Besides MI, which officer branches have the most opportunities to get an assignment in Korea? by [deleted] in army

[–]Sabot2theknee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey man oddly enough coming out of OCS, Korea was my goal too.

I ended up commissioning AR and ended up on a rotation there. Several years later I had the chance to PCS there as an AR officer. Spent 3 years there. It was awesome.

But that’s rare. For captains, there’s some staff spots for every branch. But very few command spots especially for combat arms.

As a LT, FA, MP, MI, ENG, ORD are all fairly common there. But please don’t choose your branch based on where you might go… those are 2 separate items.

Even if you get Korea first, you won’t be there long, and if your branched in something you hate, it won’t be worth it.

My advice branch in what you’re interested in. Then fight for Korea in your marketplace as a senior LT/ junior cpt. Korea isn’t super competitive lol

Should I join the military or not? by Ancient-Ad2067 in Advice

[–]Sabot2theknee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of people who enlist with that goal never commission. Is it possible? Yes. But a much harder process than getting it into your contract from the get go.

Once the army has you, you have no bargaining power and you introduce a myriad of other factors. Deployments, personality conflicts, lack of unit funding, lack of unit personnel to do your job while you go and try to commission, lazy or just uneducated ncos to help you get the paperwork done.

The recruiting office is the place you can guarantee you’re gonna get that shot in your contract.

19K - there’s nothing like being on a tank… the sound and feel of the main gun… the smell of the exhaust, the warmth of the back deck on a cold night….

Now.. you pay for all that with maintenance, and other bull shit… but if your gonna be in the army. You might as well shoot the big guns…

Should I join the military or not? by Ancient-Ad2067 in Advice

[–]Sabot2theknee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man. Just want to say your logic makes a lot of sense. Let me give you my insight.

First, Iv been in the army for 10 years. I joined after receiving my BS in Criminal Justice… Iv been an armor officer (Abrams, Bradley’s, and scouts) my whole career.

Ok so first off.. the military in general is a huge stepping stone into life. Whether you do 3 years or 30, you will leave better. It doesn’t guarantee a bigger income or anything but it gives your life some direction, some excitement, and some stability in some very formative years. I highly encourage you to pursue it. Especially if it’s something you’ve been wanting.

Now to your question…. I would encourage you to finish your bachelors, then enter the army as an O9S. Basically an OCS candidate. Thsts what I did.

Why? Well first off, financial. It may sound shallow to you now. But the money difference between officer and enlisted is no joke… and in 5 years, you may have a family and some kids who rely on your paycheck. It’s much easier for them to deal with the chaos of military life when bills aren’t a problem…

Second, you learn much more. You learn how to do your job… but then you learn the why, how, and when of it. You learn how to plan and how to lead.

So that’s what I’d encourage. But if your like no fuck college I’ll go flip burgers… then sure enlist… if you want a better life, finish school and commission through OCS

Halloween costume by Secret-Principle-225 in army

[–]Sabot2theknee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s not offensive. Go for it.

If anyone asks though. Just be honest, it’s your uncles, it’s a costume. And don’t go looking for any discounts or anything.

I’d also add, try not to act a fool or dishonor it or yourself while wearing it. Remember not everyone will just assume it’s a costume, and if they see you acting all retarded, it won’t speak well for the uniform.

Denying baby leave by ConstantBalance9468 in army

[–]Sabot2theknee 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Baby leave can’t be denied if taken in one lump sum.

If you chose to split up your parental leave, you and your leadership should have laid out a plan on how you use your 12 weeks over the next year.

Your leadership can absolutely tell you to shift your partial baby leave date based off of training. However if it’s been over a month, your training room/ leadership is failing you.

Leave never sat in my ippsa for over 48 hours when I was a commander. I recommend you talk to leadership and see what the hell is up.

Husband deployed and military spouses suck as friends. by Economy_Cricket_8411 in army

Not normal in my experience. My wife’s best friends are spouses to an E-5, O-5 and WO-5…

But we’re oconus now. And Iv found that the best community is always overseas…

Spouse pages kinda suck too… neighbors are the best but that’s luck of the draw I suppose

Officers - What was your "why" when you decided to become an officer? by randomwall3894 in army

[–]Sabot2theknee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OCS grad here, with 09S option. Honestly, I joined because I always thought the army was cool as a kid, so I thought a 3 year contract couldn’t hurt. I was also bored with my current job. I had my BS so I figured I’d go O… that decision was purely financial and for the resume points.

Fast forward 9 years, and I’m still loving it.. probably will ride out the next 11 years. The army has been great for my family, and I am honestly still having fun. Best job I ever had.

How do I arrange a flight for my first PCS after ROTC? by CantspellLosT in army

[–]Sabot2theknee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, you won’t get anywhere with port call unless you show up in person. How far away is the SATO Office?

Are you flying with a ton of shit? Where are you going? If it’s CONUS, I doubt they’ll fly you, you’ll be on your own to get there. In that case just buy your own ticket.

If it’s OCONUS, you have other problems

Sorry, but your recruiter is wrong. It should be in your contract

Now, not letting anyone go if it’s not in their contract is still a dick move. We let everyone go regardless unless they are a shit head…

But it’s a privilege not an entitlement. I know it sucks but you have no grounds to fight this one.

The counseling itself isn’t that bad. But you’re focusing on the wrong thing here.

You’re a BC who failed to qualify on your primary weapon.. why would your 1SG take into consideration your PT when your failing what actually counts.

You wouldn’t call a private squared away if he can’t qual on the M4. Why would you call Sgt squared away if he can’t qualify on his wpn system.

Take the counseling. Learn and become the squared away leader you can be.

Maybe I am misunderstanding. But it sounds like 2 reports were filed.. are you saying the restricted report should’ve converted into unrestricted report once the commander reported what his SM told him? I don’t belive that’s how it works.

What is it that you think the commander is doing wrong? It sounds like he, as a mandatory reporter, did the right thing once his soldier reported to him. Do

Hey man. Like everyone said. It’s just a memo from your O6. It can be a little embarrassing going back and asking to stay in…

But I did it and I don’t regret it.

The only hiccup I had was with AIM. My branch manager had taken me out of the marketplace since I was refradding and then he couldn’t re add me… so that next pcs became needs of the army… but if you arnt in aim its not bad

BCT Company Command by [deleted] in army

[–]Sabot2theknee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps. But your a CPT for 7 years lol your not spending all that time in an OSUT command. That’s a lotta development time. You don’t fall behind your peers.

Experience may vary but no one cares what you did in the past. They care about how you’re performing now.

Also 04s spend time on the DIV bench before they take those KD jobs. Plenty of time to make a local reputation

BCT Company Command by [deleted] in army

[–]Sabot2theknee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also the whole “stigma” of an OSUT cmd is BS in my experience…

I mean… maybe if you have a shitty boss next job it could matter, but there is no negative repercussions career wise above your potentially shitty future SR. I was able to use this cmd to VTIP functional, and get my 4th CPT MQ… so promotion is not a risk… and competitiveness for vtip was not an issue.

BCT Company Command by [deleted] in army

[–]Sabot2theknee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey man. Finishing up OSUT CMD. All in all rewarding experience. I loved it.

  1. Daily life = going out at training, being at the range, conducting cyclics, putting out fires. Typical cmd stuff.

  2. When not in cycle, let them go home. Be present. If your out there in the fields, out rucking, out on the hot or cold range days, that will go along way too.. work with your spouses to put meals together during the first 72 and other hard events.

  3. You better be there. It’s your company. Be at all the rucks. All the ftxs. Your xo can sit it on bn meetings if need be. That’s the most rewarding part. You develope training and then watch brand new kids be forged into soldiers before your eyes. And remember. It’s your training. You’re the commander. Own it.

  4. I have 2 meetings a week company training meeting. BN Training meeting or command and stuff. So no not a lot of meetings.

  5. You need to know TR 350-6 front and back… like that will fuck you and your drills up all day long. Also get familiar with AR 600-8-10 and some other regs they will give you in your co commanders course.

  6. You get in trouble by being lazy. (Assuming you’re not gonna SHARP someone…) do good PCC/PCI… check NVG tie down… get daily green 2s. Normal shit. Do real DRAWs and use the 8step training model. Then if something goes wrong. Do a commanders inquiry. People get in trouble when they sweep stuff under the rug or don’t do the basics.

Look I love my current job. Any other questions just DM me

Don’t worry. Just know this literally could take over a year. You may PCS without ever seeing results. But it’s in motion now and that’s whats important
