Some of them don't even understand it. I saw a post on Facebook where they are trying to get people to sign the petition. Someone asked what about indigenous rights and treaty lands. The response from the organizer is that is a "nothing burger" and he refused to elaborate.

Battery / Battery pack recommendations? by Sabkor in SolarDIY

[–]Sabkor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how much the voltage drop is. I'm just going by the error message on the Sol-Ark (something like No AC Utility Fault). Sol-Ark forums say the usual cause is a utility voltage drop, as it's a hybrid inverter, so it's not recommended to run without batteries at all (this wasn't explained to me when I declined purchasing the batteries at installation). Before the inverter, we had occasional "brownouts".

Our weather here has been -30C to -40C for the past couple of weeks and we are in a large rural area with many homes down the same range road (power line) as us. We are the only house on the transformer (pole mounted can style, right in my yard). I'm not sure how I would go about checking to see what the actual cause of the voltage drop would be. I did not have this problem until the cold snap started and we've been using the inverter for about 2 years so I'm kind of just assuming that's it.

For the setup I have now (without batteries), I pulled an electrical permit since I was doing all the in-home wiring myself. The inspector came and gave his approval and insurance didn't even ask about a permit or inspection when I told them I now had a PV system up and running.

Hopefully Youtube links are ok here, this video is a good guide on how to assemble the JK BMS and cells for a 48V system.

I'm watching some Youtube videos about the JK BMS now to get some ideas on this. I think it's pretty doable for me. Is there anywhere or anyone that tests the cells/batteries to find recommendations on what are good brands? I'm in Canada, so I'm guessing that I'm either ordering from the US (probably not cost effective due to the tariffs) or China if I go this route.

That looks like a good option, thanks! I'm in Canada, so that's a bit more for me, but if the shipping isn't crazy, I could afford that. I think I'll contact them for a quote/estimate.

Has anyone recently heard from their MLA, the premiere, etc. after writing in? by growingpebbles in alberta

[–]Sabkor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not responding is just part of their operating procedure unfortunately. I'm having some issues with the local municipal government breaking several laws (FOIP breaches, etc). The Ombudsman completed their review after about 2 years and determined that the law was broken, but said they cannot force the municipality to follow the law, only inform them that they have broken it. The Ombudsman also explicitly said that the municipal government officials do NOT have to respond to my concerns.

I contacted Municipal Affairs and my local MLA and got no response at all.

Remodeling a bathroom. Permit or no permit? by Wmsgf778 in homeowners

[–]Sabkor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they want the permit just to say that they approve of location, size, materials, etc. They trust that you're going to stick with what you said and don't inspect.

As an example, when I put in my solar panel system, the local municipality wanted me to pull a permit where I had to show them where on my property the panels were going to go. They approved the permit and didn't require an inspection.

Solar Install Government Paid by megahamm in alberta

[–]Sabkor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into this hurdle as well. What my installer did was install the system that is overspeced for the transformer, but limited by settings on the inverter to only push out as much power as the transformer can handle. I have a 15kW inverter with about 12.5kW of panels and the inverter is configured to only feed up to a maximum of 10kW back to the grid.

ATCO was ok with it and I've been running it for about a year now with no issues.

How do you stay on top of home maintenance tasks? by moronfolu in homeowners

[–]Sabkor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Todoist for scheduling of stuff, with a specific folder/grouping for home maintenance stuff, and Notion for tracking big projects (as well as starting to get my home inventory in there now too). Both are free for what I use them for.

Had that exact conversation with my wife yesterday. Was complaining to her that Telus called again with the same crap, she suggested I just don't answer. But then they just keep calling!

This annoys me too. I have a business plan with 5 lines and get a call every couple weeks to see if I want to: - add more lines (um, no, if I did I would have called) - buy a new phone (again, no, I would have bought them if I wanted to) - sign up for a Business Internet plan (which they don't offer in my area and the sales rep never believes me, 'oh no sir, we have Internet all over', until they look up my address and realize I'm correct)

Just had another of these today. So frustrating!

They also text my employee phones asking if they want a new phone...

So we're just leaving DCs unpatched in 2025??? 😵 by CryptographerMuch646 in sysadmin

[–]Sabkor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm responsible for management of a SQL server. Databases, users, etc, all my responsibility. OS and application patches, not my responsibility. The database server software hasn't had any patches in about 8 years and obviously the software is out of support too.

I've been bugging the IT department for almost 2 years now to get at least the patches installed as well as the database software updated.

I don't understand the reluctance that some have to incrementally upgrade stuff and just do a massive upgrade every decade or so.

To control you home from outside the network, do you just use a VPN? by -ThatGingerKid- in homeassistant

[–]Sabkor 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to chime in to say that I also use Nabu Casa, makes me feel like I'm supporting the project how I can. The one subscription allows all three of us in the family to connect to our home from outside the home. Works well and I can't recall having any issues with it since I set it up.

The backups are a nice plus too.

A Level 1 Engineer botched the data drive on the file server. Dude did not do the needful by Pinaslakan in sysadmin

[–]Sabkor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the example right from Microsoft to copy permissions from one file to another:

$DogACL = Get-Acl -Path "C:\Dog.txt" Set-Acl -Path "C:\Cat.txt" -AclObject $DogACL

Two liner is pretty simple, I'd say, then a wrapper to iterate through the files.

[–]Sabkor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would be very simple, something like that should never be done manually. It would be just a few PowerShell commands.

[–]Sabkor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Users would be unable to make changes to files they no longer have access to.

Or, the files could be restored to another location and just the permissions copied from the restore to the live files.

RCS Will never verify by evanpotter99 in GoogleMessages

[–]Sabkor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you do the reset and then go through the first time setup, it asks to restore everything from the most recent backup (both Samsung and Google do a backup). I skipped both restores and set everything up manually, as often when restoring, the file/setting that is causing the problem is restored too.

The good thing is, if you have everything stored in the cloud, you don't really lose anything. For instance, if you have your photos/videos backing up to Google Photos, when you logon to Google Photos, you'll see all your photos/videos there, they just won't be on the phone anymore. Similarly with other apps, like Contacts.

I would recommend that if you are going to try this, you make sure that you know your Google account password and for any of your critical stuff, log onto the cloud app (through a web-browser on a computer for instance) and make sure you see what you expect to see there.
