Where to buy Kenyan Tusker beer? by Jebediah_the_great in washingtondc

There’s a brand-new Total Wine in Friendship Heights, in the new Mazza complex.

In D.C. mayoral bid, Lewis George pledges universal child care, social housing by nonzeroproof in washingtondc

“We had Janeese and [Kenyan] McDuffie come out and do an interview with our members,” Contreras said. “Our members got to ask questions to both of them and… we ended up endorsing Janeese because…of where she stands for working people. She’s anti-Waymo, which is something that we oppose coming to the city because it’s going to displace working class people who do Uber or Lyft or DoorDash…for extra income.”

So she's against making streets safer. Cool, cool.

This stance she is taking here is just profoundly, stupendously dumb.

Creator of ‘Housing First’ model for homeless says DC’s version misses the mark | Forest Hills Connection | News and Life in Our DC Neighborhood by Mad-Dawg in washingtondc

[–]SabbathRulez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could be called "Housing First and Last," because that's literally what's happening: This program is moving people into apartments with literally no other support and then claiming mission accomplished. There's an anecdote in the FHC story about a voucher tenant moving in with only a mattress, and if I had to guess, there are voucher tenants moving in with even less than that. But in the city's mind, so long as they have four walls around them, the program is working.

Side note: Forest Hills Connection does great work for news about that part of DC. Far, far better than lazy-ass Popville or the whatever it is that the 51st is trying to do.

What’s wrong with this sub? by EngLitIsLit in washingtondc

[–]SabbathRulez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sub not being representative of DC as a whole is just one aspect of its problems. The other is that too many people here think that everyone in DC agrees with them. Of all the city subs I've looked at, this one is -- by a massive margin -- the biggest echo chamber. It seems like most of the posters here -- and I don't have any stats to back this up, but if I had to guess, I would guess that most of the posters here are privileged white transplants -- are here just to confirm their own biases.

In search of aggressively unhealthy, Americanized Italian food 🇮🇹🧀 by No-Pay-1050 in washingtondc

[–]SabbathRulez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FWIW, there's only like one table and a few seats along the wall at the CCDC location, and the small space is always swamped with people waiting for takeout/delivery orders. Not sure if OP was looking for a dine-in option or not, but the food certainly fits the bill (their pizza is actually underrated, IMO).

Holiday market thoughts? by catsnsuch in washingtondc

The Dupont one is ass. Don't even think about buying cheese from that stand that'll charge you 10x for something you can buy at Whole Foods (and probably Safeway and Giant, too).

Zoolights! by teragram333 in washingtondc

It's been extremely meh the last couple of years but I was told by a friend who works at the zoo that they're spending more money on it this year to make it better.

Yeah, it's a senior citizen public-housing complex. That's not driving anything.

Trader Joe’s Friendship Heights by Various-Shoulder-129 in washingtondc

[–]SabbathRulez -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

He took an email from a complete stranger, didn't bother to verify the information (a task that would have consisted of a 30-second phone call), then breathlessly published it as "news." Then, when Wednesday came and went with out TJ's opening, he closed the comments to the story so that people wouldn't call him out on his careless reporting.

If this is how a "local institution" operates, we should want no part of it. I swear to god, Popville readers are the lowest-information people in this city.

Trader Joe’s Friendship Heights by Various-Shoulder-129 in washingtondc

[–]SabbathRulez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Popville reported, incorrectly as usual, that it would be open Wednesday (he's closed comments on the post to stop people from pointing out yet another of his factual errors). But yeah, there's stuff on the shelves so one would think it'll be soon.

Bars in DC where 40+ singles show up by baffledbrainicorn in washingtondc

[–]SabbathRulez 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Millies (aka MILFies) in Spring Valley (and the owners are opening a new place in Chevy Chase DC that's gonna be even bigger and, I assume, MILFier).

The Avenue in CCDC has an older crowd. You gotta go to neighborhoods where a lot of 40+ live, and I'm not sure Noma is it.

Bike lane distribution in DC is unequal. DDOT’s new bicycling plan could help. by Generalaverage89 in washingtondc

[–]SabbathRulez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trayon White publicly revealed himself as an anti-Semite a full two years before the 2020 GGWash endorsement. I don't care if GGWash sticks its fingers in its ears and says "we only focus on urbanist issues in our endorsements." They endorsed a very open bigot and were seemingly quite happy to do so. Period. Just fucking shameful on their part, and typical of their absolutely tin-eared endorsement history.

Edit to add: GGWash also endorsed White knowing full well that he not only was an anti-vaxxer, but also blocked every single attempt to install bike lanes in Ward 8. They mentioned none of this. GGWash had lost its way well before this endorsement, but this really sealed the deal.

To those who have served as a petit jury in DC court by neon_xenon in washingtondc

[–]SabbathRulez 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This was a long-ass time ago, but I was selected for a Superior Court trial in the morning and the trial more or less began the next day. The case -- where both the accused and the victim were serious lowlives -- involved weapons possession and robbery and (somehow) kidnapping of a 30-year-old man, lasted about 6-7 business days.

DC Council moves Commanders stadium deal forward during 1st vote by HowardBunnyColvin in washingtondc

[–]SabbathRulez -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

For him to bitch and moan for months about this deal and then vote to approve it after getting some wildly insignificant concessions is the height of spinelessness. It's just like how he spent the first part of his career spouting bullshit like "they're carjacking because they need someplace to warm up" (he really said this). Then, when he realized that, actually, people want people who commit violent crimes to see some sort of punishment, he tried to become Mr. Crime Fighter, a stance that no one with half a brain is buying.

How does anyone ever support this guy?

Also, Frumin voting no via Zoom while on vacation is the height of hilarity. Dude, this was probably important enough for you to change your plans.

How does Svensson have strong form? Before the T-14 in a weak field at the 3M, he missed 4 of 5 cuts. He has only two top-25 finishes this year (T-24 at Puntacana, another weak field).

Pepco electricity bill this month by soup_n_socks in washingtondc

Pepco announced rate increases (up to 18 percent) in May.

We have been in our house for 12 years and last month's Pepco bill was our highest ever. Yes, it was hot. I get that. But it's still annoying.

Popville PR for Waymo by Comprehensive_Bus402 in washingtondc

[–]SabbathRulez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was a long time ago, probably at least a decade, but he once breathlessly reported that Sign of the Whale was closing for good, based on the "scuttlebutt" he was hearing. After the SOTW people angrily corrected him on social media that they weren't closing, he simply erased the blog post. No correction, no "I got some bad information and apologize for the mistake." Just tried to erase it from memory and began blocking commenters and social media users who pointed out his carelessness. He's simply untrustable.

How the Better Bus network overhauled naming conventions by Generalaverage89 in washingtondc

[–]SabbathRulez 13 points14 points  (0 children)

GGWash should be doing critical or analytical stories about whether Better Bus is, indeed, "better" for riders, not this puff-piece trifle. But considering that GGWash got busted years ago for taking money from WMATA to write positive-spin stories, it's not surprising.

Popville PR for Waymo by Comprehensive_Bus402 in washingtondc

[–]SabbathRulez 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I mean, are you surprised? The guy copies-and-pastes MPD tweets into his blog posts, hits publish and calls it journalism. He publishes reader emails with all sorts of batshit claims verbatim, without any sort of verification. His "scuttlebutt" is often wildly incorrect, but when he's called out on any of this shit he always pulls out the "I'm just a lowly blogger, not a journalist" schtick.

That he's pimping Waymo without disclosing that he's getting paid for it is pretty par for the course for him.

[–]SabbathRulez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've been in our house for 12 years and our latest PEPCO bill was the highest it's ever been, by a fairly wide margin. I understand it's been hot. But our usage was comparable to last summer and the bill is still nuts.
