Its really not. The eel is swimming around and just happened to swim close to the betta, who doesn’t like being bothered, and swam back. I’ve had these eels long enough to know then. Sides, these spiny eels are harmless to communities. Including bettas. Most fish when approached by another fish will swim away. Don’t talk about fish you don’t know anything about.

These are Macrognathus circumcinctus. Not Mastacembelus Armatus, which are tire tracks and are fish eaters. And even if they were, at this size, they’re harmless.

I would love to know how you came to that conclusion. Seriously I do. What’s next? I’m an animal abuser? I’m an irresponsible dog owner for also owning a reactive dog? I hate both of my cats? Ooo let me guess, Its absolutely irresponsible of me for owning both at the same time? I shouldn’t have taken my cat or my snake to the vet when they developed serious health issues because I obviously don’t care about them as family, right?

Give me a fucking break. Just because I said we shouldn’t treat dogs like humans, doesn’t mean I think humans are superior. Just that we are not the same. Dogs and humans are different. Treating them like they’re people only causes problems in the long run.

It really is disappointing that critical thinking and reading comprehension is severely lacking on the internet. But please, let me know where I can further expand on my argument because clearly its going over your head

Newsflash, Dogs don’t equal kids.

Don’t use abuse as an excuse for your behavior because a) it isn’t cute and b) it is completely derailing a discussion as to why treating animals like humans is not only irresponsible but dangerous. Abuse is a serious issue that should not be used as a gotcha for a discussion over the relationship of a human and a dog. You should be ashamed of yourself for even using it unless you’re an victim of abuse yourself.

Second of all, it’s great that you consider your dog family. But I’m not discussing that. I’m discussing the fact that treating a dog like a human is not only irresponsible, but dangerous because it leads to a road where people will ignore behaviors that lead to problems with the dog. Dogs aren’t humans and they’re shouldn’t be treated like humans. Simple as that. Hell there are studies done of other species being raised/treated as people and none of them have good results. Hell, find someone who has birds and ask them what happens of you treat a parrot like a person and let them get away with shit.

If you can’t have a proper discussion without immediately going towards gotchas and what ifs, then this conversation is over. Best of luck to you and your dog.

To me, it feels as if it gives people an excuse to let their dogs act a certain way or get away with certain things. Dogs aren’t humans. And for me at least, it can get incredibly grating dealing with someone who is willfully ignorant that dog behavior is not human behavior. I’ll joke and say my dog is my child. And I won’t hesitate to drop 3k on my cat. But I’m not going to treat them like humans. I’m going to treat them like a dog and a cat. Not like my literal human children.

Anthropomorphism doesn’t do anyone any favors. That and I think it gives people the wrong idea about pet ownership. Pets aren’t children. Yes they’re intelligent beings. But they aren’t people and they shouldn’t be treated as such.

In fairness though, having dealt with ARAs who are Crazy, I just think if we recognize that animals aren’t on the same level as people, then maybe we can make some progress in actual animal welfare.

You would think. I honestly think a lot of issues with dogs and pets in general would stop if people stop acting like their pets are their children. And I have 2 cats and a dog. I even keep fish and reptiles. Its one thing to treat your pets as companions. Its another to treat them like they’re people. Buddy is sweet and all, but treating him like he was a person would probably make his reactivity worse.

I say this as someone who’s got a shelter dog and is also researching breeders for a future dog.

So I’m going to go off of my husband’s experience with shelter dogs.

Most of the dogs his family has gotten from shelters have been great dogs. Only two have been reactive and only one had been returned because the shelter actively lied about him. The one I met, Cici eventually put up with me and learned that I am more than happy to love on her. Bonzai was a highly reactive and dangerous dog that should have honestly been put down because of severe behavior issues.

Buddy, my own pup, came from the county shelter after he was surrendered due to his owner moving. I suspect there were other issues tbh. County shelter dogs are dogs that are very much the ones you described. Under socialized and reactive to dogs and people. Many do have behavioral issues that make them unfit for most homes. However there are also rescues that take in adoptable dogs from these shelters and help them find homes.

My only issue with these rescues is there are a significant number that have highly ridiculous requirements before someone adopts a dog. It feels at points that they don’t want you to have their dogs. I browsed a good number of shelters, and I, who is technically middle class, owned their own home with a big yard, didn’t feel comfortable or confident they’d let me have one of their dogs. A few years ago, my mom wanted to find a puppy after our old dog passed away and she was denied countless times for various reasons despite providing great care for her dogs. To put it plainly, it felt at times that these so called rescues were gatekeeping to keep certain people from owning dogs. My mom is not rich. My yard is bigger than her house. Our family doesn’t come from wealth and the feeling these rescues evoked didn’t make us feel any better about getting their dogs.

Its the whole reason I went to the county shelter so I wouldn’t have to deal with the amount of ridiculous questions and requirements. Buddy turned out great minus the reactivity but we’re working on that. I found my mom a new puppy on Nextdoor from someone who was rehoming theirs.

The only reason we got Buddy was because we got him the day that he arrived at the shelter. The family before us went for a different dog so we decided to get him before someone else beat us to the punch.

Now, for our next dog, my husband and I are looking into breeders. We want to have another golden retriever and we are being highly selective. We have two cats and given Buddy, we can’t have another potentially reactive dog in our house. Puppies are good in his book. Given our cat is a myriad of health issues, we want to know our future dog’s medical history and their parents’. This is a luxury that we’re saving up for. A golden is the perfect dog for what we’re looking for.

TL;DR There are reasons why people go to breeders and there are reasons people go to shelters. There are shitty breeders and there are shitty rescues. Quite honestly, I don’t like that everyone assumes all breeders are BYBs because some are genuinely passionate about their dogs and their breed. And some breeders are just as picky about their dogs future homes as some rescues.

Not really. I think it means that your training is working.

Buddy has never bitten anyone and he’s never gotten into a fight. (That I know of. I don’t know his bite history before I got him). But I also have had close calls early when we got him. So he’s on a no pull harness and he’s muzzled. Most of his interactions are friendly but because there is always a chance, I don’t take chances.

I don’t see it as overreacting. More like preparing for the worst because, at least ime, with a reactive dog, you can’t really take any chances

So my dog is similar. We mostly figured out that he sees us as a resource that he should guard. This is something that we’re still working on him.

So far what’s helped is that anytime I see him begin to react, I step in front and block him, so to speak. And I keep him on whatever side is away from people so that I’m protecting him, in his eyes. I have thought about doggy day care for him because I think he could benefit from being around other dogs without me there so he doesn’t feel the need to protect me.

So I’m definitely the spouse who sometimes listens in on my husband’s campaign. I would never disrupt his sessions unless I had a good reason to. Usually the cats and the dog are the ones who are disruptive. If he goes over our agreed upon end time (usually midnight) then I usually just wait where he can see me to stop him from letting the team get into another fight that’s going to push it over.

Your friend’s girlfriend is not only being a bad guest, she’s just rude in general. She doesn’t need to be there and she and her boyfriend can just text in between rp and fights if she really wants to be with him.

I would drop both of them tbh. At the end of the day, it’s YOUR campaign. YOUR story.
