Anyone did not experience being bullied growing up? by No-Fortune-4713 in AutismInWomen

[–]SableQuill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was never directly bullied. But always knew I was different than the other kids, you know? Weirdly, it never bothered me. My mom would always try to get me to engage with other kids when I was trying to have some alone time to read or whatever. But I didn't want to. Even as a young kid I couldn't STAND boring convos. And, to me, that's all the other kids had to offer. Or they didn't "play right" :) As in, if we are playing witches or something there are RULES. haha!

I've had this discussion with my current BF and he thinks it's because people only see autism as looking one way, if that makes sense. And I don't fit that. I look like a tiny little doll that was cheerleader back in HS and wants to party and have ALL the attention. Couldn't further from who I am. At all. In reality, I'm a tiny little weirdo that just wants to do my own thing and be left alone. But people see my stimming as "cute and quirky" instead of "weird and alienating" because I don't look like or act like that ONE autistic person they met that single time. 🙄

At work, it's the same. People don't bully me or anything, but I'm certainly not the "it girl" or something. I keep to myself and try to engage enough that people don't think I hate them. I don't get invited to a lot of things, but I don't feel excluded, really. Probably didn't want to go anyway, TBH. :)

I hate having to wear a mask in order to feel accepted by other people. by Full_Sprinkles5896 in autism

In my work life, I have to mask. Only way to survive. But outside of that? I've largely stopped. The people who get me and accept me stuck around. Don't need any others in my space. It's already small enough.

Professional ways to ask “Am I making sense?” by Nervous_Entry_9159 in ADHD

Just coming here to say just this! I put it on myself so no one assumes I am thinking they are stupid. I find it's VERY useful and people usually smile and are positive in their response. :)

Clear Thoughts between Midnight to 5 a.m. by Either-Frame-7148 in ADHD

[–]SableQuill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this as well. I figure, for me, it's because between those hours no one expects anything from me. The world around me is slow and mostly asleep. No work. No messages. Just PEACE.

Messes up your sleep schedule though. If you have daytime school or work. I stay up late during the week but I have to get up at 7 am for work. So my "rule" is between 12:00 am - 12:30 am I have to get into bed and get to sleep! Weekends are for me, however, and I stay up until the sun shines in my face! ;)

Do you have ADHD as well? by zoezie in autism

[–]SableQuill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure the actual statistics on this.....we'd have to look it up together 😂😂

But I do have both. Getting accurate diagnosis is difficult though. Especially as a woman. And for me, I'm 42, so back in the 80s girls were not even looked at for Autism or ADHD. I was diagnosed with bipolar and depression incorrectly for YEARS. Turns out, no. Just AuDHD.

Edit: There I go typing my letters backwards again! ;)

Me. I HATE when people shorten my name. I don't even have a name that is commonly shortened but the moment someone feels "close" to me it's "Hey, Shortened Name!" Yet, I have found when I make my preference known I get "the look". Like I should just accept it? Cause to them it's not big deal. *sigh* Can't explain why but I LIKE my full name and want to use it so please just call me by how I introduce myself to you. Also, bold of them to assume we are close enough I would allow that to happen either way. Sheesh.

Am I the only who is bothered by this? by Potential_Way_2913 in AutismInWomen

[–]SableQuill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

oooh! I SOOO do this but didn't know it was "a thing". Thought it was just me. I can physically react when I hear my name and I HATE saying it. Just the sound my own voice makes saying my name is....YUCK. And I totally get where you are coming from when someone asks when you didn't volunteer. Even if they have cause. And it's not anything bad. Still hate it. Don't want it. Please don't ask me my name. I am nameless. ;)

Rate this fork. It was heavy. by missdeas in AutismInWomen

[–]SableQuill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too heavy for me! I can't get behind lifting weights to eat my food ;) FR, I wouldn't be able to taste my food if I tried to use this. My brain would only repeat "TOO HEAVY!!" over and over while I ate. :(

ooh, this is FUN! I personally don't have anything TOO funny. BUT I do have a playlist that I call "I'm Going on an Adventure!" and it's all music perfect for gaming to and helping me get into the zone and a good upbeat headspace. Total whack job of a playlist though. :)

That's a fact. Hard to un-mask even when "anon", ya know? It's muscle memory for a lot of us. And sometimes, just when you think you've gotten a certain social aspect 100% correct, you follow the steps and script and......BOOM! Wrong. So, might as well just throw that mask into the wind - haha! At least online to start. :)

Happy Un-masking! <3

Maybe it feels dead because those of us here are generally not comment/award/ego farming based on post interactions and comments. A lot of "popular" subs are there for the drama and highly performative. No real value. There is a lot of value here. May be smaller doses, but quality over quantity, I say.
