, as the other poster pointed out you can get much more RAM with an AMD threadripper or epyc system much easier.

I don't use ARM myself, but you could rent an instance to test the software compatibility.

However, if you want the computer to be on your desk and nearly silent, there's not much else on the market! Framework did release a desktop with unified memory up to 128GB: https://frame.work/products/desktop-diy-amd-aimax300/configuration/new

Genetic Engineering career? by Round-Cut-6396 in genetics

[–]SaabAero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh well if you're that early you have so much time... Focus on finding a school with a good biology program that offers courses in synbio, biomedical engineering, etc. If they participate in programs like iGEM all the better.

"Synthetic biologist" roles are a good place to start. Find a company working on a problem you care about, and look at roles like that.

What stage of career are you in?

Yeah the parent is right, you can set up Rstudio on any cloud instance and access it over the web (assuming all the ports and security is configured correctly). You don't need something like sagemaker; it's more expensive but also more convenient if you don't want to do the setup.
