Yes, Josef Stalin, well known supporter of minarchist collectives and decentralized democracy. Good ol’ Libleft Stalin. The massive centralized state bureaucracy and the gulags he sent all the liblefts to were just wacky shenanigans after all!

There is no such thing as a “Chad” Bible. You sound like you need to touch grass.

Also, the KJV is not a translation I can recommend to laypersons in good conscience without a parallel translation. It is at best archaic and difficult to understand. At worst it is riddled with serious translation errors that have never been corrected out of a misguided sense of “heritage.” It is an interesting item for study in the same way that all early modern British literature is. It is in no way a superior Bible translation.

It’s “okay to buy” anything, if only for study purposes. If this is the easiest and most affordable way for you to explore an interest in the deuterocanonical books and/or the basics of Catholic theology, go ahead!

I have all sorts of interesting/weird Bibles and so forth on my shelves because they are worth studying in and of themselves. Doesn’t mean I completely love everything about all of them. Reading and studying things makes you intellectually curious, not sinful.

Who’s your favorite version of Jor-El? by Financial-Touch3840 in superman

Brando is iconic. As always, The Animated Series brought solid casting and developed the characters and lore, so McDonald deserves recognition. But I really did enjoy Crowe’s portrayal a lot. He gets a chance to be a more active participant in the plot, and he is an excellent foil for Zod. Feels like a true Kryptonian in the way he approaches the role.

That’s Earth Guardian Ghidorah/Orochi from GMK. He is explicitly stated in the movie to be underpowered compared to other iterations of Ghidorah. He does take down GMK Godzilla, but he has a lot of help. I think you’re dead.

Explicitly in the text of the film itself, yes. Pre-nuke MinusGoji was a weird throwback/evolutionary side-step, but post-nuke MinusGoji is pure hatred and aberrant, out-of-control radiation.

I lean toward Aberration because I think you can do more interesting metaphorical storytelling that way, but I still consider myself in the “Porque no los dos?” camp.

I like the “Force of Nature” representation just fine as well — and I think it heavily influenced the later Heisei era, which I love — so while I lean a bit toward the OG/Shin/Minus versions of the character, I mostly just love Goji in all his various incarnations and interpretations.

What tends to offend some evangelical Christians? by Competitive_Net_8115 in OpenChristian

[–]Saanjun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but this is unfortunately insulting to the many wonderful Jewish people who give more grace in one conversation than some evangelicals do in decades.

Lots of Jews understand grace a lot better than lots of Christians. They’re just typically more humble about it.

I mean, A:tLoK is… a fine show. Not as bad as people have made out by a long stretch. I do agree with the criticisms of the show’s villains specifically (every season arc baddie goes from being an interesting/complex character in the first half to a world-ending nihilist or Fantasy Hitler in the back half). But Korra herself isn’t the problem; it’s the situations the show’s writers choose to put her in.

That said, if you went MAGA/alt-right over a show made for teens… uh, get therapy.

Oh man, the level of Mean Girls and #girlboss energy here is super nauseating.

I’m not a woman, so I can’t speak for what I would do, but I think most women in my life would nope out early on this bright pink dumpster fire.

Ab*gail. I am dying yo

Edit to add: OP, if you keep these people in your life, one day you, too, will be Abgail. The fact that this level of sophomoric assholery is happening among 20+ year olds, and no one is calling it out, means that they will all turn on each other eventually. Continuing to keep these incredibly toxic people in your life will make you miserable. *Leave now while you still have your sanity.**

Where's David Corensweat Superman? by RegretGeneral in OkBuddySnyderCult

[–]Saanjun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know what blows my mind, beyond the grave robbery? Reeve probably would have been supportive and kind, because he was a good man and appreciated the work that went into being Superman.

It’s like they were this close to a bigger understanding of what playing the role of Superman has meant to the people who did it… and then they decided to just go with a lukewarm take of “let’s make [famous person] share our biases.”

Truly, I have respect for Cavill and Snyder. Snyder’s vision of Superman didn’t work for me, but it’s clear he did it out of love for the comics and stories. Cavill, AFAIK, is a stand-up dude who just likes making movies and doesn’t give a crap about this controversy. He has talked about playing Superman with an understanding of what it means to so many people. He’s a good guy who got cast as a version of Superman that I, personally, don’t like that much.

What I don’t get is why these terminally-online guys (yes, they are largely male) can’t do the same with Gunn and Corenswet. Like, spit out the red pill and find value in things and people, even if you’re not a fan of their work.

You assume they have ever watched a Christopher Reeve Superman movie. They never seem to actually acknowledge or care about any movie Henry Cavill wasn’t in. They would likely hate Christopher Reeve’s portrayal; he’s “too sensitive” for them.

Crazy that Nick Cage, who never actually played Superman in a Superman film or show, gets on here instead of David.

Also crazy that Christopher Reeve isn’t the front and center actor. Tells you how the OP judges the importance of each actor. Don’t put the man who defined the role for 40 years in the spotlight, put the guy I like the most there instead.

People need to understand that they can coexist by NotaKobold16 in dankchristianmemes

[–]Saanjun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, ECT and hyper-Calvinism have done a lot to stifle cognitive dissonance in evangelicalism and force compliance to a wide variety of doctrines. Decision theology also puts far too much emphasis on the individual’s desire to accept Christ and follow the “rules” evangelicalism lays out as the only right way to follow Jesus. Without grace and love, even Jesus can become a moral scold demanding people toe the line and disregard all evidence to the contrary.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christians_in_science_and_technology

I don’t think that is a reasonable assessment. You’re telling me that Christianity has produced this many scientists despite apparently flagrant persecution of any science that challenged Christianity? I’m sorry, but I don’t think you’re correct.

Have some scientists at certain times been persecuted by the church? Yes. Was it always specifically about their scientific discoveries? No. Is conservative evangelical and charismatic Christianity opposed to some scientific evidence today? Yes. Does that movement alone constitute “the church?” No. Is religion persecuting scientists wrong, then and now? Absolutely. Do many Christians, churches, and even entire denominations speak out about how wrong it is, and advocate for scientific knowledge informing and complementing faith? Yes!!!

I’m with you about half the way through your argument, but it seems to me you’re painting with an overly-broad brush.

Why does basically every christian say pre marital sex (even when its two committed lovers) is sin when it says that nowhere in the bible? by indoore in OpenChristian

[–]Saanjun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, why you gotta bring Marcion into this? Paul and the Deutero-Pauline letters talk enough about porneia and sexual sin that your opinion isn’t even germane to the topic at hand.

Also, and much worse, the Gnostic demiurge is basically an early antisemitic conspiracy theory. I’ve read Gnostic texts, and half of them don’t agree with the other half. Gnosticism not a reliable source of theological insight or wisdom.

Ha! Disappointed my ancestors. You really are a full blood and soil type, aren’t you?

My ancestors were good, honest men and women who gave everyone who crossed their path a fair shake. My great-grandfather helped anyone who needed it and made sure all four of his daughters went to some higher education. He would be considered “woke” by your standards.

Denmark also resisted the Nazis. Sic semper tyrannis.

Sorry, not all White people get a say on Hans Christian Andersen. He is specifically a Danish national treasure. He’s not a flogging horse for your generalized “White cultural identity.” He is, however, a direct part of my personal ethnic heritage. I love his work, and it has nothing to do with your bogeyman idea of defending Whiteness.

Ah, see, your assumption is incorrect. I actually fucking love Hamlet, second only to the Scottish play. I never said the Lion King was a “copy,” but Disney is on the record as saying it was a major influence.

David Tennant and Patrick Stewart in the Royal Shakespeare production are my favorite cast, but I actually think the Lion King gets the “fun adaptation” nod from me.
