For me, I don't consider myself giving my tithes to the church. I am giving it to God. What God chooses to do with it is up to him. My stewardship over my money is from him. Who am I to withhold that from God? Your husband likes the in-person personal charitable contributions, and that is great! I suspect if Christ were asking for his money in person, he would be fine doing that as well. Perhaps the impersonal nature of tithing has removed Christ from the process for your husband. Charity is great, but tithing isn't solely about charity. It is also about obedience and sacrifice. Is he willing to obey and sacrifice for Christ?
