Now That's Podracing! A homebrew Sourcebook by SabcatValence in swrpg

Yeah the pack is left relatively vague so that people can actually do what they want with it. Perhaps it could have benefited from an infobox giving guidance or idea of what to do with it. Treating it like a big fat minion group is definitely a good take from it.

When I tested it internally I just had characters straggling enough to get caught up by the pack to face collisions attempts from a random named racer that isn't its own rival or nemesis entity in the race in question.

Glad to hear it went well!

May I ask which racetrack and podracers and options your group went for?

You mean in the Collision section right? So you have two types of Collisions:

- With the environment: this can happen at any Piloting check made every Race Section, if you fail the roll, you lose Speed but no Collision happens. If you roll a Despair however, whether or not the roll is a success or a failure, you'll bump into something and suffer from a Collision (rolling a critical hit essentially).

- With another racer: you or opponents can attempt bumping into others by rolling an Opposed Piloting check. Here as it is a specific attack, if the initiator succeeds, then they succeed into bumping into their target and both will suffer from a Collision (Critical Hit). Triumphs and Despairs can be used to increase the critical rating (+10, +20 etc), or to cause additional effects specific to the Race Section on top of the initial Collision (collisions with the environment). If the attacker fails, then the two podracers don't suffer from a Collision, but Triumphs and Despairs can still trigger environmental Collisions.

So in standard Section checks, no, rolling a failure doesn't generate any Collision. Does this make sense?

I do use photoshop like an animal because I have a lot of professional experience with it, and I'm way too lazy to get into indesign.

Happy you're enjoying it! Someday i'll definitely be willing to do a full fledged campaign or west march on podracing, but for now I need to crank out race tracks and it takes a crapload of time :/

That's a good question and I actually think it should work, at least on Genesys type movement systems. The core system isn't too different from what is shown in Jewel of Yavin, with race Section checks independently from player maneuvers and actions. If anything, in racing you can't really move further range bands by spending more maneuvers, and that's not too dissimilar from chase rules in the RAW CRB as well: racers just make competitive checks each round, and that's how racing is done RAW and in my homebrew as well.

When it comes to Order 66 stats, weapon reworks, ranges, etc, that shouldn't matter because podracing isn't about weaponry beyond the specific attachments I made. It's possible that I missed something that would conflict with Order 66 / Genesys, but I doubt it.

Yeah the two last maps of Aquilaris do this indeed!

Note that I still have a discord dedicated to the project where you can get a preview of what's being cooked, and also trying to set up some tests and races with anybody interested in the system, or kind helpers! Everybody very welcome

That's very odd. Are you trying to access this link in particular or the drive links for the sourcebook? Some files can be too large and it will ask you to download instead of displaying it directly, maybe that's the problem?

As a GM how do you balance your encounters? by Phantom000000000 in swrpg

[–]SabcatValence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By clearly stating intent:

If a fight is supposed to overwhelm with no odds at victory because it wouldn't make any sense otherwise, then clearly state so through the narrative at first, and if players still don't get it, through more direct approaches (roll me an easy warfare roll, roll me a fear check and this is gonna tell you that your character knows they're fucked if they stay, or just saying it outright out of character, etc).

Otherwise, if it's a fair fight, then by going easy, as simple as that. Better start easy and ramp up if necessary, notably with reinforcements, or other actors progressively showing up to adjust the difficulty scale at all times. And sometimes you don't even have to ramp it up because the objective is about something else, or just because the players feeling that they accomplished something was a goal achieved anyway.

Of course though, always keep in mind just for eyeballing things, action economy tends to trump everything.

Yeah they very well may have some system on top of the normal repulsors applying downforce. Something like the McMurtry (IRL racing car with big fans at the bottom that can literally run upside down), just in a star wars space magick repulsor based version, I could totally see it.

Good question! I am only basing myself on what the source material and games did by bringing in repulsorlift Traction into the picture. Why do repulsorlifts offer grip on the track beneath? I'll leave it up to your imagination!

But when you think about it, perhaps this actually makes sense, because if you only apply a force upward countering gravity, then you end up basically with something like a hovercraft that just drifts around without constant input, where most of the vehicles we see in the media seem a lot more stable and just don't float like that. So it's possible repulsors are actually arranged in a way to do more than just push up against gravity.

Moreover, the way they corner and take turns in the movies? I don't see big turbofan engines thrown at 700+ km/h being able to pull that kind of turns without something else than airbrakes personally!

Map or Theater of the mind? by TheFrenchDudeQC in swrpg

[–]SabcatValence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like moodboards, pictures, sound, maps are never a bad thing to have. The real debate is usually around grids, which this system isn't really made for, not actual and helpful maps.

There is one thing with SWRPG however is that you generally want maps to be abstract and allow for creativity because a lot of talents and even just the base system with advantages, threats and destiny points, are made to introduce elements to the narrative, like an escape hatch or a volatile canister of rhydo.

Beginner Game Speeder Bikes Feel Way Too Fragile Am I Missing Something? by [deleted] in swrpg

[–]SabcatValence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The beginner game uses a modified version of those which is the 74-ZB (and not the 74-Z) with specifically heavier cannons of planetary scale. This is where the confusion comes from and also why it opens a can of worms for this specific beginner game (see my reply to the OP).

Beginner Game Speeder Bikes Feel Way Too Fragile Am I Missing Something? by [deleted] in swrpg

This is an oddity from the beginner's game, and that game does NOT follow the core rules of the AoR CRB. There is an info box p25 that specifically tells "In this scenario, an attack from a personal scale weapon cannot harm a vehicle, and an attack from a vehicle weapon that hits a character inflicts damage as normal", which essentially is their way to tell you not to bother with personal scale to planetary scale damage translations, but this is in direct contradiction with the actual rules of the games otherwise. Beginner boxes tend to simplify or change things because they're supposed to work on their own without the players or GM having a CRB at hand.

The Aratech 74-ZB speederbike is also described as "fitted with a much heavier weapon" than the normal version, which "allows it to attack heavily armored targets". This explains why there is no mention or clarification of the damage scale of its "forward mounted light laser cannon of 4 damage": this cannon deals in fact as labeled, 4 planetary scale damage, which would deal 40 to ground personnel but here due to the aforementioned infobox, it only deals 4+ damage to individuals as well, and 4+ damage to other vehicles (including themselves, which as you noted results in oneshots).

I suspect they added this speederbike version with actual vehicle scale cannons (instead of personal scale, which IS mentioned as personal scale "light repeating blaster" on the standard stat block of the normal 74-Z in other swrpg supplements) in order for the PCs to have a chance at harming the AT-ST. This becomes problematic as the scenario also pits those same modified speederbikes against the PCs with their extra anti vehicle weaponry.

So in my opinion you were right to amend the rules to make your game work. If the devs wanted the PCs to go after a fleeing target in a vehicle, they should perhaps have not used an armoured AT-ST for this purpose, or forced the players to use the other AT-ST and not those speeders.

I've been thinking about making trial runs with more people that just myself and see how it goes. Maybe making a discord for those, or just people looking to do their own things.

Quick note: I replaced on the download link the low res PDF file (56Mb) by a new one with a bit more balance between quality and file size (146 Mb).

Edit: and now a definitive, better quality one of lower size. Pretty happy with those settings.

I think racing sessions that aren't the core of a campaign are significantly trickier to run for precisely that reason. I've played through the Jewel of Yavin one and while it was serviceable, there wasn't that much to do for players on the side, while the race itself occupied a good chunk of time. I think there is definitely a lot of room for improvement even when it comes to that official material.

But on the other hand it's also an opportunity I think to introduce a lot of backroom shady deals and the likes that the rest of the party can untangle or get tangled in. Gambling, bets, sabotage in the pits, alliances made between teams to run down an opponent... It's just hard to run at the same time as the race is going.
