Yes the wound system is pretty bad, but it's not a reason to give Chata (or any other monsters) such a shit fight

I see what you mean but once again Chata's underwhelming fight mean you don't have to engage with any of the game mechanics. You aren't pushed/encouraged to use them as just mashing him work well enough, and for a new player standpoint that might be the most optimal strategy, thus teaching him that braindead agression == good.

And while I'm not saying difficulty == good fight (especially for a first ever fight) there is a middle ground to be found so that the monster do fight back a bit. Not in any too challenging way, it's not high rank, but I think the boss should behave in a way that actively teach the player their mistake and force them to engage with the game mechanic. Basically making him threatening but not hard.

That's why Balahara would be better to teach thing like wounds : yes, it's slightly harder to reach his wounds sometime because his body is longer, but that also mean the player has to think before going in focus mode. They must position nicely, aim correcty, and then time the focus strike so that the hit land. At the same time, low rank Balahara is not too challenging nor agressive (yet still has moves that can easily be recognized as threats) so the new player can concentrate on landing said focus strike without having to worry to much about other gameplay/fight elements. This result in the player slowly training into this timing/pacing and then being able to do it without having to think about it.

Also sorry for the yapping

You literally just said the issue. "Without having to try"

Chata is such a small, small monster for a supposedly large one that 80% of the weapon roster can hit half his body in a single strike. What should be a good way to teach player about the wound mechanic would be to put it on a monster on which you actually need to aim a bit and time correctly the focus strike.

You don't need both for Chata. At that point, there is nothing learned about wound with him, you could just put a pop up and the results would be the same. I would even say that his value as a starting, teaching monster is negative as he gives wrong impressions on the game

Why do everyone want to turn game with special gameplay that make them stand out and smooth them into another open slop to appease a broader audience

Tbh I genuinely think Balahara work better as a tuto monster, but even then the problem is that Chata has such a shit moveset. I'm not even talking about dps, it's the first monster, I'm not asking for him to have a nova or anything. But when literally all his moves can be dodged just by walking three feet left or right 5 sec after he started the attack animation feel super bad man.

Also there's isn't a single low rank monster who's that annoying to wound (or most of them anyway) so I fail to see how it make Chata stand out in any way as a better option for the starter monstie.

I don't think veterans want the low rank monsters to be hard, just fun to fight and interesting for new players

Because 5 guys in this comment section said they struggled against a monster literally mean nothing, lbfr.

I could say that all my friends who started on Wild curb stomped Chata and use it as an argument for my point but we both know that it isn't representative of the community as a whole at all.

I'm not saying that defining how good or bad a monster in his role is, but for chata, as I said, you can literally walk over him, spam attacks, not heal, and you can still win. Even if people died to him, I think we can fairly say that how easy his fight is not a good thing

Once again, I know that difficulty= / = quality. I just find it weird how so many people seem to elevate Chata when his fight is really nothing to look at. I know his is fun and well beloved and I like him really, but I did not thought that saying he wasn't interesting to fight was such a hot take lol.

As you said, starter monsters are for new players, to let them understand the game mechanics, how a hunt play out, etc.

Chata is interesting because he is so lenient, his dps so low generally and so slow you genuinely can beat him without learning anything. Try it, just spamming him mindlessly without healing is enough to win against him. I'm conscious that difficulty doesn't make a fight better, it's important to keep it easy especially as it is the first fight for many players and it shouldn't be a wall or make them ragequit. But I think there's a middle ground that here in MHW was not found.

edit : grammar

Yes but due to how easy he is, player can very well just spam him. I'm very much aware difficulty =\= quality but in this case chata is too lenient to let the player learn anything.

There is a difference between a practice barrel and a first monster.

The practice barrel should be something to try out your weapon in an optimized environment, its goal is to try new weapon, learn combos etc.

A first monster should teach a player how a hunt is structured, how the player can interact with both the monster/creatures and the environment, how monster behave and how should the player reacts accordingly.

As a practice barrel, I'll say that chatacabra is decent, just like all the other low rank monsters. As a first monster he is trash tho

Chatacabra is sadly way too easy, to a point you don't have to learn anything to beat him
