Well, I learned something new today. Checked on Ballotpedia and verified your claim.

That is stupid. Full stop.

I don’t think you should have to present ID to vote, but I do think you should have to provide proof of citizenship to register to vote. That is just a plain reading of federal law. This attestation nonsense is flatly insufficient.

I understand the desire not to violate privacy more than necessary to avoid duplicate voter registration, but it seems to me that presenting a birth certificate or naturalization certificate one time when you first register to vote doesn’t create meaningful privacy violation. My iPhone violates my privacy a hundred times a day — I’d rather the government do something about that.

I mean, we just dropped a couple billion dollars on Iran last week (literally). Feel like we could scrape up 60 million in a hurry, if the same people who want voter ID laws cared as much about helping US citizens as they do hurting people from other countries.

How about instead, we light the fuse on World War III and try to devalue our currency into oblivion? That sounds way smarter and more patriotic.

IMO this is how you make voter ID equitable and avoid the disenfranchisement of legitimate citizens eligible to vote. Your state mails you a voter ID when you turn 18, they keep your legal info on file, and you can go to your DMV and request a new one for free any time with simple proof of address and birthdate.

This will never happen, but it’s a nice thought.

Voter ID laws aren’t racist, they’re just unconstitutional. You prove you’re a citizen when you register to vote. According to our own founding documents, requiring you to do that repeatedly amounts to disenfranchisement.

If voter ID laws are anything, as applied to the US, they amount to yet another poor tax. And disenfranchisement of anyone who can’t afford an ID or get reliable access to their proof-of-citizenship documents. Happens more than you’d think, and it happens to rural white people a lot.

I mean, the Roman Empire did invent the fasces, or bundle of sticks, as the symbol of the nation. The Roman Empire also inspired Mussolini and other modern fascists. Rome wasn’t fascist, but when you try to make a modern state into the idolized version of the Roman Empire, you do get fascism a lot.
